Are Flywheels Right for Rail?

  • Vehicle braking in non-electrified rail systems wastes energy. Advanced flywheel technology presents a way to capture and reuse this braking energy to improve vehicle efficiency and so reduce the operating costs and environmental impact of diesel trains. This paper highlights the suitability of flywheels for rail vehicle applications, and proposes a novel mechanical transmission system to apply regenerative braking using a flywheel energy storage device. A computational model is used to illustrate the operation and potential benefits of the energy storage system.

하지 진단 및 재활을 위한 각속도계 기반 측정시스템 (Gait Estimation System for Leg Diagnosis and Rehabilitation using Gyroscopes)

  • Gait analysis is essential for leg diagnosis and rehabilitation for the patients, the handicapped and the elderly. The use of 3D motion capture device for gait analysis is very common for gait analysis. However, this device has several shortcomings including limited workspace, visibility and high price. Instead, we developed gait estimation system using gyroscopes. This system provides gait information including the number of gaits, stride and walking distance. With four gyroscope (one for each leg's thigh and calf) outputs, the proposed gait modeling estimates the movements of the hip, the knees and the feet. Complete pedestrian localization is implemented with gait information and the heading angle estimated from the rate gyro and the magnetic compass measurements. The developed system is very useful for diagnosis and the rehabilitation of the pedestrian at the hospital. It is also useful for indoor localization of the pedestrians.

  • This paper deals with a novel structure for single-cell characterization which makes use of bimorph micro thermal actuators combined with electrical sensor device and integrated microfluidic channel. The goal for this device is to capture and characterize individual biocell. Quantitative and qualitative characteristics of bimorph thermal actuator were analyzed with finite element analysis methods. Furthermore, optimization for the dimension of cantilevers and integrated parallel probe systems with microfluidic channels is able to be realized through the virtual simulation for actuation and the practical fabrication of prototype of probes. The experimental value of probe deflection was in accordance with the simulated one.

  • The purpose of the current study was to evaluate a spectrum formulation set employed to modify the neutron spectrum of D-D fusion neutrons in a IS plasma focus device using GEANT4, MCNPX2.6, and FLUKA codes. The set consists of a moderator, reflector, collimator and filters of fast neutron and gamma radiation, which placed on the path of 2.45 MeV neutron energy. The treated neutrons eliminate cancerous tissue with minimal damage to other healthy tissue in a method called neutron therapy. The system optimized for a total neutron yield of 109 (n/s). The numerical results indicate that the GEANT4 code for the cubic geometry in the Beam Shaping Assembly 3 (BSA3) is the best choice for the energy of epithermal neutrons.

Using nano-micro-control technology to improve breathing pressure in vocal music technique teaching innovation

  • In the present study, we aim to use nanotechnology sensors/actuators to capture pressure and frequency of voice singers and to send signals for improving breathing pressure. In this regard, a circular composite structure having 3 different layers are used. The core layer is nano-composite material reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets. The face sheets are piezo electric materials connected to electrical circuit capable of measuring and applying voltage to the piezoelectric layers. This sensors have extremely smaller size than conventional sensors attached to the neck of singer and, hence, minimizes the influences on the output voice of the singer. A brief theoretical framework are presented for nonlocal strain gradient theory and geometry of the sensor is described in detail. The controlling procedure along with experimental results on 20 amateur and professional singer participants are also presented. The results of the study indicate that the participants could gain benefit from the device for improving their ability in phonation and keeping their frequency at a constant level although they have difficulty in the beginning of the experiment getting used to the device.

관성항법시스템을 이용한 3D 포인팅 디바이스의 설계 및 구현 (Design and Implementation of a 3D Pointing Device using Inertial Navigation System)

  • 본 논문에서는 2차원 포인팅 장치의 한계를 극복하기 위하여 3차원 공간에서 주위환경에 관계없이 위치를 인지하고 좌표를 얻어낼 수 있는 관성항법시스템을 이용한 3차원 포인팅 기기의 설계 및 구현방식을 제안한다. 관성항법시스템은 각속도계(gyroscope)와 가속도계(accelerometer)의 데이터를 바탕으로 좌표를 계산하는 기법으로, 가속도계에서 발생하는 오차는 칼만 필터를 이용하여 데이터를 보정한다. 3차원 포인팅 장치의 프로토 타입 개발을 위해 무선 3차원 공간인식 마우스를 설계 및 구현하였으며, 디스플레이 장치에 표시를 위하여 RFIC를 이용하여 측정한 좌표 데이터를 수신 모듈로 전송하고 수신 모듈은 USB 드라이버를 통하여 호스트로 전달하였다. 본 논문은 관성항법시스템과 칼만 필터의 이론적인 지식을 바탕으로 3차원 포인팅 장치를 설계하고 프로토 타입을 구현하고 성능 평가를 통하여 3차원 공간에서 사용자의 움직임을 추출할 수 있는 입력 기기로서의 유용성을 검증하였으며 향후 유비쿼터스 컴퓨팅의 다양한 응용 장치로서의 가능성을 제시하였다.

  • CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) 영상센서를 이용한 영상관측 시스템 을 제작하여 천문관측 활용 가능성에 대한 조사를 수행하였다. CCD(charge coupled device) 영상센서는 지난 30여년간 개발을 거듭해온 결과, 대부분의 영상획득장비나 천문관측용으로 사용되는 극미광 영상장비로 사용되왔다. 그러나 CMOS영상센서 가 실용화되면서 CCD를 이용한 극미광 영상관측 시스템과 일반 상용 영상시스템은 CMOS 영상센서로 교체되고 있다. CMOS 영상센서의 경우 CCD에 비해 시스템 잡음과 측광 성능은 뒤지지만, 태양과 별의 영상을 얻어본 결과 일반적인 영상관측장비로서는 사용이 가능하다.

Paddling Posture Correction System Using IMU Sensors

  • In recent times, motion capture technology using inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors has been actively used in sports. In this study, we developed a canoe paddle, installed with an IMU and a water level sensor, as a system tool for training and calibration purposes in water sports. The hardware was fabricated to control an attitude heading reference system (AHRS) module, a water level sensor, a communication module, and a wireless charging circuit. We also developed an application program for the mobile device that processes paddling motion data from the paddling operation and also visualizes it. An AHRS module with acceleration, gyro, and geomagnetic sensors each having three axes, and a resistive water level sensor that senses the immersion depth in the water of the paddle represented the paddle motion. The motion data transmitted from the paddle device is internally decoded and classified by the application program in the mobile device to perform visualization and to operate functions of the mobile training/correction system. To conclude, we tried to provide mobile knowledge service through paddle sport data using this technique. The developed system works reasonably well to be used as a basic training and posture correction tool for paddle sports; the transmission delay time of the sensor system is measured within 90 ms, and it shows that there is no complication in its practical usage.

영상 이동변위 기반의 휴대 장치의 새로운 사용자 인터페이스 (A Study on DRM Model using Electronic Cash System)

  • 본 논문에서는 이동변위를 기반으로 하는 휴대기기의 새로운 입력 방법을 제안한다. 이를 위하여 휴대기기에 장착되어 있는 카메라를 이용하여 영상을 연속적으로 획득하고, 획득된 영상간의 변위를 실시간으로 계산함으로써 휴대기기의 이동 변위를 추정하였다. 제안하는 알고리즘은 획득된 영상간의 변위를 실시간으로 계산하기 위하여 계산량이 적은 SUSAN 코너 검출기를 사용하여 두 영상에서 특징점 들을 추출하였다. 다음으로 추출된 특징점 사이의 매칭작업을 수행하기 위하여 투 패스 알고리즘을 적용한 보로노이 평면을 생성하고, 두 영상의 거리 값인 SAD (Sum of absolute difference)를 계산함으로써 두 영상간의 변위를 계산하였다. 실험결과에서는 총 1500장의 영상을 이용하여 변위 추정알고리즘의 성능을 평가하였다. 그 결과 최대 90% 이상 매칭 성공률을 보였으며, 연산 속도는 5 ms 이내였다.

  • This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of rescue apparatus, that can capture crabs using external stimuli such as food and electricity, without relying on divers. In this study, a microcomputer-based controller and an IC-device-based controller were developed, and spot inspection was conducted using 20 modules and 30 sea urchin removal modules. Accordingly, 58, 18, 17, and 74 sea urchins were introduced in the first, second, third and fourth experiments, respectively. The result of evaluating the lure of each removal mechanism, based on the catch per unit effort, with an electrical stimulus was 1.1 (32/10), with a feeding stimulus was 3.4 (100/29), and with electrical and feeding stimuli was 3.5 (35/10).
