  • The genesis of Modern Architecture in Korea by Korean Architects can be explained by the Korean socio-economical condition. During the late 19c and early 20c many buildings had been constructed that contained modern function, But modern builings designed by Korean Architects appeared through the 1930s. The 'Hwoisaryung' which was a law to restrict establishing company in Korea since 1910 was extincted at 1920. Korean modern capitalists formed after 1920 could be clients of a modern buildings. The period of the formation of Korean modern architects met that of Korean modern capitalists. Korean modern capitalists commissioned Korean architects and Korean architects were able to practice only in the relation of its patron. Korean capital formed 6 per cent of total capital in Korea. Although Korean capitalists would be a patron of Korean architects, their requests of building were restricted to the commercial, the residential and the private educational buildings.

  • Indigenous technological development and import of foreign technologies are two major sources of industrial innovation in Korea. This paper mainly deals with the analysis of the relationship between the two sources, employing the Tobit method. The estimation of the effects of those two sources on the firms' sales growth is also performed, including other exogenous variables such as fixed capital formation and the amount of exports, etc. in the model. Technological import is shown to be complimentary rather than substitute for or competitive with R&D in the Korean industries during 1990. This is understandable because R&D may be conducted to absorb and adapt the advanced imported technologies as well as to further more innovative technological development. Fixed capital formation is positively correlated with technology import, but negatively correlated with R&D. Technology importation seems to have contributed much more than R&D to the sales increase in the Korean industries.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyses current status and issues of cluster formation and extract policy implications. To this end, the questionnaire which surveyed the level of cluster formation were executed targeting the actors of regional innovation projects(RIPs). The results show that the situations and development stage of the cluster formation between capital region and non-capital region, large cities and small and medium sized cites are different. The level of clustering is also satisfactory, which is a requirement for cluster formation at its early stage. However, the capacity for phase II of cluster growth is not sufficient yet in terns of relationships between ventures and large corporations, institutions supporting management, finance and marketing, researchers from each individual sector of strategic industries and spin-off fines. Therefore, RIPs should be promoted with different policy tools for various regions that are devised according to the varying development stage of each region. The location of RIPs should be determined considering efficiency rather than equity, clustering rather than decentralization, and specialization rather than multiple development. In the long term, developed regions should pursue balanced regional development, with underdeveloped regions targeting specialization.

  • This study aims to classify the architectural formation of the Stylobate of and Staircase types of Post-Lintel Construction in Backje style and Silla style and also to figure out their specific elements by periods and transformation characteristics. The scope of this study was restricted to architectural remains between the Three Kingdom period and the Goryeo period. To progress the investigation, the study classified remains in a similar type by period and type, and then and analyzed its character based on formation method and specific factors of subsidiary materials. As a result, its type can be classified as Backje type(I), Silla type(II) and Mixed type(III). Regionally, it is found that Woongjin, Sabi and surroundings in the capital of Backje, Gyeongju and main towns in the capital of Silla, and Gaeseong and main towns in the capital of Goryeo. In particular, type III has the characteristics of type I and II simultaneously, which has one or two layers Jangdaeseok stone between the foundation stone of stylobate and plate stone, and tends to be decorative when Taengjuseok stone is installed. For types of staircase, it could be classified as 6~7C Backje type(I), 7~9C Silla type(II) and 9C Mixed type(III) according to the formation method of Somaetdol (banister of stone stair). And from the 9th century on, decorated Somaetdol stone type(IV) of 1/4 circle shape began to appear. The common feature of stylobate of post-lintel and staircase is that it became simplified, abbreviated and decorative. It seems to be intended to secure simplicity of construction or structural stability.

  • The issues on education as a human capital formation in recent years have been focused for all of the countries with emerging of the knowledge-based economy. The present study compared and analyzed the relationships between the educational investment and national economic growth of ten non-English-speaking OECD countries during 1970-2008, using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) and Seemingly Unrelated Regression Estimation (SURE) as the main analytical methods. Findings indicate that educational investment, R&D investment, and fertility rate were statistically significant in the estimation of the variables related to the human capital formation, and these elements had also positive influence on the national economic growth. The most salient factor was the fertility rate, and the R&D investment and educational investment appeared as the next factors in the national economic growth. In particular, the dimensions in the coefficient of the fertility rate showed 1.8 times of the R&D and 3.5 times of the educational investment, respectively. These results imply that educational investment, R&D investment, and the policies which promote fertility rate should be taken into account for the continuous economic growth of each country.
