  • Polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films consist of micro-droplets of liquid crystals dispersed in a polymer matrix. To make wide area PDLC filled devices, it is necessary to develop reliable method of vacuum injection of PDLC solution instead of the capillary injection. However, well-known 2-ethylhexylacrylate (EHA), main element of a prepolymer, exhibits the volatility problems, when the PDLC solution is placed under the low pressure. In this study, we developed the vacuum injection process to fill a wide area cell. Experimental results indicate that the $V_{90}$(turn-on voltage) of the PDLC cell made by a vacuum injection method are lower than that of the PDLC cell made by a capillary injection method.

  • The objective of the present study was to elucidate the effect of bisphosphonates, anti-osteoporosis agents, on glucose uptake in retinal capillary endothelial cells under normal and high glucose conditions. The change of glucose uptake by pre-treatment of bisphosphonates at the inner blood-retinal barrier (iBRB) was determined by measuring cellular uptake of $[^3H]3$-O-methyl glucose (3-OMG) using a conditionally immortalized rat retinal capillary endothelial cell line (TR-iBRB cells) under normal and high glucose conditions. $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake was inhibited by simultaneous treatment of unlabeled D-glucose and 3-OMG as well as glucose transport inhibitor, cytochalasin B. On the other hand, simultaneous treatment of alendronate or pamidronate had no significant inhibitory effect on $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake by TR-iBRB cells. Under high glucose condition of TR-iBRB cells, $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake was increased at 48 h. However, $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake was decreased significantly by pre-treatment of alendronate or pamidronate compared with the values for normal and high glucose conditions. Moreover, geranylgeraniol (GGOH), a mevalonate pathway intermediate, increased the uptake of $[^3H]3$-OMG reduced by bisphosphonates pre-treatment. But, pre-treatment of histamine did not show significant inhibition of $[^3H]3$-OMG uptake. The glucose uptake may be down regulated by inhibiting the mevalonate pathway with pre-treatment of bisphosphonates in TR-iBRB cells at high glucose condition.

  • Choline is an important membrane phospholipid constituent and a neurotransmitter precursor that is minimally synthesized in brain. The long-term maintenance of brain choline concentration is dependent on choline transport from plasma, which occurs via saturable transport system at the blood-brain barrier. In the present study, we examined to elucidate the characteristics of transport of cationic amines, especially choline which is one of cationic amines, to BBS using conditionally immortalized rat brain capillary endothelial cell line (TR-BBB) in vitro. • Here we report an integrated microdevice consisting of an efficient passive mixer, a magnetic separation chamber, and a capillary electrophoretic microchannel in which DNA barcode assay, target pathogen separation, and barcode DNA capillary electrophoretic analysis were performed sequentially within 30 min for multiplex pathogen detection at the single-cell level. The intestine-shaped serpentine 3D micromixer provides a high mixing rate to generate magnetic particle-pathogenic bacteria-DNA barcode labelled AuNP complexes quantitatively. After magnetic separation and purification of those complexes, the barcode DNA strands were released and analyzed by the microfluidic capillary electrophoresis within 5 min. The size of the barcode DNA strand was controlled depending on the target bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli O157:H7, and Salmonella typhimurium), and the different elution time of the barcode DNA peak in the electropherogram allows us to recognize the target pathogen with ease in the monoplex as well as in the multiplex analysis. In addition, the quantity of the DNA barcode strand (~104) per AuNP is enough to be observed in the laser-induced confocal fluorescence detector, thereby making single-cell analysis possible. This novel integrated microdevice enables us to perform rapid, sensitive, and multiplex pathogen detection with sample-in-answer-out capability to be applied for biosafety testing, environmental screening, and clinical trials.

  • The present study investigated the effect of transverse vibration on the hemorheological characteristics of blood using a newly designed pressure-scanning capillary viscometer. As vibration was applied, aggregated blood cells (rouleaux) were disaggregated. The range of vibration frequency and amplitude are $0{\sim}100\;Hz$ and $0{\sim}0.8\;mm$, respectively for a capillary diameter 0.84 mm. As vibration increased, blood viscosity initially increased and tended to decrease. In order to delineate the unexpected results, the present study proposed two counteracting mechanisms of vibration related with red blood cell (RBC) aggregation affecting hemo-rheological properties. One is the reduction of RBC aggregation due to vibration causing an increase of blood viscosity. The other is forced cell migration due to the transverse vibration, which in turn forms a cell-free layer near the tube wall and causes a decrease of flow resistance.

  • Capillary fringe divides the groundwater and the vadose zone controlling the diffusive mass transfer of contaminants and gases. The thickness of capillary fringe is of great importance for the rate of contaminant mass transfer across the capillary fringe. Application of surface active chemicals including surfactants and alcohol-based products into the subsurface environment changes the surface tension of the aqueous phase, which in turn, affects the thickness of the capillary fringe. In this study, a bench-scale model was used to assess the quantitative relationship between the surface tension and the thickness of the capillary fringe. An anionic surfactant (Sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, SDBS) and an aqueous solution of ethanol were used to control the surface tension of the groundwater. It was found that the thickness of the capillary fringe is directly proportional to the surface tension. The air entry pressures measured by the Tempe Pressure Cell at different surface tensions using SDBS (200 mg/L) and ethanol (20%, v/v) solutions were in good agreement with the thicknesses of the capillary fringe measured by the model. A simple method to correct the conventional Brooks-Corey model for estimating the air entry pressure was also presented.

  • Water transport through the microporous membrane was modeled considering capillary condensation as well as capillary flow in porous media as a function of pore diameter and relative humidity at the surface. The present model was adopted by the numerical simulation of non-isothermal, non-homogenous flow in a shell and tube typed gas to gas membrane humidifier for PEMFC (proton exchange membrane fuel cell) and the result shows good agreement with experimental data.

  • Direct analysis of microbes such as either gram-positive or gram-negative bacteria without cell lysis was investigated using capillary electrophoresis. Bacteria cells were directly introduced into the microbore fusedsilica capillary, then separated under high electric field in less than 15 min. It was found that a proper dispersion of bacteria cells was important for reproducible results. Migration behavior of bacteria at different storage condition was investigated and many unexpected peaks were observed from bacteria stored at room temperature due to the distortion of cells. This phenomenon was attributed to the change of size and shape of the same bacterium and confirmed by the scanning electron microscopic images.

  • Water balance has a significant impact on the overall fuel cell system performance. Proper water management should provide an adequate membrane hydration and avoidance of water flooding in the catalyst layer and gas diffusion layer. Considering the important of advanced water management in PEM fuel cell, this study proposes a simple one dimensional water transportation model of PEM fuel cell for use in a dynamic condition. The model has been created by assumption that the output is the water liquid saturation difference. The liquid saturation change is the total difference between the additional water and the removal water on the system. The water addition is obtained from fuel cell reaction and the electro osmotic drag. The water removal is obtained from capillary transport and evaporation process. The result shows that the capillary water transport of low temperature fuel cell is high because the evaporation rate is low.
