In the present study, the performance characteristics of the heat pump chiller under heating conditions were experimentally investigated. Capacity, input power and COP under overload, frost and defrost conditions were obtained. The experimental data for the heat pump chiller were measured using the air-enthalpy calorimeter and the constant temperature water bath. At overload condition, the heating capacity and COP increase about 25.7% and 19.1%, respectively. The variations of the evaporator, the compressor outlet and the condenser temperature were obtained under frost and defrost conditions. The frost and defrost period of the heat exchanger decreases about 36.0~56.1%.
Cryogenic cooling system for HTS electric power devices requires a reliable and efficient high-capacity cryocooler. A Striling cryocooler with a linear compressor can be a good candidate. It has advantages of low vibration and long maintenance cycle compared with a kinematic-driven Stirling cryocooler. In this study, we developed dual-opposed linear compressor of 12 kW electric input power with two 6 kW linear motors. Electrical performance of fabricated linear compressor is verified by experimental measurement of thrust constant. The developed Stirling cryocooler has gamma-type configuration. Piston and displacer are supported with flexure spring. A slit-type heat exchanger is adopted for cold and warm-end, and the generated heat is rejected by cooling water. In cooling performance test, waveforms of voltage, current, displacement and pressure are obtained and their amplitude and phase difference are analysed. Moreover, temperatures of cooling water, housing and linear motor are recorded and electric power parameters of driving circuit are also obtained. The developed Stirling cryocooler reaches to 47.8 K within 23.4 min. with no-load. From heat load tests, it shows cooling capacity of 440 W at 78.1 K with 6.45 kW of electric input power and 19.4 of % Carnot COP.
This experimental study presents the results of the cooling performance test of a $CO_2$ heat pump system for fuel cell vehicles. The experimental facility provides the cool ing and heating environment for cabin and heat releasing component. The test loop is designed to target the cooling capacity of 5kW and its coefficient of performance (COP) of 2.2. The cooling performance of the heat pump system is strongly dependent on the refrigerant charge and the degree of superheat. We carried out basic experiments to obtain optimum refrigerant charge and the degree of superheat level at the internal heat exchanger outlet. The heat pump system for fuel cell vehicles is different from that of engine-driven vehicles, where the former has an electricity-driven compressor and the latter has the belt-driven (engine-driven) compressor. In the fuel cell vehicle, the compressor speed is an independent operating parameter and it is controlled to meet the cooling/heating loads. Experiments were carried out at cooling mode with respect to the compressor speed and the incoming outdoor air speed. The results obtained in this study can provide the fundamental cool ing performance data using the $CO_2$ heat pump system for fuel cell vehicles.
This paper presents modelling and analyzing method of centrifugal chiller which has a rated capacity of 200 RT(703 kW) through on-site performance test. Field data of chiller installed in the clean-room building of KIST have been collected, Simple models were developed for predicting the heat exchangers and system performances by regression of chiller operation data during 5 days in August. The models proposed here account for the effect of variations of cooling capacity, temperatures and flow rates of secondary fluids. The models are consistent with real performance data from June to September within ${\pm}5%$ error. The COP of centrifugal chiller are estimated under the standard rating conditions and reduced mass flow rate of chilled and cooling water.
An absorption heat pump cycle has been modeled and simulated to analyze the system performance of water-cooled, series-flow, double-effect absorption heat pump, which can be applied to a direct gas fired cooling system with the medium range of cooling capacity (15RT level). Effect of absorption cooling system parameters, such as concentration difference, inlet temperature of cooling water, 1st generator temperature, leaving temperature differences of condenser and evaporator and efficiency of solution heat exchanger, has been investigated in the view of system cooling performance.
A numerical model for predicting the performance of gas distrubutor type double inlet pulse tube refrigerators has been developed. The model was based on adiabatic analysis and the losses of heat exchangers and regenerator were considered. Thermodynamic behavior of working fluid within a double inlet pulse tube refrigerator was investigated and the effects of design parameters, such as valve and orifice openings, cold heat exchanger temperature, frequency and pulse tube length, on the cooling capacity and COP were shown.
This paper presents numerical study on dynamic characteristics of evaporator to control evaporator superheat and compressor capacity with optimum condition in refrigeration system. It is very important to reduce energy consumption and to keep room temperature within a very restricted range with minimum oscillation in some special applications of the refrigeration system. Heat exchange is mainly happened in the evaporator. So, making mathematical model of evaporator and analyzing evaporator characteristics are necessary in order to control the superheat and the capacity of the system. A mathematical model based on the one dimensional partial differential equations representing mass and energy conservation and a tube-wall energy is described. A set of ordinary differential equation is formulated by integrating separately over the two regions(two-phase and vapor) generally presented in a heat exchanger.
A commercial-scale RDF boiler that its burning capacity is 400 kg-RDF/hr and steam production capacity is 2 ton/hr. It has a chain type stoker and waste heat recovery system. Heat exchanger is vertical water-pipe so that soot blowing and removal is convenient during operation. Dry scrubber, bag filter and activated carbon tower have been installed for the reduction of air pollutant gases and dust. Analysing data of pollutants from stack such as $SO_x$. $NO_x$ and dioxin shows so good results that the boiler system could comply the regulated emission limits.
The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performances of cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air contaminants foul heat exchangers. An empirical modeling equation has been derived from the experimental results using accelerated tests and it showed good predictions of the fouling characteristics of the slitted finned tube heat exchangers. However the modeling equation predicts only the fouling characteristics of new heat exchangers and it can not predicts fouling characteristics obtained from actual field data which contains the effect of hydrophilicity deterioration. Therefore an modified modeling equation is proposed and it shows good predictions of the actual fouling characteristics of finned-tube heat exchangers.
