  • The heavy duty diesel engine must have a large output for maintaining excellent mobility. In this study, a three dimensional finite element model of a heavy-duty diesel engine was developed to conduct the stress analysis. The FE model of the heavy duty diesel engine main parts consisting with four half cylinder was selected. The heavy duty diesel engine parts includes with cylinder block, cylinder head, gasket, liner, bearing cap, bearing and bolts. The loading conditions of engine were pre-fit load, assembly load, and gas load. As the results of structural analysis, because the stress values of cylinder block and bearing cap did not exceed the basic design can be satisfied. But on the part which contacts with cylinder block and bearing cap the stress value exceeds the allowable strength of material. In order to decrease the stress at that part, it was optimized with parametric study.

  • In this paper, we studied generating characteristic of cymbal type piezoelectric transducer according to change of cymbal cap. The transducer is composed of circular piezoelectric ceramic and two elastic bodies which are shaped as cymbal. Two elastic bodies are attached to upper and bottom of the ceramic. Principle of the transducer is to generate expanded displacement because vertical stress is transformed into horizontal stress by slope angle of elastic bodies. The transducer also has advantage of high durability by the angle of elastic bodies. In this study, each parameter was chosen, and then generating characteristics were analyzed by FEM program. The parameters were slope angle of cymbal cap (theta), cap height (h) and cap inner diameter(d). The model that had generating characteristic Of high voltage was chosen by results of the analysis. Besides, maximum vertical displacements according to change of vertical stress were analyzed by structural analysis in order to find out relation between the maximum vertical stress which can prevent from ceramic damage and conditions of each cap.

  • Stress distribution and interfacial debonding process at the interface between a rubber mold and a powder compact were analyzed during unloading under cold isostatic pressing. The Cap model proposed by Lee and Kim was used for densification behavior of powder based on the parameters involved in the yield function of general Cap model and volumetric strain evolution. Cohesive elements incorporating a bilinear cohesive zone model were also used to simulate interfacial debonding process. The Cap model and the cohesive zone model were implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). Densification behavior of powder was investigated under various interface conditions between a rubber mold and a powder compact during loading. The residual tensile stress at the interface was investigated for rubber molds with various elastic moduli under perfect bonding condition. The variations of the elastic energy density of a rubber mold and the maximum principal stress of a powder compact were calculated for several interfacial strengths at the interface during unloading.

  • Model tests were performed to investigate the failure modes in embankments on soft ground supported by piles with cap beams. In the model tests, Jumunjin standard sand was placed on simulated cap beams and soft ground. The cap beams are placed perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the embankment. The colored sand and the Jmniin standard sand were placed one after the other above cap beams and soft ground to make lateral stripes with 3mm thickness in the embarkment. The colored sand was prepared by coating the Jumunjin sand with black lead powder. The photographs illustrate the two characteristic modes of failure in embarkments. One is the soil arching failure and the other is the punching shear failure. The failure mode depends on the height of embankment and the space between cap beams. That is, if the embankment is high enough compared with the space between cap beams, it will fail in arching failure. On the other hand if the embarkment is relatively low or the space between piles is too wide, it will fail in punching shear failure. The soil arching develops in embarkment as a semicylindrical arch with a thickness equal to the width of the cap beam. And the soil wedge developed above the cap beams remains intact during both arching and punching failures. The boundary of punching shear failure of the displaced soil mass can be defined on the basis of observation of the photographs.

  • The volatility in the stock market responds differently to information types. That is, the asymmetric volatility exists in the stock market which responds more to unexpected negative returns due to bad news than unexpected positive returns due to good news. This paper examines the asymmetric response of the volatility of KOSPI, large-cap, middle-cap, and small-cap indices returns which is announced in Korea exchange (KRX) by using the MA-GJR model and the MA-EGARCH model. According to empirical analyses, it shows that the asymmetric response of volatility exists in all indices regardless of volatility estimation models and the degree of the asymmetric volatility response of the small-cap index returns is greater than that of the large-cap index returns. Moreover, this results also observed robustly during the period of both before and after the global financial crisis.

  • Generally, the Wheeler cap method is used to measure the efficiency of small antennas. This method often gives an unreliable efficiency when the antenna has a complicated operating principle. However, if the high-order circuit model which more closely represents the input impedance of the antenna is used in Wheeler cap method, then more accurate efficiency can be achieved. In this paper, we propose a novel method that can build the high-order circuit model using transformer circuits with the genetic algorithm(GA). To efficiently reduce the searching space in the GA and improve the convergence of the GA process, we suggest a novel scheme that finds appropriate initial values. Finally we verify the proposed method by measuring the efficiency of some passive RFID tag antennas.

  • In scroll compressors, there are two major noise sources. Sturctural path: excitation of the compressor housing by unbalance forces and forces generated by compression cycle. Gas cavity path: excitation of top cap by discharge gas pulsation. In this study, in order to analyze the radiated noise generated by the discharge gas pulsation, FEM/BEM model of the top cap is established. Measured pressure of discharge pulsation is introduced in the FEM model as the excitation and vibration response is calculated. Radiated sound pressure is then obtained by BEM method based on this vibration response. Results are compared with the measured data. It is shown that the trend of the noise radiation can be predicted in this approadch.

  • Densification behavior of SiC powder was investigated under cold compaction. A special form of the Cap model was proposed from experimental data of SiC powder under triaxial compression. To compare with experimental data of SiC powder under cold compaction, the proposed constitutive model was implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). Finite element calculations from the Cam-Clay model and the modified Drucker-Prager model were also compared with experimental data of SiC powder. The agreements between experimental data and finite element results obtained from the proposed constitutive model are reasonably good. In die pressing, finite element results obtained from the Cam-Clay model and the modified Drucker-Prager model, however, show lower average density of SiC powder compacts compared to experimental data.

  • In the present work, characteristics of an axial flow fan haying distorted inlet flow produced by hub cap are investigated. The distorted inlet flow is generated by the shape of hub cap installed in front of the axial flow fan. Two different cases of hub cap geometry are analyzed to verify the influence of flow distortion. The flow fields are analyzed numerically by solving steady form of three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes equation and standard k-$\epsilon$ model is used for a turbulence closure. The results obtained from the numerical simulation are compared to those from experimental measurements. It is found that the overall performance of the axial flow fan is increased by reducing the flow distortion at the hub. Detailed characteristics of the flow fields of two different geometric conditions are also discussed.

  • Thermospheric neutral winds and temperatures have been collected from the ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) at Thule Air Base ($76.5^{\circ}N{\;}69.0^{\circ}W$), Greenland since 1985. The thermospheric observations are obtained by determining the Doppler characteristics f the [OI] 6300 ${\AA}$ emissions of atomic oxygen. The FPI operates routinely during the winter season, with a limitation in the observation by the existence of clouds. For this study, data acquired from 1985 to 1991 were analyzed. The neutral wind measurements from these long-term measurements are used to investigate the influence of solar cycle variation on the high-latitude thermospheric dynamics. These data provide experimental results of the geomagnetic polar cap are also compared with the predictions of two semiempirical models : the vector spherical harmonics (VSH) model of Killeen et al. (1987) and the horizontal wind model (HWM) of Hedin et al. (1991). The experimental results show a good positive correlation between solar activity and thermospheric wind speed over the geomagnetic polar cap. The calculated correlation coefficient indicates that an increase of 100 in F10.7 index corresponds to an increase in wind speed of about 100 m/s. The model predictions reveal similar trends of wind speed variation as a function of solar activity, with the VSH and HWM models tending to overestimate and underestimate the wind speed, respectively.
