  • It has been proposed that the Cao-$SiO_2$ binary system can be good basic composition of bioactive glasses and glass-ceramics. In the present study, various kinds of Cao-$SiO_2$ gels were prepared by sol-gel method in order to control the microstructure which are related to their dissolution rate, induction period of apatite formation in body environment. Characterization of the gels were done by wet chemical analysis, SEM observation, FT-IR spectroscopy and XRD. The gelation time decreased with CaO content. However, the volume of all the dried gel decreased to 50% of the wet gels irrespective of increasement of CaO content. All the Cao-$SiO_2$ gels were amorphous and contained a large amount of silanol groups on their surfaces after heat treatment up to $800^{\circ}C$. The interconnected structure of the gel changed to agglomerated spherical powders when Ca content exceed to 20 mol%. Most of the Cao-$SiO_2$ gel showed amorphous when heat-treated up to $900^{\circ}C$. However, quartz and cristobalite was produced when heat-treated at $1000^{\circ}C$ and resultant microstructure of the gel contained microporous structure.

  • The behavior of CaO and SiO2 in the reaction produced which produced in the early hydration of C3S was studied by XRD and thermal analyzer. Polymerization of hydrated siltcates was also studied by TMS method. TMS derivatives were separated by gaschromatography. Cao/SiO2 molar ratios of the produced CSH gel under the air atmosphere were higher than that in the CO2. Dimerization rate of hydrated silicates was very fast in the early hydration stage. Trimer began to appear later than dimer and its increasing rate was very low. The amount of dimer and trimer formed under the CO2 atmosphere was less than that in the air.

  • In this paper, cerium doped lutetium pyrosilicate (LPS) powders with cerium content (0.05 and 0.07 mol%) were prepared by sol-gel process. The formation of lutetium pyrosilicate (LPS) phase was confirmed by XRD analysis for the powders heated at $1,200^{\circ}C$; in these powders, a single phase of $Lu_2Si_2O_7$ (LPS) was observed. Cerium doped lutetium pyrosilicate (LPS) powder was agglomerated and constituted of small spherical particles with diameters of about 300 nm. The photoluminescence spectra of the $Lu_2Si_2O_7:Ce^{3+}$ powders showed the characteristic of excitation and there was an emission spectrum for $Ce^{3+}$ in the host of $Lu_2Si_2O_7$. The emission spectrum shows a broad band in the range of 350-525 nm; the broad wavelength on the right side of the spectra should be ascribed to the same 5d-4f transitions of $Ce^{3+}$, as in the case of cerium doped $Lu_2Si_2O_7$ single crystals.
