  • This paper presents the study on damage diagnosis of an intelligent cantilevered beams using PZT actuator and PVDF sensor This study provides the theoretical and experimental verification to examine structural damage. Time domain analysis for the non-destructive detection of damage is presented by parameterized partial differential equations and Galerkin approximation techniques. The time histories of the vibration response of structure were used to identify the presence of damage. Furthermore, this systematic approach permits one to use the piezomaterials to both excite and sense the vibration of structures. We also carried out the experimental verification about reliability of theoretical methods fur detecting the damage of a composite beam with PZT actuator and PVDF sensor. Experimental results are presented from tests on cantilevered composite beams which is damaged at different location and different dimensions. The results were compared with the simulation results. Good agreement between the results was found for the time shifts and amplitude difference in transients response of the cantilevered beam.

  • Theoretical and experimental free vibration characteristics of cantilevered laminated composite beams with single or multiple transverse non-propagating open cracks are investigated. The presence of intrinsic cracks in beams modifies the flexibility and in turn free vibration characteristics of the structures, and the existence of the multiple cracks in an anisotropic composite beam affects the free vibration characteristics in a more complex fashion compared with the beam with a single crack. Also the experimental results are well coincide with the numerical results in the decrease of natural frequencies and the transformation of mode shapes because of intrinsic cracks in the composite or aluminum beams. It is revealed that non-destructive crack detection(NDT) or vibration based inspection(VBI) is possible by analyzing the free vibration responses of cracked composite beams.

  • The responses of composite laminated beams modeled with finite element and excited by stochastic loading are studied. The cantilevered laminated beam having a 5 ply configuration is considered. The beam is 1m long, 0.1m wide, and 0.02m thick, yielding a length to thickness ratio of L/h=50. The laminated beams was assumed to be made of Born Epoxy. The four nodes at the free end of the cantilever were loaded with identical zero-mean white noise excitations. Stress and failure analysis loaded with identical zero-mean white noise excitations is carried out. Along with the obtained results, comparison and discussion are presented for the cases of symmetric-ply, antisymmetric-ply, angle-ply, and cross-ply laminated beams.

  • In this study free vibration analysis of a cracked Goland composite wing is investigated. The wing is modelled as a cantilevered beam based on Euler- Bernoulli equations. Also, composite material is modelled based on lamina fiber-reinforced. Edge crack is modelled by additional boundary conditions and local flexibility matrix in crack location, Castigliano's theorem and energy release rate formulation. Governing differential equations are extracted by Hamilton's principle. Using the separation of variables method, general solution in the normalized form for bending and torsion deflection is achieved then expressions for the cross-sectional rotation, the bending moment, the shear force and the torsional moment for the cantilevered beam are obtained. The cracked beam is modelled by separation of beam into two interconnected intact beams. Free vibration analysis of the beam is performed by applying boundary conditions at the fixed end, the free end, continuity conditions in the crack location of the beam and dynamic stiffness matrix determinant. Also, the effects of various parameters such as length and location of crack and fiber angle on natural frequencies and mode shapes are studied. Modal analysis results illustrate that natural frequencies and mode shapes are affected by depth and location of edge crack and coupling parameter.

  • A non-destructive time domain approach to examine structural damage using parameterized partial differential equations and Galerkin approximation techniques is presented. The time domain analysis for damage detection is independent of modal parameters and analytical models unlike frequency domain methods which generally rely on analytical models. The time history of the vibration response of the structure was used to identify the presence of damage. Damage in a structure causes changes in the physical coefficients of mass density, elastic modulus and damping coefficients. This is a part of our ongoing effort on the general problem of modeling and parameter estimation for internal damping mechanisms in a composite beam. Namely, in detecting damage through time-domain or frequency-domain data from smart sensors, the common damages are changed in modal properties such as natural frequencies, mode shapes, and mode shape curvature. This paper examines the use of beam-like structures with piezoceramic sensors and actuators to perform identification of those physical parameters, and detect the damage. Experimental results are presented from tests on cantilevered composite beams damaged at different locations and different dimensions. It is demonstrated that the method can sense the presence of damage and obtain the position of a damage.

  • Composite materialsuch as glass-fiber reinforced plastic and carbon-fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) shows anisotropic property and have been widely used for structural members and outfitings of ships. The structural safety of composite structures has been generally evaluated via finite element analysis. This paper presents a technique for updating the finite element model of anisotropic beams or plates via natural frequencies. The finite element model updates involved a compensation process of anisotropic material properties, such as the elastic and shear moduli of orthotropic structural members. The technique adopted was based on a discrete genetic algorithm, which is an optimization technique. The cost function was adopted to assess the optimization problem, which consisted of the calculated and referenced low-order natural frequencies for the target structure. The optimization process was implemented with MATLAB, which includes the finite element updates and the corresponding natural frequency calculations with MSC/NASTRAN. Material properties of a virtual cantilevered orthotropic beam were estimated to verify the presented method and the results obtained were compared with the reference values. Furthermore, the technique was applied to a cantilevered CFRP beam to successfully estimate the unknown material properties.

  • An analysis to determine shear centers for anisotropic elastic thin-walled composite beams, cantilevered and loaded transversely at the free end is presented. The shear center is formulated based on familiar strength of material procedures analogous to those for isotropic beams. These procedures call for a balancing of torsional moments on the cross sectional surface and lead to a condition of zero resultant torsional couple. As a consequence, due the presence of anisotropic coupling, certain non-classical effects are manifested and are illustrated in two example problems. The most distinguishing result is that twisting may occur for composite beams even if shear forces are applied at the shear center. The derived shear center locations do not depend on any specific anisotropic bending theories per se, but only on the values of bending and shear stresses which such theories produce.

  • Free vibration characteristics of cantilevered laminated composite beams with a transverse non0propagating open carck are investigated. In the present analysis a special ply-angle distribution referred to as asymmetric stiffness configuration inducing the elastic coupling between chord-wise bending and extension is considered. The open crack is modelled as an equivalent rotational spring whose spring constant is calculated on the basis of fracture mechanics of composite material structures. Governing equations of a composite beam with a open crack are derived via Hamilton's Principle and Timoshenko beam theory encompassing transverse shear and rotary inertia effect. the effects of various parameters such as the ply angle, fiber volume fraction, crack depth, crack position and transverse shear on the free vibration characteristics of the beam with a crack is highlighted. The numerical results show that the natural frequencies obtained from Timoshenko beam theory are always lower than those from Euler beam theory. The presence of intrinsic cracks in anisotropic composite beams modifies the flexibility and in turn free vibration characteristics of the structures. It is revealed that non-destructive crack detection is possible by analyzing the free vibration responses of a cracked beam.

  • The flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams by external bonding of composite materials has proved to be an efficient and practical technique. This paper presents a study on the flexural performance of reinforced concrete continuous beams with three spans (one span and two cantilevered) strengthened by bonding carbon fiber fabric (CFRP). The model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the strengthened continuous beam, i.e., the continuous concrete beam, the FRP plate and the adhesive layer. The adherend shear deformations have been included in the present theoretical analyses by assuming a linear shear stress through the thickness of the adherends. Remarkable effect of shear deformations of adherends has been noted in the results. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions that shows good agreement, and It shows the effectiveness of CFRP strips in enhancing shear capacity of continuous beam. It is shown that both the normal and shear stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam.
