  • Most recognition methods of car licence plate have difficulties concerning plate recognition rates and system stability in that restricted car images are used and good image capture environment is required. To overcome these difficulties, I proposed a new recognition method of car licence plates, in which both intensity variation and color information are used. For a captured car image, multiple candidate plate-bands are extracted based on the number of intensity variation. To have an equal performance on abnormally dark and bright Images. plate lightness is calculated and adjusted based on the brightness of plate background. Candidate plate regions are extracted using contour following on plate color pixels in oath plate band. A candidate region is decided as a real plate region after extracting character regions and then recognizing them. I recognize characters using template matching since total number of possible characters is small and they art machine printed. To show the efficiency of the proposed method, I tested it on 200 car images and found that the method shows good performance.

  • The artificial captions appearing in videos include information that relates to the videos. In order to obtain the information carried by captions, many methods for caption extraction from videos have been studied. Most traditional methods of detecting caption region have used one frame. However video include not only spatial information but also temporal information. So we propose a method of detection caption region using temporal and spatial information. First, we make improved Text-Appearance-Map and detect continuous candidate regions through matching between candidate-regions. Second, we detect disappearing captions using disappearance test in candidate regions. In case of captions disappear, the caption regions are decided by a merging process which use temporal and spatial information. Final, we decide final caption regions through ANNs using edge direction histograms for verification. Our proposed method was experienced on many kinds of captions with a variety of sizes, shapes, positions and the experiment result was evaluated through Recall and Precision.

  • In this paper, we propose a robust lip detection algorithm using color clustering. At first, we adopt AdaBoost algorithm to extract facial region and convert facial region into Lab color space. Because a and b components in Lab color space are known as that they could well express lip color and its complementary color, we use a and b component as the features for color clustering. The nearest neighbour clustering algorithm is applied to separate the skin region from the facial region and K-Means color clustering is applied to extract lip-candidate region. Then geometric characteristics are used to extract final lip region. The proposed algorithm can detect lip region robustly which has been shown by experimental results.

  • Crosses between Korean and Landrace pigs have revealed a large quantitative trait loci (QTL) region for fat deposition in a region (89 cM) of porcine chromosome 4 (SSC4). To more finely map this QTL region and identify candidate genes for this trait, comparative mapping of pig and human chromosomes was performed in the present study. A region in the human genome that corresponds to the porcine QTL region was identified in HSA1q21. Furthermore, the LMNA gene, which is tightly associated with fat augmentation in humans, was localized to this region. Radiation hybrid (RH) mapping using a Sus scrofa RH panel localized LMNA to a region of 90.3 cM in the porcine genome, distinct from microsatellite marker S0214 (87.3 cM). Two-point analysis showed that LMNA was linked to S0214, SW1996, and S0073 on SSC4 with logarithm (base 10) of odds scores of 20.98, 17.78, and 16.73, respectively. To clone the porcine LMNA gene and to delineate the genomic structure and sequences, including the 3'untranslated region (UTR), rapid amplification of cDNA ends was performed. The coding sequence of porcine LMNA consisted of 1,719 bp, flanked by a 5'UTR and a 3'UTR. Two synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in exons 3 and 7. Association tests showed that the SNP located in exon 3 (A193A) was significantly associated with weight at 30 wks (p<0.01) and crude fat content (p<0.05). This association suggests that SNPs located in LMNA could be used for marker-assisted selection in pigs.

  • In this paper, we proposed the algorithm for detection of microtalcification by automatic threshold decision based on region growing method. The region for optimal threshold is grown from local maximum pixel by increasing repeatedly threshold in microralcification candidate region. Then, the optimal threshold is automatically decided at the maximum value of the contrast and edge sharpness in this region. Microcalcifications could be efficiently detected as satisfied result that true positive ratio is 81.5% and average false positive numbers are 1.1 about total 299 microcalcifirations in real image. In a result, we showed that this algorithm can be used to aid diagnostic-radiologist for the diagnosis of the early phase of breast cancer.

  • In this study, we propose a new method for generating candidate solutions based on both the Cauchy and the Gaussian probability distributions in order to use the merit of the solutions generated by these distributions. The Cauchy probability distribution has larger probability in the tail region than the Gaussian distribution. Thus, the Cauchy distribution can yield higher probabilities of generating candidate solutions of large-varied variables, which in turn has an advantage of searching wider area of variable space. On the contrary, the Gaussian distribution can yield higher probabilities of generating candidate solutions of small-varied variables, which in turn has an advantage of searching deeply smaller area of variable space. In order to compare and analyze the performance of the proposed method against the conventional method, we carried out experiments using benchmarking problems of real valued functions. From the result of the experiment, we found that the proposed method based on the Cauchy and the Gaussian distributions outperformed the conventional one for most of benchmarking problems, and verified its superiority by the statistical hypothesis test.

  • TFT-LCD automatic defect inspection system for detecting defects in place of the visual tester does pre-processing, candidate defect pixel detection, and recognition and classification through a blob analysis. An over-detection result of defects acts as an undue burden of blob analysis for recognition and classification. In this paper, we propose defect detection method based on the histogram distribution modeling of TFT-LCD image to minimize over-detection of candidate defective pixels. Primary defect candidate pixels are detected estimating the skewness of the luminance distribution histogram of the background pixels. Based on the detected defect pixels, the defective pixels other than noise pixels are detected using the distribution histogram model of the local area. Experimental results confirm that the proposed method shows an excellent defect detection result on the image containing the various types of defects and the reduction of the degree of over-detection as well.

  • After pubertal, cohort of small antral follicles enters to gonadotrophin-sensitive development, called recruited follicles. This study was aimed to identify candidate genes in follicular cyclic recruitment via analysis of protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in ovine granulosa cells of small antral follicles between follicular and luteal phases were accumulated among gene/protein symbols of the Ensembl annotation. Following directed graphs, PTPN6 and FYN have the highest indegree and outdegree, respectively. Since, these hubs being up-regulated in ovine granulosa cells of small antral follicles during the follicular phase, it represents an accumulation of blood immune cells in follicular phase in comparison with luteal phase. By contrast, the up-regulated hubs in the luteal phase including CDK1, INSRR and TOP2A which stimulated DNA replication and proliferation of granulosa cells, they known as candidate genes of the cyclic recruitment.

  • By a series of positional cloning, we successfully narrowed down the AM candidate region to approximately 1.2 Mbp on GGA2q including 7 functional genes. Subsequently, we identified WWP1 gene as the most likely AM candidate by sequence comparison. The amino acid sequence around the candidate mutation was highly conserved among tetrapods, suggesting that WWP1 is the causative gene of chicken muscular dystrophy. Transfection of mutated WWP1 gene into $C_2C_{12}$ myoblasts disrupted muscle differentiation process. The abnormal muscle differentiation is a characteristic of chicken muscular dystrophy, so we could demonstrate a part of phenotype of the disease. Furthermore, western blotting revealed that accumulation of caveolin-3 protein is limited in damaged muscle of muscular dystrophic chicken, suggesting caveolin-3 may be associated with the pathological change of the disease. We could conclude that WWP1 gene is the responsible one for chicken muscular dystrophy from these results, but the mechanism leading the onset should be clarified in the future. The information will contribute to the study of chicken muscular dystrophy and the corresponding human dystrophies.

  • In recent years, video detection systems have been implemented in various infrastructures such as airport, public transportation, power generation system, water dam and so on. Recognizing moving objects in video sequence is an important problem in computer vision, with applications in several fields, such as video surveillance and target tracking. Segmentation and tracking of multiple vehicles in crowded situations is made difficult by inter-object occlusion. In the system described in this paper, the mean shift algorithm is firstly used to filter and segment a color vehicle image in order to get candidate regions. These candidate regions are then analyzed and classified in order to decide whether a candidate region contains a license plate or not. And then some characters in the license plate is recognized by using the fuzzy ARTMAP neural network, which is a relatively new architecture of the neural network family and has the capability to learn incrementally unlike the conventional BP network. We finally design a license plate recognition system using the mean shift algorithm and fuzzy ARTMAP neural network and show its performance via some computer simulations.
