  • Recent advances in the internet infrastructure have resulted in a large number of huge Web sites and portals worldwide. These Web sites are being visited by various types of users in many different ways. Among all the web page access sequences from different users, some of them occur so frequently that may need an attention from those who are interested. We call them frequent access patterns and access sequences that can be frequent the candidate patterns. Since these candidate patterns play an important role in the incremental Web mining, it is important to efficiently generate, add, delete, and search for them. This thesis presents a novel tree structure that can efficiently store the candidate patterns and a related set of algorithms for generating the tree structure, adding new patterns, deleting unnecessary patterns, and searching for the needed ones. The proposed tree structure has a kind of the 3 dimensional link structure and its nodes are layered.

  • Greedy forwarding is the key mechanism of geographic routing and is one of the protocols used most commonly in wireless sensor networks. Greedy forwarding uses 1-hop local information to forward packets to the destination and does not have to maintain the routing table, and thus it takes small overhead and has excellent scalability. However, the signal intensity reduces exponentially with the distance in realistic wireless sensor network, and greedy forwarding consumes a lot of energy, since it forwards the packets to the neighbor node closest to the destination. Previous proposed greedy forwarding protocols are the sender-based greedy forwarding that a sender selects a neighbor node to forward packets as the forwarding node and hence they cannot guarantee energy efficient forwarding in unpredictable wireless environment. In this paper, we propose the receiver-based greedy forwarding called RGF where one of the neighbor nodes that received the packet forwards it by itself. In RGF, sender selects several energy efficient nodes as candidate forwarding nodes and decides forwarding priority of them in order to prevent unnecessary transmissions. The simulation results show that RGF improves delivery rate up to maximum 66.8% and energy efficiency, 60.9% compared with existing sender-based greedy forwarding.

  • In this paper, we present a reliability-based iterative proportionality-logic decoding algorithm for two classes of structured low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The main contributions of this paper include: 1) Syndrome messages instead of extrinsic messages are processed and exchanged between variable nodes and check nodes, which can reduce the decoding complexity; 2) a more flexible decision mechanism is developed in which the decision threshold can be self-adjusted during the iterative process. Such decision mechanism is particularly effective for decoding the majority-logic decodable codes; 3) only part of the variable nodes satisfying the pre-designed criterion are involved for the presented algorithm, which is in the proportionality-logic sense and can further reduce the computational complexity. Simulation results show that, when combined with factor correction techniques and appropriate proportionality parameter, the presented algorithm performs well and can achieve fast decoding convergence rate while maintaining relative low decoding complexity, especially for small quantized levels (3-4 bits). The presented algorithm provides a candidate for those application scenarios where the memory load and the energy consumption are extremely constrained.

  • A Software-Defined Wireless Sensor Networks (SDWSNs) architecture is firstly proposed to address the issues of inflexible architecture strategies and low scalability of traditional WSNs in this article. The SDWSNs architecture involves the design of a software-defined sensor network model and a customized controller architecture, along with an analysis of the functionalities of each management module within the controller architecture. Secondly, to tackle limited energy problem of sensor nodes, a network coding opportunistic routing method (SDN-COR) is presented based on SDWSNs. This method incorporates considerations of coding opportunities, vertical distance, and remaining energy of nodes to design a metric for encoding opportunistic routing. By combining opportunistic forwarding mechanisms, candidate forwarding sets are selected and sorted based on priority to prioritize data transmission by higher-priority nodes. Simulation results indicate that, comparing with conventional methods, this approach achieves reduction in energy consumption by an average of 21.5%, improves network throughput by 24%, and extends network lifetime by 20%.

  • By introducing additional nodes called Steiner points, the problem of Steiner Minimum Tree whose length can be shorter than Minimum Spanning Tree and which connects all input terminal nodes belongs to Non-Polynomial Complete domain. Though diverse heuristic methods can be applied to the problem, most of them may meet serious pains in computing and waiting for a solution of the problem with numerous input nodes. For numerous input nodes, an efficient PTAS approximation method producing candidate unit steiner trees with portals in most bottom layer, merging them hierarchically to construct their parent steiner trees in upper layer and building swiftly final approximation Steiner tree in most top layer is suggested in this paper. The experiment with 16,000 input nodes and designed 16 unit areas in most bottom layer shows 85.4% execution time improvement in serial processing and 98.9% in parallel processing comparing with pure Steiner heuristic method, though 0.24% overhead of tree length. Therefore, the suggested PTAS Steiner tree method can have a wide range applications to build a large scale approximation Steiner tree quickly.

  • In the MPR selection algorithm of Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR), each node selects own MPRs independently, so most of nodes are selected to MPR at least once. To cope with this problem, the MPR candidate selection algorithm was proposed. The MPR candidate selection algorithm can reduce the number of MPRs, but the efficiencies of route and connectivity decline due to decreased number of MPRs. So, in this paper, we propose the Significant Multi-Point Relay (S-MPR) selection algorithm which can enhance the performance of ad hoc network by improving the MPR selection algorithm of OLSR. In proposed S-MPR selection algorithm, each node selects the most important node to S-MPR to guarantee the connectivity then selects remaining MPRs in MPR candidates. So proposed S-MPR selection algorithm can reduce the overhead of many MPRs without decline of routing performance. To show the performance gain of proposed S-MPR selection algorithm, we simulate the proposed S-MPR selection algorithm by using OPNET.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient grid based routing scheme using the location information in order to reduce the routing cost in mobile ad-hoc networks. In our proposed scheme, all nodes can be a candidate to forward messages to the specified destination node and reduce the management cost of head nodes because they do not exist. The intermediate nodes determine the next hop relaying messages on the basis of location relations between a node and a grid zone. The proposed scheme explores the routing path considering the direction of a node using the coordinate of a grid zone and neighbor node information. It also maintains the routing path considering connectivities among the nodes. In order to show the superiority of the proposed routing scheme, we compare it with the existing grid based routing scheme in terms of the overhead of message, the success rate of transmission.

  • Sensor network applications need synchronized time extremely such as object tracking, consistent state updates, duplicate detection, and temporal order delivery. This paper describes reliable time synchronization protocol (RTSP) for wireless sensor networks. In the proposed method, synchronization error is decreased by creating hierarchical tree with lower depth and reliability is improved by maintaining and updating information of candidate parent nodes. The RTSP reduces recovery time and communication overheads comparing to TPSN when there are topology changes owing to moving of nodes, running out of energy and physical crashes. Simulation results show that RTSP has about 20% better performance than TPSN in synchronization accuracy. And the number of message in the RTSP is $20%{\sim}60%$ lower than that in the TPSN when nodes are failed in the network. In case of different transmission range of nodes, the communication overhead in the RTSP is reduced up to 40% than that in the TPSN at the maximum.

  • In this paper, we introduce an FARNS (Flooding algorithm with Adaptive Retransmission Nodes Selection). It is an efficient cross layer-based flooding technique to solve broadcast storm problem that is produced by simple flooding of nodes in wireless sensor network. FARNS can decrease waste of unnecessary energy by preventing retransmission action of whole network node by deciding retransmission candidate nodes that are selected by identification in MAC and distance with neighborhood node through received signal strength information in PHY. In simulation part, we show the results that FARNS has excellent performance than the other flooding schemes in terms of broadcast forwarding ratio, broadcast delivery ratio, number of redundancy packets and overhead. And FARNS can adjust of node ratio for retransmission operation, it can solve broadcast storm problem as well as meet the requirements of various network environments.

  • In this paper, we consider a rumor source inference problem when sufficiently many nodes heard the rumor in the network. This is an important problem because information spread in networks is fast in many real-world phenomena such as diffusion of a new technology, computer virus/spam infection in the internet, and tweeting and retweeting of popular topics and some of this information is harmful to other nodes. This problem has been much studied, where it has been shown that the detection probability cannot be beyond 31% even for regular trees if the number of infected nodes is sufficiently large. Motivated by this, we study the impact of query that is asking some additional question to the candidate nodes of the source and propose budget assignment algorithms of a query when the network administrator has a finite budget. We perform various simulations for the proposed method and obtain the detection probability that outperforms to the existing prior works.
