  • This study is about saliva from a GIGONG's point of view, it's importance, and it's funtion that recently medical world proved. And here is GIGONG training with saliva. The results were summarized as follows. 1. It is detected that saliva have function to prevent symptoms of senility and have effect of an $anti{\sim}cancer$ medically in recent years. So it is said that science proved narrowly that so called a predecessor speak of salive interms of high praise and they already experienced. 2. Similar substance to saliva exist in human body besides nature food, but human body have materials that deal with all situation to occur from every kind of environment and disease. And exactly saliva is an example of it. 3. We cannot turn back sweat, blood, tears and sperm again that is out of human body once, but we can swallow again only saliva. Therefore, we must experience training that swallow saliva to make us healthy by ourselves, and we don't have to commit a foolish act to cough up saliva at random that a predecessor speak of in terms of high praise, and to be second to JUNG(精). 4. Saliva is a kind of antibody or hormone, so I think that we need to make a study of using saliva with a GUIGONG that is an example of way to strengthen immunity of human body.

  • Objectives : Through the literature on the effect of Aconiti Cliare Tuber, Radix Aconiti, we are finding out the clinical posibility and revealing the more effective to intractable disease. Methods : We inverstigated the literatures of Oriental Medicine and experimental reports about Aconiti Cliare Tuber, Radix Aconiti. Results : 1. The taste of Aconiti Cliare Tuber, Radix Aconiti is hot, sweet, bitter, warm and hot, and the effect is dehumidification, warm up and relieve the pain, so it can be used for arthritis, hemiplegia, carpopedal spasm, sciatica, cancer, numbness. 2. A toxic constituent of Aconiti Cliare Tuber, Radix Aconitiis is induced by aconitine alkaloid, develope toxic symptoms and result in death. So it needs suitabe treatment for safety. 3. It is known that the toxicopathy due to Radix Aconiti was 3-30g(dosage for adult) and Aconiti Ciliare Tuber was 1-9g. But only using aconitine alkaloid to oral feeding, the toxicopathy due to 0.2mg/kg and lethal dose is 3-4mg. So we using this for treating, we must be careful and need more varialble study about toxicopathy, lethal dose. 4. On clinical treatment, we thought Aconiti Cliare Tuber, Radix Aconiti is so effective to intractable disease after control the toxicity, it may be need variable study on toxicity and clinical effects.

Inhibitory Effects of Soyeum Pharmacopuncture (SPP) on Rheumatoid Arthritis in Collagen II-induced Arthritis (CIA) Mice (소염약침액이 Collagen II 유발 관절염 mouse의 TNF-α, IFN-γ 생성 및 비장세포 증식에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : The aim is to examine the effect of Soyeum Pharmacopuncture (SPP) on collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) in DBA/1OlaHsd mice. Methods : To determine the effect of SPP on chronic IFNlammatory joint disease, we induced CIA in DBA/1OlaHsd mice by immunization with bovine type II collagen. Animals were treated with intraperitoneal injection doses of 2 mg/kg of SPP, beginning 3 days before the expected onset of disease symptoms. Inhibitory Effects of SPP were observed by serum levels of TNF-${\alpha}$, and IFN-${\gamma}$,,, or cell proliferation in the spleen cell culture and histological examination of knee joint. Results : In the CIA Mice, serum levels of TNF-${\alpha}$, and IFN-${\gamma}$,, production in the spleen cell culture were reduced. At the histopathological examination of knee joint, chondropathy of cartilage in the synovial joint in the SP group was repaired while compared with control group. Conclusion : These results suggest that the SPP may be effective for the prevention and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis disease.

Surgical Treatment of Achalasia of the Esophagus -Report of 9 Cases Performed Modified Heller Operation- (Achalasia 의 외과적 치료 -Modified Heller Operation을 시행한 9례의 관찰성적-)

  • Achalasia is a functional disorder of a short segment of the lower esophagus showing obstruction of the esophagogastric junction. Dysphagia. regurgitation and weight loss are outstanding features,however, complicated pulmonary troubles aspiration pneumonitis, bronchiectasis, lung abscess etc. --are sometimes more apparent than the disease entity in children though achalasia is rarely encountered in children. During the period of January, 1961, to May, 1968, the authors experienced 9 cases of achalasia of the esophagus in Chest Surgery Department,N.M.C. 1. Seven of nine were male and four were under 5 years of age. 2. So-called symptoms triad noted in almost every case, and 3 of 4 children showed recurrent attacks of pneumonitis. 3. Chest film showed widened superior mediastinum by dilated esophagus in 6 cases, and pulmonary infiltrations in 3 cases of children. 4. Preoperative diagnosis were achalasia,esophageal stricture by rodent-cidal ingestion and suggestive esophageal cancer in 7 cases,one case and remaining one case. respectively. 5. Modified Heller procedure was performed in all cases with definite diagnosis of achalasia at operation table in misdiagnosed 2 cases. 6. Immediate postoperative complications were 2 cases of wound infection and one case of atelectasis and no operative mortality encountered. 7. Seven of nine showed excellent result of operation, and good in one case. Remaining one case failed relieving obstruction and underwent interposition of ileocolonic segment with excellent result.

Cavitary Lung Cancer (공동성 폐암의 외과적 고찰)

  • The roentgenologic appearance of carcinoma of the lung may vary considerably from case to case. And when it forms cavitary lesion, it is frequently confused with benign lesions and treated conservatively. Twenty-seven patients with cavitary bronchogenic carcinoma were treated in our St. Marys Hospital during the period 1984-1989. There were 24 males and 3 females. They ranged in age from 43 to 76 years. Symptoms of cough, blood-streaked sputum or pleuritic chest pain were present in all patients one month to 6 months before hospital admission and 7 patients among them were delayed in recognition of the malignancy from z month to 3 months. Of 27 malignancies with cavity, 22[81.5 %] were squamous cell ca., 3[11.1%] were large cell ca., and 2[7.4%] were adenoca. And of 22 squamous cell carcinomas, 5 were well differentiated, 13 were moderately and 4 were poorly. All lobes except Rt. middle lobe were involved [RUL 2 cases, RLL 13 cases, LUL 3 cases and LLL 9 cases]. We explored 16 patients and performed 7 lobectomy, 4 bi-lobectomy, 2 pneumonectomy and 3 08zC. Post-operative follow-up examination of the resected 13 patients indicated one and two year survival rates of 69.1 %[9/13 cases] and 37.5%[3/8 cases] respectively, and now 6 survivors whose post-operative periods were from 4 months to 37 months.

Chemical Constituents Identified from Fruit Body of Cordyceps bassiana and Their Anti-Inflammatory Activity

  • Cordyceps bassiana is one of Cordyceps species with anti-oxidative, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, anti-angiogenic, and anti-nociceptive activities. This mushroom has recently demonstrated to have an ability to reduce 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene-induced atopic dermatitis symptoms in NC/Nga mice. In this study, we further examined phytochemical properties of this mushroom by column chromatography and HPLC analysis. By chromatographic separation and spectroscopic analysis, 8 compounds, such as 1,9-dimethylguanine (1), adenosine (2), uridine (3), nicotinamide (4), 3-methyluracil (5), 1,7-dimethylxanthine (6), nudifloric acid (7), and mannitol (8) were identified from 6 different fractions and 4 more subfractions. Through evaluation of their anti-inflammatory activities using reporter gene assay and mRNA analysis, compound 1 was found to block luciferase activity induced by $NF-{\kappa}B$ and AP-1, suppress the mRNA levels of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and tumor necrosis factor $(TNF)-{\alpha}$. Therefore, our data strongly suggests that compound 1 acts as one of major principles in Cordyceps bassiana with anti-inflammatory and anti-atopic dermatitis activities.

Prevalence of Pathological Brain Lesions in Girls with Central Precocious Puberty: Possible Overestimation?

  • Background: Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is routinely performed to identify brain lesions in girls with central precocious puberty (CPP). We aimed to investigate the prevalence and type of brain lesions among Korean girls with CPP and evaluate the need for routine brain MRI examinations. Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated data on 3,528 girls diagnosed with CPP from April 2003 to December 2016, and identified 317 girls who underwent sellar MRI. Exclusion criteria were patients with a known brain tumor or who did not undergo brain MRI due to refusal or the decision of the pediatric endocrinologist. Results: Normal sellar MRI findings were observed in 291 of the 317 girls (91.8%). Incidental findings were observed in 26 girls (8.2%). None of the patients had pathological brain lesions. Conclusion: The prevalence of intracranial lesions among girls who were generally healthy and without neurological symptoms but diagnosed with CPP was lower than that previously reported. Furthermore, none of the identified lesions required treatment. It may be prudent to reconsider the routine use of brain MRI to screen all patients with CPP, especially if they are healthy and neurologically asymptomatic, and are girls aged 6-8 years.

Functionality and Safety of Probiotics (프로바이오틱스의 기능성과 안전성)

  • Probiotics stabilize intestinal microflora, reduce constipation, reduce decay by inhibiting harmful bacteria, and prevent diseases. Probiotics have also been studied for their possible roles in immune activation, treatment of cancer, remediation of cholesterol, treatment of diabetes, alleviation of allergies, and relief of lactose intolerance. However, recent data concerning the side effects of probiotics have prompted debate regarding their efficacy and safety. Major adverse events associated with probiotics are gastrointestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea, gastrointestinal disorders, and vomiting, along with skin rash and urticaria. Probiotics occasionally cause sepsis in infants with poor immunity and elderly people with severe diseases. In contrast to previous studies that described the efficacy of probiotics in intestinal regulation, some recent studies have reported that the activity of intestinal microbes becomes weak as a result of the influx of probiotics. The data indicate that the safety of probiotics is not guaranteed and that further investigations are needed.

Trends in Utilization of Transnasal Esophagoscopy (경비강 식도경의 임상적 활용)

  • The development of office-based, unsedated transnasal esophagoscopy (TNE) has proven to be a major technological advance and with time and experience the application of this technology is becoming more widespread. TNE has allowed otolaryngologists to perform a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the office setting. Studies consistently demonstrate that the image quality and diagnostic capability of TNE is equivalent to conventional esophagoscopy. The modern TNE endoscopes offer high quality optics, air-insufflation, and irrigation capability through a 2-mm working channel, and the ability to perform biopsies and select procedures. In general, the role of TNE in the head and neck patient is three-fold : to screen for synchronous and metachronous esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) ; to differentiate post-treatment changes/symptoms from malignancy ; and to perform certain office-based procedures. TNE offers many specific advantages to the head and neck patient that are not afforded by conventional esophagoscopy. Because of surgical and postirradiation changes, many HNSCC patients have trismus or neck stiffness preventing completion of conventional transoral esophagoscopy. Perhaps most importantly, TNE provides enhanced patient safety, increased tolerability, better practice efficiency, and cost savings. For these reasons, TNE has become a particularly useful tool in the otolaryngologist's armamentarium.

Estrogenic Activity of Leguminosae Species in Korea using MCF-7 Cells (유방암 세포주를 이용한 국내 자생 콩과식물의 에스트로겐 활성검색)

  • Leguminosae plants are known for its phytoestrogen constituents which play a major role in the prevention of osteoporosis, cancer and heart disease. In this study, the estrogenic activity of 158 samples from 58 species, 3 subspecies and 10 varieties of Leguminosae plants growing in Korea was evaluated. An estrogen, 17β-estradiol was used as a reference compound, and the potency of each sample was expressed in relative efficacy (%) compared to that of the reference by a reporter gene assay using MCF-7 cells. As results, the estrogenic activity of methanolic extracts of Phaseolus vulgaris var. humilis, Sophora flavescens, Lespedeza × robusta, Indigofera pseudotinctoria, Maackia amurensis, Glycine soja, Wisteria floribunda, Robinia pseudoacacia, Astragalus sinicus, Pueraria lobata, Lespedeza maximowiczii var. tomentella, Trifolium repens and Crotalaria sessiliflora showed similar to or higher at 100 ㎍/ml than the positive control at 10 nM. These findings can be a potential evidence for developing estrogen alternatives resolving various types of menopause symptoms with information on proper harvest season and usage plant part. To the best of our knowledge, the estrogenic activity of Lespedeza × robusta, Indigofera pseudotinctoria, Wisteria floribunda, Robinia pseudoacacia and Lespedeza maximowiczii var. tomentella is reported for the first time in this study.
