  • Although improper integrals constitute a concept of great utility for Mathematics students, it appears that students are unable to assimilate this concept within the wider system of concepts they learn in their first year of Mathematics studies. In this paper we describe a competence model used in a study about the kind of understanding students possess about improper integral calculus when two registers of representation come into play. Competence will be considered as the coherent articulation of different semiotic registers. After analysing the results of a questionnaire, six students were selected to be interviewed on the basis of their overall results and the significance of their answers. For the interview, five original questions from the questionnaire were used together with a new question. In this article we will analyse, from our theoretical point of view, the work carried out by one student who was interviewed to show how our competence model works and we will discuss this formal competence model used.

  • Amur silver grass (Miscanthus sacchariflorus) and reed canary grass (Phalaris arundinacea) were selected for RDX removal experiments in hydroponic culture conditions based on vegetation survey at three shooting ranges in northern Kyunggi province. Seedling of two plants were grown in 1/4 strength Hoagland solution in quadruplicates containing 10, 20, 30, 40 mg/L RDX for 15 days along with control and blank treatments. During the 15 days of incubation, pH and RDX concentration in medium were routinely analyzed and RDX contents in the shoot and the root were determined after solvent extraction at the end of the experiments. Both plant species showed no symptoms of RDX phyto-toxicity. The pseudo first order RDX-removal constants for amur silver grass and reed canary grass were in the range of $0.0143{\sim}0.0484day^{-1}$ and $0.0971{\sim}0.1853^{-1}$, respectively. Plant biomass normalized RDX removal rates, which decreased with the increase of initial RDX concentration, were in the range of $0.27{\sim}1.01mL{\cdot}g^{-1}day^{-1}$ and $0.87{\sim}1.66mL{\cdot}g^{-1}day^{-1}$ for amur silver grass and reed canary grass, respectively. After 15 days of treatment, RDX removal from the medium decreased from 49.0% to 23.7% with increase in the initial RDX concentration in amur silver grass and 7.3% of the initial RDX remained in the plant. In reed canary grass planted medium, less than 16.8% and 5% of the initial RDX remained in the medium and in the plant, respectively. Large quantities of unidentified polar compound, which was not detected in amur silver grass, accumulated in the root and shoot of reed silver grass.

  • With the recent steady development of IoT technology, it is widely used in medical systems and smart TV watches. 66% of software development is developed through language C, which is vulnerable to memory attacks, and acts as a threat to IoT devices using language C. A stack-smashing overflow attack inserts a value larger than the user-defined buffer size, overwriting the area where the return address is stored, preventing the program from operating normally. IoT devices with low memory capacity are vulnerable to stack smashing overflow attacks. In addition, if the existing vaccine program is applied as it is, the IoT device will not operate normally. In order to defend against stack smashing overflow attacks on IoT devices, we used canaries among several detection methods to set conditions with random values, checksum, and DSLR (random storage locations), respectively. Two canaries were placed within the buffer, one in front of the return address, which is the end of the buffer, and the other was stored in a random location in-buffer. This makes it difficult for an attacker to guess the location of a canary stored in a fixed location by storing the canary in a random location because it is easy for an attacker to predict its location. After executing the detection program, after a stack smashing overflow attack occurs, if each condition is satisfied, the program is terminated. The set conditions were combined to create a number of eight cases and tested. Through this, it was found that it is more efficient to use a detection method using DSLR than a detection method using multiple conditions for IoT devices.

  • Nine plant species were selected through vegetation survey at three military shooting ranges at northern Gyeonggi Province. Plants were germinated in normal soil and three seedlings were transplanted to a bottom sealed pot containing sandy loam soils contaminated with either RDX (291 mg/kg) or TNT (207 mg/kg). Planted, blank (without plant), and control (without explosive compound) pots were grown in triplicate at a green house for 134 days. During cultivation, transplanted plants exhibited chlorosis and necrosis in flower and leaf by explosive toxicity and stress. Only three plants, Wild soybean, Amur silver grass, Reed canary grass, survived in TNT treated pot, while seven plant species except for field penny cress and jimson weed, thrived in RDX treated pot. Appreciable amount of TNT (61.6~241.2 mg/g-D.W.) was detected only in plant roots. Up to 763.3 mg/g-D.W. along with 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene, an intermediate of TNT, accumulated in the root of wild soybean. In addition, azoxy compounds, abiotic intermediates of TNT, were detected in TNT treated soils. RDX absorbed average 1,839.95 mg/kg in shoot and 204.83 mg/kg in root. Most of TNT in plant was accumulated in underground part whereas RDX was localized in aerial part. Material balance calculation showed that more than 95% of the initial TNT was removed in the planted pots whereas only 60% was removed in the blank pot. The amount of RDX removed from soil was in the order of Amur Silver Grass (51%) > Chickweed (43%) > Evening primrose (38%). Based on the results of pot cultures, Amur silver grass and Reed canary grass are selected as tolerant remedial plants for explosive toxicity.

  • Satellite data (thermal and color imagery) show that offshore flowing filaments off the west coasts of North America, North and South Africa can influence significantly the cross-frontal mixing in the coastal upwelling zones. To evaluate this role, we investigated structure, dynamics and behavior of surface filaments in the Canary and Benguela upwelling regions on the base of daily satellite IR and VIS imagery (AVHRR NOAA, MODIS-Aqua). It was found that seasonal variability of the filaments location depends on intra-annual shift of general upwelling intensity along the coast. The main statistical characteristics of filaments - length, width, temperature anomaly and estimates of velocity were obtained. Estimates of cross-frontal water exchange due to filamentation based on the statistical data show that these coherent structures play a major role in the water and particle exchange between coastal zone and the open ocean in both upwelling regions.

  • Four genera of metazoan parasites were recovered from 3 of 6 Sebastes pinniger examined during January 2003. Two hundred forty-five metazoan parasites were recovered. Trochopus trituba Sekerak and Arai, 1977 and Anisakis larvae were found to he infected S. finniger Gill and te be abundant in this rockfish. One hundred eleven worms of monogenean trematodes and 134 larval anisakine nematodes were also found in this fishes. Precise positions with regard to gills, fins, and gastrointestinal tracts were recorded on S. pinniger to determine distribution of metazoan parasites of Trochopus trituba, Anisakis simplex larva, Contracaecum sp. larva, and Pseudo terranova decipiens larva. The monogenean trematodes, T. trituba were attacked to the gill arches and fin, and the larval anisakine nematodes, A. simplex, Contracaecum sp.,and P. decipiens were found on the visceral organs such as intestine, omentum and stomach wall. The second gill arches were the most heavily infested and posterodorsal region of the gill arches contained most monegenenn trematodes. The nam site of infestation of larval anisakine nematodes were the intestine.
