The present study has been undertaken to characterize availability of camellia(Camellia japonica L.) as a medicinal plant with antineoplastic and chemosensitizing activities. The crude extracts from fresn camellia flower, young leaves and nutraceutical tea of camellia leaf and flower buds were evaluated on their potential activities against various human cancer cells and multidrug resistance to cancer cells in vitro. The range of cytotoxicity displayed from 120$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL to 200$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL. Catemix 1(CT-1) mixed with camellia and green tea showed high toxicity(respectively IC$\sub$50/=l16$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL, 129$\mu\textrm{g}$/mL) against AML-2/WT, acute myelogenous leukemia cell and MCF-7, brest adenocarcinoma pleual effusion cell. Generally camellia tea mixed with green tea showed higher cytotoxicity than the other camellia teas mixed with some herbs(CH). Methanol extract of steamed camellia tea and roasted camellia tea had a chemosensitizing effect to reverse Pgp-mediated MDR. In addition, camellia flower tea of insignificant cytotoxicity, chemosensitizing effect were increased remarkably chemosensitizing effect in mixed flower tea with some herbs.
This study was carried out to investigate the functional properties such as nitrogen solubility, emulsifying property , foaming capapcity , water and oil absorption of Camellia (Camellia japonica .) seed protein isolate in condition of distilled water and 0.5M NaCl solution at pH 2.0∼10.0. Nitrogen solubility of Camellia protein isolate in distilled water showed the minimum value at pH 4.0 and increased at pH lower or higher than the isoelectric point(pH 4.0). It was 90.0 %at pH 10.0 Nitrogen solubility of 0.5M NaCl solution showed a similar pattern with that of distrille dwater but was higher than that of distilled water except pH 2.0 and pH 10.0. Emulsifying activity of Camellia seed protein islate showed the minimum value at pH 4.0, but was higher at ether value of pH. Emulsifying stability of protein isolate was stable by heat treatment for 30min, at 80℃ and increased in 0.5M NaCl solution more than that of distille dwater. Foaming capacity of Camellia seed protein isolate in distill3ed water showed the minimum value near the isoelectric point, While it changed little at other values of pH. Foaming stability slowly decreased as, but didn't make a significant difference as time was delayed . Oil absorption was 1.4ml per a sample of 1g and water absorption was 0.9ml per a sample of 1g. The former was higher than the latter . The content of total amino acid of Camellia protein isolate was 43.67% and the major total amino acid of Camellia protein isolate was 43.67% and the major total amino acid was in the order of glutamic acid , arginine, aspartic acid, and leucine.
This study was carried out to investigate the antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of Camellia japonica extracts for cosmetic applications. Antimicrobial effects of C. japonica were determined against Bacillus cereus by methanol extract of new leaf, stem and stem-leaf; Malassezia pachydermatis, by methanol extract of new leaf and stem-leaf. A methanol extract of new leaf of C. japonica showed strong antimicrobial effect using paper disc method against most species especially in Staphylococcus aureus. Antioxidative activities of C. japonica seed oils were determined by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. The value of $EC_{50}$ of DPPH scavenging activity was 500 mg/mL and that of ABTS scavenging activity was 96.10 mg/mL. C. japonica oil extracts showed lower antioxidative activities than those of gallic acid and ${\alpha}$-tocopherol. Electron microscopic observation of damaged virgin hairs of different ages gave a stabilizing effects after C. japonica seed oil treatment. These results indicated that the extracts of stem, leaf and seed of C. japonica could be used as cosmetic ingredient combined with appropriate formula.
The Camellia japonica vegetation in the Korean Peninsula was investigated by the methology of the Z-M school. The synthesis table of Camellion japonicae were arranged for association classification from 263 quadrats. The vegetation of Camellia japonica forest, classfied as an alliance includes nine new associations : Camellietum japonicae typicum Jin et Kim 2005, Machilo thunbergii-Camellietum japonicae Jin et Kim 2005, Pino thunbergii-Camellietum japonicae Jin et Kim 2005, Castanopo cuspidatae var. sieboldii-Camellietum japonicae Jin et Kim 2005, Lito japonicae-Camellietum japonicae Jin et Kim 2005, Castnnopo cuspidatae var. thunbergii-Camellietum japonicae Jin et Kim 2005, Querco acutae-Camellietum japonicae Jin et Kim 2005, Neolito sericae-Camellietum japonicae Jin et Kim 2005, Cinnamomo japonicae-Camellietum Japonirae Jin et Kim 2005.
The ecological distribution of endomycorrhizas in evergreen woody species native to the evergreen forest ecosystem of Tadohae-haesang National Park in southern Korea in February, 1989 was studied. The abundance and diversity of vesicular-arbuscular (VA) mycorrhizal fungi were also determined. The spore densities ranged from 14 to 326 per 100 g of soil. Most of the spores of mycorrhizal fungi collected from 25 soil samples belonged to the genera Glomus and Gigaspora. The frequency and number of spores in Camellia japonica varied with location. Spores belonging to the genus Gigaspora were not found in Camellia japonica in Yesongri evergreen forests adjacent to the sea. Glomus sp. was the major constituent of the spore assemblage at this site. The most abundant species in Camellia japonica in the Yesongri evergreen forests in Pogildo was Glomus borealis. In the soil of a mountain at Buwhangri, in the central location of the island at an elevation of 250 m, Gigaspora sp. was present and Glomus sp. was a major constituent of the spore assemblage. In the urban area of Haenam spore densities were much higher than in the Pogildo area. The most abundant species in Camellia japonica in the urban area of Haenam was Gigaspora sp..
This research has been undertaken to increase availiability of native Camellia japonica leaf and flower in Korea as a edible-medicinal resource. Chemical compositions, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in different parts of camellia were investigated. Crude protein contained the highest in young leaves(14.22%) but less than 10% in different parts. The contents of crude fat and crude ash were 60.48% in seeds and 5.16% in mature leaves, respectively. Methanol extract of young leaf, flower, and flower bud in camellia showed strong antioxidant activity compared with different parts. Also, antioxidant activity of these was higher than that of BHT, but weaker than that of VtC. Antioxidant activity of various parts in camellia were in order of young leaf > flower bud > flower > mature leaf > stem > bark. Extracts of mature leaf and bark had a remarkable antibacterial activity(0 CFU/$m\ell$) on Bacillus subtilis. The young leaf extract displayed effective growth inhibition against B. subtilis, Candida albicans, and Trichosporon beigelii.
These studies were carried out to know the variation of foliar characteristics of Camellia japonica distributed in Korea. The results are summarized as follows; 1) The values such as leaf length, leaf width, and leaf area were the most highest in Chukdo population, while the lowest in Chejudo population. 2) The values of Wando population showed the most highest in leaf serration characters, while the values of Kochang population the lowest. 3) In the number of cort warts, the values of Chundo population showed the most highest, while Dodcong population the lowest.
The antioxidant activity of various solvent extracts from Jeju camellia mistletoe (Korthalsella japonica (Thunb.) Engl.) was investigated using various in vitro assays as the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging, ferrous ion chelating and reducing power assays. Methanol and ethanol extracts showed the most potent antioxidant activity in all assays tested followed by water extract. The inhibitory effect of the Jeju camellia mistletoe extracts on pancreatic lipase and $\acute{a}$-glucosidase was also evaluated and the results showed that methanol and ethanol extracts markedly reduced both enzyme activities. Therefore, the methanol and ethanol extracts of Jeju camellia mistletoe is definitely worthy of further investigation for these beneficial effects on nutraceutical medicine.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the chemical component of Camellia japonica L. according to picking time. Leaves of Camellia japonica L. were picked in April and May,2003. Free sugars (fructose, glucose and sucrose) and organic acids (citric acid, tartaric acid, succinic acid, acetic acid) were present in the Camellia japonica L. leaf. The contents of total free sugars and organic acids increased as picking time was delayed. The major components of free amino acids were aspartic acid, glutamic acid and histidine, and those of total amino acids were histidine and alanine. The contents of total free amino acids and total amino acids were decreased as picking time was delayed, while the ratio of essential amino acids to the total amino acids increased. The amount of minerals (P, Ca, K, Na and Fe), chlorophyll and total polyphenol increased as picking time was delayed.
