The influence of (-0-Hydroxycitrate(HCA), shown to be a competitive inhibitor of adenosine 5-triphosphate(ATP) citrate lyase, on food intake and body weight, serum triglyceride and cholosterol level, in vivo rates of fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis, and fat cell number and size was investigated. 3 groups of female, 5 weeks old Sprague Dawley rats, 8 animals each, were ad libitum meal-fed or pair-fed(3 hours from 10 : 00 to 13 : 00) AIN based high glucose diet for a total period of 8 weeks. Providing normolipidemic rats orally with 400mg of HCA formula containing approximately 20mg of HCA 1 hour prior to daily feeding schedule significantly depressed in vivo hepatic rates of fatty acid and cholesterol synthesis in the liver and adipose tissue. Serum triglyceride and cholesterol levels were significantly reduced by HCA. At the end of treatment period, the rats administered with HCA resulted in a significantly reduction in body weight gain. The reduction in weights was attributable to a significant decrease in fat cell size with a smaller extent, but not significant, reduction in fat cell number. Rats receiving HCA demonstrated less food intake than the controls ; however, this decreased caloric intake was not fully responsible for the HCA induced depression of hepatic and adipocytic lipogenesis, since experiment using pair-fed cojntrol rats showed, less magnitude but similar results. Both a anorectic and an antilipogenic properties of HCA seem to be responsible for this weight reduction activity of HCA. The outcome of this study suggest that metabolic regulation may be a feasible approach to the control of obesity and hyperlipidemia.
Sodium restricted diets are known to lower blood pressure in salt sensitive, hypertensive patients. Thare is increasing evidence that potassium plays an important role as a protective factor in the regulation of blood pressure. The objective of the current study was to measure parameters of sodium, potassium, and chloride utilization as affected by feeding of substantial quantities of bread made from whole ground white torn meal, whole ground yellow corn meal, and whole ground wheat flour. The breads provided 40 percent of a caloric content of the constant, measured laboratory diet. The 28-day study was divided into an introductory period of 7-days and three experimental periods of 7-days each. Order of assignment to specific treatments for 12 healthy subjects were according to a complete randomized block design. Yellow corn bread diets resulted in the highest potassium retention (243 mg/day) and the lowest urinary sodium and potassium ratio (1.53 $\pm$ 0.26) numerically in comparison to the other test breads. The excretions of sodium and chloride were higher during controlled feeding periods than during the self-selected diet period(p < 0.05). This indicates a response to the higher intake of these electrolytes from the experimental diets than from self-selected diets. There was no significant difference in the effect of white corn bread, yellow corn bread, or whole wheat bread diet on electrolyte status in humans. However, the yellow corn bread diet resulted in a somewhat more favorable urina교 sodium to potassium ratio than that from white corn bread or whole wheat bread diet.
These studies were carried out on 176 persons ranging in age from 20 to 50 years to determine the basal metabolic rates, energy expenditure of various activities, and daily energy expenditure of service personnel in Korea. The measurements of basal metabolic rates were made on 42 subjects by indirect calorimetry using a Douglas' bag and Scholander's gas analyzer. The energy expenditures of various activities of daily life were also measured. The greatest increase in ratio of energy expenditure in the basis of resting metabolism was 277.3% in floor sopping and the least was 40.9% during hair cutting by beauticians. The assessment of the dailly energy expenditure for each subject was made by the factorial method, using a record of their activities throughout each of 24 hours of every survey day. Certain activities were recorded in minute units. The total daily energy expenditure is the sum of all energy expenditure. This was calculated by multiplying the caloric value of the metabolic rate by the time spent on each activity. The result of the total daily energy expenditure records for 17 occupations are summarized. In respect to the daily energy expenditure, most of the occupations are moderate or light work. But the janiter (F), laundress, cook (F), room maid and nurse's aid do heavy work.
The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of iron-enriched cereal supplement and nutrition education program on nutritional status and life style of children. Elementary school students(n=170) aged of 11 years old at Seoul were participated. Subjects were supplemented with iron-enriched cereal for breakfast and provided with 2 sessions of nutrition education during 3 months. Intake of carbohydrate, iron, sodium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin $B_1$, vitamin $B_2$, vitamin C, niacin, and folic acid was significantly increased after cereal supplement. Caloric intake was similar to KDRIs during both before and after cereal supplement. There was no improvement on exercise and dietary habits after nutrition education. Male students tended to sleep later, wake up early, and ate snack less than female. Cereal supplement was effective on improving nutritional status, but short-term nutrition education had no effect on modification of life style. Thus, further studies are required to develop long-term education program effective on improving lift style and eating habits in children.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although previous experimental studies reported the health benefits of foods rich in phytochemicals, few epidemiologic studies have investigated the associations between phytochemicals and metabolic disorders. This study aimed to calculate a phytochemical index (PI) and examine its association with metabolic syndrome in the Korean population. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Data of Korean adults aged ≥ 19 years who participated in the 2008-2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys were analyzed. The PI was calculated using 24-hour intake recall data regarding whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds, and soybeans and soy products. Demographic and lifestyle data were obtained using self-administered questionnaires. A multivariable logistic regression was performed to calculate the adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components according to PI quintiles. RESULTS: Overall, 31,319 adults were evaluated. Compared with men, women had a higher median PI level (9.96 vs. 13.63) and significantly higher caloric intake levels from most PI components (P < 0.05), except for soy products. After adjusting for multiple confounding variables, participants in the highest PI quintile had significantly lower prevalences of abdominal obesity (OR: 0.90, 95% CI: 0.81-0.99), hyperglycemia (OR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.74-0.94), high blood pressure (OR: 0.82, 95% CI: 0.73-0.93), hypertriglyceridemia (OR: 0.84, 95% CI: 0.75-0.94), and metabolic syndrome (OR: 0.78, 95% CI: 0.69-0.88). CONCLUSIONS: Higher intakes of phytochemical-rich foods are associated with a lower prevalence of metabolic dysregulation and consequently, cardiometabolic diseases.
In this work, charcoal making characteristics of Quercus phyllyaeoides (which has been known as one of best raw materials for charcoals) was investigated. Charcoal from Quercus phyllyaeoides had more than 85% of fixed carbon, which is 5~25% higher fixed carbon content than other charcoals. Also specific gravity of this charcoal was more than 1.0, which is quite higher than other black charcoals (average of commercial products: 0.52) or white charcoals (average of commercial products: 0.73). Methylene blue adsorption, pH, and adsorption of water vapour was lower than other commercial charcoals. Carolic value of this charcoal was similar to other commercial products. Far infrared ray's emission from this charcoal was higher than others. Application of charcoal from Quercus phyllyaeoides should be consider the characteristics of this product.
Oil palm trunk (OPT) is a potential source of biomass for the production of biopellet. In the present research, biopellet were prepared from the meristem part of 25 years old OPT with various percentages of its bark (0, 10, and 30%). The highest biopellet durability was found for biopellet produced at $130^{\circ}C$ of pelletizing temperature with 30% bark content. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of biopellet showed the weak of particle bonding due to the low pelletizing pressure. The moisture content, unit density, ash content, and caloric value of OPT-based pellets were 3.55-5.35%, $525.56-855.23kg/m^3$, 2.76-3.44%, and 17.89-19.14 MJ/kg, respectively. The combustion profiles obtained by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) seemed to be unaffected by the bark content on. Differential thermal analysis of TGA curve indicated different pyrolysis characteristic of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin.

For the hydrogen production, Gas Lab and Gnc make alkaline watrer electrolyzer and found optimized condition of experimental parameters of cell material and operating procedures. For the commercial production, we saved electric power consumption and caloric based efficiency with over 70%. Used cell pressures are 10 bar, 30 bar and consumed electricity is $4,000A/m^2$, 4.19 kW ($T=100^{\circ}C$) at 10 bar. Another data is $2,000A/m^2$, 3.92 kW ($T=95^{\circ}C$) at 30 bar. Applied voltage is 1.75 V ($100^{\circ}C$, 10 bar), 1.64 V ($95^{\circ}C$, 10 bar), 1.81 V ($85^{\circ}C$, 30 bar), 1.76 V ($95^{\circ}C$, 30 bar). As cell temperature increase, applied voltage has been decreased and current has been increased. The concentration of KOH solution is 30 weight %.
The effect of dietary lipid factors (plant and animal oil, cholesterol and ${\beta}$-sitosterol) on the liver, serum, and egg yolk cholesterol levels of the laying hen was studied. Single Comb White Leghorn laying hens, at 28 weeks of age, were fed two basal diets containing 8.0% soybean oil or 8.0% fish oil, with or without supplemental cholesterol (1.0%), ${\beta}$-sitosterol (2.0%) or combinations of both. Restricting caloric intake resulted in significantly (p<.05) decreased egg production and the total amount of cholesterol excreted via the egg was significantly (p<.05) different among treatment groups. Cholesterol supplementation to the two basal diets resulted in a significant elevation of liver, serum and egg yolk cholesterol levels. The addition of ${\beta}$-sitosterol lowered the cholesterol levels in liver and serum, while increased in the egg yolk (SO + ST, FO + ST). The anticholesterogenic effect of dietary ${\beta}$-sitosterol was not clearly exhibited in this study.
The 297 middle school girls in Inchon were devided into three groups according to body mass index(BMI), the under weight group, the normal weight group and obese group to find out relationship between their food habits, food preference, and obesity. The average height and weight are 159.40cm, 67.02kg for obese group, 158.17cm, 39.11kg for under weight group, 156.93cm, 53.78kg for normal weight group. Obese group feels that they are healthy and fat, and their parents are fat also than the other groups. Obese group took more exercise. Total Food habits scores of obese group were lower than the other two groups. In terms of supper, bedtime-smack, unbalanced diet, balanced intake of five basic food groups obese group had lower scores. Especially, intake of carbohydrate, protein, milk group were irregular. There is no significant different in size of meal, overeating eating speed. The preferences of fast food, instant food, high caloric density food were lower in obese group than in the other two groups. The mother of obese group prepared meals according to food composition and prepared little snakes.
