Abiotic effects on calling phenology of three frog species in Korea

  • Calling behavior is often used to infer breeding patterns in anurans. We studied the seasonal and diel calling activities of anuran species in a wetland in central Korea to determine the calling season and to evaluate the effects of abiotic factors on male calling. Acoustic monitoring was used in which frog calls were recorded for a full day, once a week, throughout an entire year. Using acoustic monitoring, we identified three frog species in the study site. Males of Rana dybowskii called in late winter and early spring; we thus classified this species as a winter/spring caller. The results of binary logistic regression showed that temperature, relative humidity, and 1-day lag rainfall were significant factors for male calling in R. dybowskii. Temperature and relative humidity were important factors for the calling activity of R. nigromaculata, whereas 24-h rainfall and 1-day lag rainfall were not significant. Thus, we determined R. nigromaculata to be a summer caller independent of weather. In Hyla japonica, relative humidity, 24-h rainfall, and 1- day lag rainfall were significant for male calling, suggesting that this species is a summer caller dependent on local rain.

ChIP-seq Analysis of Histone H3K27ac and H3K27me3 Showing Different Distribution Patterns in Chromatin

  • Histone proteins can be modified by the addition of acetyl group or methyl group to specific amino acids. The modifications have different distribution patterns in chromatin. Recently, histone modifications are studied based on ChIP-seq data, which requires reasonable analysis of sequencing data depending on their distribution patterns. Here we have analyzed histone H3K27ac and H3K27me3 ChIP-seq data and it showed that the H3K27ac is enriched at narrow regions while H3K27me3 distributes broadly. To properly analyze the ChIP-seq data, we called peaks for H3K27ac and H3K27me3 using MACS2 (narrow option and broad option) and SICER methods, and compared propriety of the peaks using signal-to-background ratio. As results, H3K27ac-enriched regions were well identified by both methods while H3K27me3 peaks were properly identified by SICER, which indicates that peak calling method is more critical for histone modifications distributed broadly. When ChIP-seq data were compared in different sequencing depth (15, 30, 60, 120 M), high sequencing depth caused high false-positive rate in H3K27ac peak calling, but it reflected more properly the broad distribution pattern of H3K27me3. These results suggest that sequencing depth affects peak calling from ChIP-seq data and high sequencing depth is required for H3K27me3. Taken together, peak calling tool and sequencing depth should be chosen depending on the distribution pattern of histone modification in ChIP-seq analysis.

Recognition of English Calling Cards by Using Projection Method and Enhanced RBE Network

  • In this paper, we proposed the novel method for the recognition of English calling cards by using the projection method and the enhanced RBF (Radial Basis Function) network. The recognition of calling cards consists of the extraction phase of character areas and the recognition phase of extracted characters. In the extraction phase, first of all, noises are removed from the images of calling cards, and the feature areas including character strings are separated from the calling card images by using the horizontal smearing method and the 8-directional contour tracking method. And using the image projection method, the feature areas are split into the areas of individual characters. We also proposed the enhanced RBF network that organizes the middle layer effectively by using the enhanced ART1 neural network adjusting the vigilance threshold dynamically according to the homogeneity between patterns. In the recognition phase, the proposed neural network is applied to recognize individual characters. Our experiment result showed that the proposed recognition algorithm has higher success rate of recognition and faster learning time than the existing neural network based recognition.

  • Sequential pattern mining that determines frequent patterns appearing in a given set of sequences is an important data mining problem with broad applications. For example, sequential pattern mining can find the web access patterns, customer's purchase patterns and DNA sequences related with specific disease. In this paper, we develop the sequential pattern mining algorithms using MapReduce framework. Our algorithms distribute input data to several machines and find frequent sequential patterns in parallel. With synthetic data sets, we did a comprehensive performance study with varying various parameters. Our experimental results show that linear speed up can be achieved through our algorithms with increasing the number of used machines.

  • Shipping and ports have important roles as the nodes and links in maritime logistics. The environment between shipping and ports is interrelated and has been changing' together. Recently, the changes of shipping and ports are rapidly in progress and it is expected to be developed complementarily. Especially, mega carriers reduce the number of ports of calls because the size of ships is becoming bigger and bigger and the 'hub and spokes' strategy is appeared. Therefore, the position of a hub port by the region has questioned This paper aims to research the competitive ports by the region on the basis of the patterns when mega carriers call at ports. Six regions, Far East, Southeast Asia, Northwest America, Northeast America, West Europe and Mediterranean, are organized for this research. According to the volume of cargoes, the top five ports of each region are analyzed. As a result, the competitive ports by the region are Shanghai, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, New York New Jersey, Rotterdam and Gioia Tauro.

Colonization and Extinction Patterns of a Metapopulation of Gold-spotted Pond Frogs, Rana plancyi chosenica

  • We investigated colonization and extinction patterns in a meta population of the gold-spotted pond frog (Rana planeyi ehoseniea) near the Korea National University of Education, Chungbuk, Korea, by surveying the frogs in the nine occupied habitat patches in the study area four times per breeding season for three years (2006$\sim$2008) and recording whether the patches were occupied by frogs as well as how many frogs were calling in the patches. We then developed five a priori year-specific models using the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). The models predicted that: 1) probabilities of colonization and local extinction of the frogs were better explained by year-dependent models than by constant models, 2) there are high local extinction and low colonization probabilities, 3) approximately 31% number of patches will be occupied at equilibrium, and 4) that considerable variation in occupation rate should occur over a 30-year period, due to demographic stochasticity (in our model, the occupation rate ranged from 0.222 to 0.889). Our results suggest that colonization is important in this metapopulation system, which is governed by mainly stochastic components, and that more constructive conservation effects are needed to increase local colonization rates.

The Call Patterns and the Change of Calls by Water Temperature in Rana plancyi (Amphibia, Anura) (금개구리(Rana plancyi)의 소리 유형과 수온에 따른 소리변화)

  • The study of the Rana plancyi, was done during the calling period at a pond in Osong, Chungbuk, Korea from May to the middle of August of 1996 and 1997. Five basic types of call-A, B, C, D, E, - were identified in Rana plancyi according to the structure of call types. The structure of A type call has only one pulse, B type call has two pulses and C, D type call has one separated pulse which is called introductory call and pulse group as follow it. On the other hand, E type call has 3-6 separate pulses. The interval between introductory call and pulse group is $0.73{\pm}0.29$ s(n=159) in C type call and $0.60{\pm}0.21$ s (n=48) in D type call. The number of pulses in the pulse group is $30.08{\pm}8.69$ in C type call and $15.78{\pm}2.40$ in D type call. An increase in water temperature induces a decrease in C and D type call duration (C type call r= -0.4153, p<0.001, D type call r=-0.7064, p<0.001). In case of C and D type call, the interval between introductory call and pulse group influenced more call duration than pulse group duration. We regarded A, B type call as a territorial call and C, D type call as a mating call and we recognized that E type call has the function of threat or alarm.

A Development of Multi-Emotional Signal Receiving Modules for Cellphone Using Robotic Interaction

  • CP (Cellular Phone) is currently one of the most attractive technologies and RT (Robot Technology) is also considered as one of the most promising next generation technology. We present a new technological concept named RCP (Robotic Cellular Phone), which combines RT and CP. RCP consists of 3 sub-modules, $RCP^{Mobility}$, $RCP^{Interaction}$, and $RCP^{Integration}$. $RCP^{Interaction}$ is the main focus of this paper. It is an interactive emotion system which provides CP with multi-emotional signal receiving functionalities. $RCP^{Interaction}$ is linked with communication functions of CP in order to interface between CP and user through a variety of emotional models. It is divided into a tactile, an olfactory and a visual mode. The tactile signal receiving module is designed by patterns and beat frequencies which are made by mechanical-vibration conversion of the musical melody, rhythm and harmony. The olfactory signal receiving module is designed by switching control of perfume-injection nozzles which are able to give the signal receiving to the CP-called user through a special kind of smell according to the CP-calling user. The visual signal receiving module is made by motion control of DC-motored wheel-based system which can inform the CP-called user of the signal receiving through a desired motion according to the CP-calling user. In this paper, a prototype system is developed for multi-emotional signal receiving modes of CP. We describe an overall structure of the system and provide experimental results of the functional modules.
