  • In this study, we developed a dispersion analysis program of the gas-generator cycle liquid propellant rocket engine by expanding the mode analysis software(GEMAT). The performance dispersions of an engine that are arisen from the internal dispersion factors of engine's sub-components were formulated and solved to find the effects of each dispersion factor. We were also able to present the calculation method to find the required pressure margin for the compensation of those dispersion to satisfy the required performances of engine. Using this method, we could propose a novel procedure of compensating during the ground firing test which would induce the performance improvement by lessening the pumps discharge pressures or augmenting the combustion chamber pressure.

  • In this study, a Jeju sand, which contains both siliceous and calcareous materials, was sampled from a beach in Jeju Island. It is observed that the Jeju sand has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles. From cone penetration test using calibration chamber system, it is found that the cone tip resistance($q_c$)-relative density(Dr)-vertical effective stress(${\sigma_v}'$) relation of Jeju sand almost matches to that of high compressible quartz sand. However, this correlation overestimates the relative density of a coastal sediments in Jeju Island maybe due to the cementation effect of this area. From analysis of the results of cone penetration and SPS tests at a coastal area in Jeju Island, it seems reasonable to assume that the coast of Jeju Island is a natural cemented sediments.

  • In this paper, we designed 4-channel electrolyte analyzer that can measure simultaneousely the 4 electrolytes - pH, $pNa^{+}$, $pCa^{2+}$, and $pK^{+}-$ using 2-point calibration and implemented it. Developed electrolyte analyzer consists of singal processing part, actuator part and control unit for sample flow system. To implement reliable instrument, design considerations are emphasized on flow system and sample chamber that requires small sample volume and prevent air contact with sample solution. In addition to the hardware design, we developed system software which controls full measuring process. After system developed, we verified the system performance by the test measurement for pH, $pNa^{+}$, $pCa^{2+}$, and $pK^{+}$ value.

  • In order to investigate the effect of the pile shape on the bearing capacity of non-displacement piles, a series of model pile load tests were performed using a calibration chamber and three model piles with different shape. Results of the model tests showed that the bearing capacity of tapered piles was affected by its taper angle as well as the stress states and relative density of soil. Based on the results of model pile load tests, a new design equation for estimation of the bearing capacity of non-displacement piles was proposed, and it takes into account the effect of the taper angles on the bearing capacity of non-displacement piles.

  • As the wafer geometric requirements continuously complicated and minutes in tens of nanometers, the expectation of real-time add-on sensors for in-situ plasma process monitoring is rapidly increasing. Various industry applications, utilizing plasma impedance monitor (PIM) and optical emission spectroscopy (OES), on etch end point detection, etch chemistry investigation, health monitoring, fault detection and classification, and advanced process control are good examples. However, process monitoring in semiconductor manufacturing industry requires non-invasiveness. The hypothesis behind the optical monitoring of plasma induced ion current is for the monitoring of plasma induced charging damage in non-invasive optical way. In plasma dielectric via etching, the bombardment of reactive ions on exposed conductor patterns may induce electrical current. Induced electrical charge can further flow down to device level, and accumulated charges in the consecutive plasma processes during back-end metallization can create plasma induced charging damage to shift the threshold voltage of device. As a preliminary research for the hypothesis, we performed two phases experiment to measure the plasma induced current in etch environmental condition. We fabricated electrical test circuits to convert induced current to flickering frequency of LED output, and the flickering frequency was measured by high speed optical plasma monitoring system (OPMS) in 10 kHz. Current-frequency calibration was done in offline by applying stepwise current increase while LED flickering was measured. Once the performance of the test circuits was evaluated, a metal pad for collecting ion bombardment during plasma etch condition was placed inside etch chamber, and the LED output frequency was measured in real-time. It was successful to acquire high speed optical emission data acquisition in 10 kHz. Offline measurement with the test circuitry was satisfactory, and we are continuously investigating the potential of real-time in-situ plasma induce current measurement via OPMS.

  • Most of the soil used for reclamation is marine clay generated from dredging construction. The soft ground made of dredged clay has high water content and high compressibility, so the bearing capacity of the ground is very weak and it is difficult to enter the ground improvement equipment. Therefore, surface hardening treatment method is used to enter equipment prior to full-scale civil engineering work, and stabilizer is mainly used for cement series. Cement-based stabilizers have the advantage of improving the ground in a short period of time and have excellent economic efficiency, but they are disadvantageous in that they cause environmental problems due to leaching of heavy metals such as hexavalent chromium. In this study, environmental effects evaluation of dredged clay mixed with normal portland cement and environmentally friendly stabilizer was evaluated, and uniaxial compressive strength test and indoor model test were conducted to confirm the bearing capacity characteristics of the solidified layer.

  • Hydrogen penetration into a metal leads to damages and mechanical degradations and its content measurement is of importance. For a precise measurement, a sample preparation procedure must be optimized through a series of studies on sample washing and drying. In this study, two-step washing with organic solvents and thermal soaking in inert gas were tried with a rod-shaped, API X65 steel sample. The samples were machined from a steel plate and then washed in acetone and etyl-alcohol for 5 minute each and dried with compressed air. After then, the samples were thermally soaked in a home-made nitrogen gas chamber during 10 minute at different heat gun temperatures from 100 to $400^{\circ}C$ and corresponding temperature range in the soaking chamber was from 77 to $266^{\circ}C$ according to the temperature calibration. Hydrogen residue in the samples was measured with a hot extraction system after each soaking step; hydrogen residue of $0.70{\pm}0.12$ wppm after the thermal soaking at $77^{\circ}C$ decayed with increase of the soaking temperature. By adopting the heat transfer model, decay behavior of the hydrogen residue was fitted into an exponential decay function of the soaking temperature. Saturated value or lower bound of the hydrogen residue was 0.36 wppm and chamber temperature required to lower the hydrogen residue about 95% of the lower bound was $360^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, a thermal desorption spectroscopy was done for the fully soaked samples at $360^{\circ}C$. Weak hydrogen peak was observed for whole temperature range and it means that hydrogen-related contaminants of the sample surface are steadily removed by heating. In addition, a broad peak found around $400^{\circ}C$ means that parts of the hydrogen residue are irreversibly trapped in the steel microstructure.

  • In this study, the variation in excess pore pressure during dissipation is estimated by using successive cavity expansion theory and finite difference technique based on axisymmetric uncoupled linear consolidation theory with separate consideration of magnitude and initial distribution $\Delta{u}_{oct}$induced by changes of octahedral normal stress, and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$ induced by changes of octahedral shear stress. The coefficient of consolidation is also estimated by trial and error procedure until the predicted dissipation curve matches the measured curve at a typical degree of dissipation. The proposed method is applied to the results of miniature piezocone tests at Louisiana State University calibration chamber system. Based on the results of interpretation and the comparison with experimental measurements and those from other solutions, the prediction dissipation curves show a good match with those measured during dissipation tests and the values of coefficient of consolidation estimated by proposed method are more close to the range of laboratory measurements than those of other theories.

  • Recently, pressure grouting is widely being used in construction site for strength improvement of ground and water proof, reinforcement and so on. It is necessarily required to estimate an appropriate injection pressure and injection time for economical and reasonable construction in the site through the size and shape of the hardened grout measured according to ground condition. However, sampling for the hardened grout is time-consuming and needs high cost on preliminary test in the site. The system which could predict the size and shape of the hardened grout does not exist until now. Thus, numerical method based on VOF method and porous model was used for the calibration chamber injection test with injection pressure (50 kPa, 100 kPa, 150 kPa) in this study. The results indicate that the numerical technique based on VOF method and porous model among CFD analysis is expected to be a basic study for the prediction of the behavior and solidification of pressure grouting.

  • Calibration chamber tests were conducted on open -ended model piles driven into dried siliceous sands with different soil conditions in order to clarify the effect of soil conditions on plug capacity, The model pile used in the test series was devised so that the bearing capacity of an open -ended pile could be measured out into three components , outside shaft resistance. plug resistance and tip resistance. Under several assumption, the value of earth pressure coefficient in the soil plug is calculated. It is gradually reduced with increase in the longitudinal distance from the pile tip. At the bottom of soil plug, it tends to decrease with increase in the penetration depth and relative density, and to increase with the increase of ambient pressure. In comparison of measured and calculated plug capacities using the one -dimensional analysis, we note that API code and one -dimensional analysis combined with P suggested by Randolph et al. and O'Neill et al. result in great underestimation of the plug capacity. Therefore, based on the test results, an empirical equation was suggested to compute the earth pressured coefficient to be used in the calculation of plug capacity using the one -dimensional analysis. and it produces proper plug capacities for all soil conditions.
