A method is described for the analysis of short-chain alkylphenol ethoxylates (APEOs), 4-octylphenol-di-ethoxylate (OP2EO) and 4-nonylphenol-di-ethoxylate (NP2EO), in drinking water or wastewater using reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The solvent system was water and methanol containing $10{\mu}M$ trifluoroacetic acid as an ionization solvent. We acidified 1 L of water samples to less than pH 2 with concentrated $H_2SO_4$ and loaded onto Sep-Pak $C_{18}$, and eluted with acetone. The calibration of OP2EO and NP2EO was performed for the concentration range from 20 to 500 ng/L and the correlation coefficients were 0.999 and 0.990, respectively. The limits of detection were 20 ng/L (OP2EO) and 50 ng/L (NP2EO) at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Accuracy and precision of this analytical method were 85.8 ~ 122.1% and 8.2 ~ 18.8%, respectively. The proposed method allowed a sensitive and rapid detection of OP2EO and NP2EO and it could be applied for monitoring of APEOs from environmental samples.
A selective method for the determination of iron(III) ion with a sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) modified glassy carbon electrode was proposed. It was based on the electrostatic attraction and complexation of the SDS modifier, $(DS^-)_n-Fe^{3+}$. The determination of iron(III) ion was performed by a differential pulse voltammetry(DPV), and the reduction peak potential of $(DS^-)_n-Fe^{3+}$ was +0.466(${\pm}0.002$)V vs. Ag/AgCl. For the determination of iron(III) ion, a linear calibration curve was obtained within the iron(III) ion concentration range of $0.50{\times}10^{-5}{\sim}10{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$, and the detection limit was $0.14{\times}10^{-5}mol/L$. $Cu^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, and $Mn^{2+}$ showed little or no effect on the determination of iron(III) ion, respectively. But, ion such as each $CN^- $ and $SCN^-$ interfered seriously.
We have developed analysis method of PFCs in river water and sediment, and determined seven species of PFCs such as PFBS, PFHxS, PFOS, PFHpA, PFOA, PFNA and PFDA. Water and sediment samples were collected from 21 and 13 different sites along the Nakdong, Seomjin and Nam River, respectively. The water samples were pretreated with HLB cartridge and sediment samples were concentrated after extracted by sonication, and the levels of PFCs were determined by LC-MS/MS. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) values of calibration curves were higher than 0.99. The method detection limits ranged 0.09~0.63 ng/L in water and 0.013~0.020 ng/g in sediment. The recovery rates of PFCs was found to be 74~98% for water and 87~111% for sediment. PFOA was the major species in water samples and followed by PFHpA and PFOS. In sediment, PFOA, PFOS and PFDA showed similar levels. Both water and sediment samples collected from the Nakdong River showed the highest concentrations of PFCs among the three rivers.

Twenty-two allergy-induced aromatics in children were analyzed using a gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MSD). Analytes were extracted using an automatic Soxhlet extractor and centrifuged for 10 min in a fast freezing centrifuge, and the supernatant was transferred into a 2 mL vial and injected in split mode. Under the established conditions, the calibration curve showed linearity with a correlation coefficient of 0.996 or more. A wide range of sensitivity of 6.7 to 1,859,839 depending on the device characteristics and detector used was shown. The detection limit of the device was 0.0032 to $0.0335{\mu}g/mL$, and the maximum detection limit was less than $0.1{\mu}g/mL$. The detection limit of the method ranged from 0.0033 to $0.1161{\mu}g/mL$. In addition, the limit of quantification ranged from 0.0100 to $0.5422{\mu}g/mL$, with a level of precision ranging from 0.21 % to 4.89 % and a degree of accuracy ranging from 89 % to 111 %. The analytical method developed in this study was applied to commercial products.
Carbaryl and seven organophosphorous pesticides were analyzed simultaneously using on-line solid phase extraction (on-line SPE) coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). The target pesticides are Carbaryl, Methyl demeton, Fenitrothion, Malathion, Parathion, Phenthoate, Diazinon, and EPN. This method includes the direct injection of $500{\mu}L$ in the water sample, a 15 min separation period using a rapid resolution liquid chromatography system with on-line SPE, and detection through electrospray ionization (ESI) positive mode. The percentage of recovery of all pesticides ranged from 85.3 % to 100 %. This method showed an accuracy of ${\geq}90.0%$, possessing limits of detection and quantification within 0.05 to $0.28{\mu}g/L$ and 0.16 to $0.89{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The correlation coefficients (r) for the calibration curves within a range of 0.5 to $8.0{\mu}g/L$ were higher than 0.99. The evaluation results showed the efficacy of the method for all contents, and no pesticides were detected in the water quality sample.
In order to elucidate the influence of intestinal and hepatic first-pass effect on the pharmacokinetics of triflusal, the biotransformation of triflusal in the gastrointestinal tract and liver was designed. Moreover, we tried to establish an HPLC method applicable for bioassay and available to pharmacokinetics, not only with the simultaneous determination of triflusal and its active metabolite, 2-hydroxy-4-trifluoromethyl benzoic acid (HTB), but also with improving sensitivity. After the administration of triflusal (10 mg/kg) and HTB (10 mg/kg) into femoral vein, portal vein (only triflusal) and oral route (only triflusal), pharmacokinetic parameters were investigated from the plasma concentration-time profiles of triflusal and HTB in rats. An HPLC method was developed for the simultaneous determination of triflusal and HTB in rat plasma, urine and bile. The HPLC analysis was carried out using a C18 column and acetonitrile-methanol-water (25:10:65, v/v/v) as the mobile phase and UV detection at 234 nm. Furosemide was used as the internal standard. The calibration curves were linear over the concentration range $0.05-5.0\;{\mu}g/ml$ for triflusal and $0.2-200.0\;{\mu}g/ml$ for HTB with correlation coefficients greater than 0.999 and with intra-day or inter-day coefficients of variation not exceeding 10.0%. This assay procedure was applied to the study of metabolite pharmacokinetics of triflusal and HTB in rats. It was supposed that triflusal was almost metabolized in vivo because urinary and biliary excreted amounts of triflusal could be ignored as it was lower than 1.2% of the administered dose. According to the gastrointestinal and hepatic biotransformation pathways of triflusal, it was found that triflusal was hydrolyzed by about 5% in intestine and metabolized by about 53% in liver, and that the bioavailability of triflusal after oral administration of triflusal was 0.44, and also that the fraction of total elimination rate of triflusal which formed HTB in liver $(F_{mi},\;%)$ was about 98%. These results showed that triflusal was almost metabolized in liver, and the total elimination of triflusal in the body was dependent to the formation rate of HTB from triflusal in liver.
A rapid and sensitive reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method was developed for the determination of N-(-4-Chlorophenyl)-6-hydroxy-7-methoxy-2-chromanecarboxamide (KAL-1120), a novel anti-inflammation agent, in the rat plasma. The method was applied to analyze the compound in the biological fluids such as bile, urine and tissue homogenates. After liquid-liquid extraction, the compound was analyzed on an HPLC system with ultraviolet detection at 275 nm. HPLC was carried out using reversed-phase isocratic elution with a $C_{18}$ column, a mobile phase of a mixture of acetonitril (40 v/v%) at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The chromatograms showed good resolution and sensitivity and no interference of plasma. The calibration curve for the drug in plasma was linear over the concentration range of 0.05-50 ${\mu}g$/mL. The intra- and inter-day assay accuracies of this method ranged from 0.06% to 9.33% of normal values and the precision did not exceed 6.28% of relative standard deviation. The plasma concentration of KAL-1120 decreased to below the quantifiable limit at 1.5 hr after the i.v. bolus administration of 2-10 mg/kg to rats ($t_{1/2,({\alpha})}$ and $t_{1/2,({\beta})$ of 2.15 and 26.7 min at a dose of 2 mg/kg, 3.91 and 33.0 min at a dose of 10 mg/kg, respectively). The steady-state volume of distribution ($V_{dss}$) and the total body clearance ($CL_t$) were not significantly altered in rats given doses from 2 to 10 mg/kg. Of the various tissues tested, KAL-1120 was mainly distributed in the lung and heart after i.v. bolus administration. KAL-1120 was detected in the bile by 30 min after its i.v. bolus administration. However, the concentration in the urine after i.v. bolus administration became too low to measure, suggesting that KAL-1120 is mostly excreted in the bile. In conclusion, this analytical method was suitable for the preclinical pharmacokinetic studies of KAL-1120 in rats.

In recent years, strong typhoons have passed South Korea almost every year and severe damages were incurred directly and indirectly. However, instances where wave and wind data were procured from the offshore approach path of the typhoon are very rare and thus researchers are experiencing difficulties in obtaining calibration and verification data of typhoon-generated wave modeling. This paper provides a synthesis of records of observations by the Korea Meteorological Administration and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology on storm waves generated by the typhoons SONGDA, NABI, and SHANSHAN that passed from 2004 to 2006 in order to help researchers interested in typhoon-generated wave numerical modeling. Although the trajectories of typhoon NABI and SHANSHAN were east of the Korea Strait, a significant wave height of 8.3 m was measured at Namhyeongjedo located east of Geojedo. Moreover, an unprecedented significant wave height of 12.2 m was measured for both typhoons at a station 1.4 km away from Yeongil Bay breakwater. Meanwhile, a comparative analysis of data obtained with a ocean data buoy at Geojedo and a Directional Waverider at Namhyeongjedo showed maximum wave heights that were similar but considerably different significant wave heights.

BACKGROUND: The phenol concentrations in water samples were determined using gas chromatography after derivatization of the analyte to phenyl acetate followed by extraction using a large volume of solvent. However, this procedure requires an additional purification step and is not analytically efficient. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, phenol was first extracted from an acidified water sample using ethyl acetate and then acetylated using acetic anhydride in the presence of a small amount of water and $K_2CO_3$. The derivative was extracted using 1mL of n-butyl acetate. One microliter of the extract was analyzed by GC-MS without further purification. The calibration curve showed good linearity with the $r^2$ value of 0.9968. The method detection limit and the limit of quantitation were estimated to be $0.18{\mu}g/L$ and $0.56{\mu}g/L$, respectively. Repeatability (RSD, n=3) and recovery (n=3) were 9.1%-4.3% and 90.6%-110.5%, respectively. The concentrations of phenol in a few samples of stream water were distributed in the range of $2.51-7.51{\mu}g/L$. CONCLUSION: This method is simpler and faster to implement than those currently utilized and shows high analytical reliability. It can be applied to the quantitative determination of phenol concentrations in surface water and groundwater samples.
