  • The ritual for community is a group ritual performed by the regional community of a village for the safety of the residents and abundant harvests. However, many ritual places have been destroyed by the anti-superstition movement, New Community Movement (Saemaul Movement), industrialization and urbanization since the 1960s. Under the circumstances, this study researched the status of use of the ritual place in Beommul-dong in Daegu where the ritual was revived in 2004 after having been suspended since the end of the 1980s due to urbanization. The revival of the ritual for community in Beommul-dong in Daegu, which had been maintained by the village people alone, is the prime example of the vitalization of local community as the recreation of local community, since the ritual has been transformed into a kind of festival involved with and financed by the local government. The study on analyzing the usage pattern of the ritual place may provide useful sources to come up with the modernized functions of the ritual place as a community place, where the heads of the ward office and cultural center, lawmakers and most of the residents perform the ritual, share foods and tread on the God of the Earth across the village at 11:30 in the morning on every January 16 of the lunar calendar.

  • This paper describes the types of models that biology majors use and how they go about making their models in learning key concepts in biology such as the cell membrane, cytoskeleton and cell structure. Initially, a total of 44 biology students from all year levels enrolled in the second semester of calendar year 2008-2009 were asked to make their respective models of the cell membrane, cytoskeleton and cell structure. They were also asked to answer an open-ended questionnaire. Of the 44, only 20 (five from each year level) were randomly selected for a one-on-one interview. Results showed that the student-generated models from all year levels were mostly analogies, some textbook definitions and occasional drawings. In making their model, students first read the text; second, outline similarities in structure and function or both; and third, make the model. Data suggest that models are good diagnostic tools for identifying critical thinking skills of students. In this case, students mostly demonstrate the ability to recognize similarities in structure and function between the concept and their model. Some senior students demonstrated integration and reflective thinking in making their models. Thus, more opportunities for student-generated models must be available if students were to develop integration and reflective thinking in their models.

  • Ten days and monthly mean temperatures were analysed daily data observed during July, 1916 to March, 1970 statistically. Periodic characters were calculated by Δn, new method of approximate solution of Schuster Method. According to ten days mean temperatures, annual variation function is F($\theta_d$)=16.29-5.27 cos $\theta_d$+0.75 cos2 $\theta_d$-3.14 sin $\theta_d$+1.16 sin2 $\theta_d$-0.63 sin $\3{theta}_d$, where $\theta_d$=$-\frac{\pi}{18}$(d-3), d is the order of ten days period, 1 to 36. Annual mean water temperature is 16.3$^{\circ}C$, minimum in the last ten days of February 10.9$^{\circ}C$, maximum in the last ten days of August 24.5$^{\circ}C$. Periodic character of secular variation shows 11 year and its curve is F($\theta_y$)=16.29+0.53 cos $\theta_y$ -0.16cos $2{\theta}_y$+0.10 cos$3{\theta}_y$-0.10 sin $\theta_y$, where $\theta_y$=2$-\frac{2\pi}{11}$(y-1920), y is calendar year. And the relation between air temperature x and water temprature y is following. y=9.67 1.035$\^x$

  • Albeit numerous endeavors in matching names and surveying inventors, inventor-level studies of patent data have been scarce because unique inventors can not be identified across patents. Using the Korean patent data with inventor IDs, birth year, and gender available, we construct unique inventor-level panel data. As the first undertaking with our data, we investigate the age profile of patent productivity among inventors. We find an inverted U-shaped profile with the peak at age 31. We also find an increasing productivity for younger cohorts of inventors. These findings are robust after we control for the calendar year effects and the quality of patents.

  • As a multidisciplinary study encompassing oceanography and history, we have attempted to reanalyze the course of a historical navel battle, Myungryang Naval Battle(September 16th, 1597 according to the lunar calendar) through hindcasting the paleo-tidal currents and -tides(PTC). Firstly, we conducted harmonic analysis using 6-month current data observed at Uldolmok and 1-year elevation data provided by Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute in order to understand their characteristics and to hindcast the PTC. Observation results show that Uldolmok, ~300m wide, relatively narrow channel, is characterized by a flood-dominant mixed mainly semidiurnal tidal regime induced by relatively-strong shallow water constituents, showing closely a standing wave type of tidal current. Further, we hindcasted PTC on the day of Myungryang Naval Battle. Our results were compared and discussed with results(time and speeds of maximum(flood and ebb) currents and high and low water times) of the previous studies estimated from different methods. Lastly, we reconstruct the course of the event of Myungryang Naval Battle recorded in the Admiral Sun-Sin Yi's War Diary(Nangjung Iigi in Korean) based on our hindcasting results.

  • This paper studies the behaviour of stock prices on the ex-dividend day in the Korean stock market. Since a majority of listed Korean firms are December firms whose fiscal year end in December and whose ex-dividend day falls on the same calendar day in the year, we use stock prices of Non-December firms to estimate the general stock price movements not related to cash dividends. We estimate excess returns on days around the ex-dividend day. Our major findings are (a) there is no tax clientele effect in Korea, (b) the opening price stock prices fell by the amount of the current cash dividend per share until 2001, but it does not fall as much as the current dividend per share since 2001. Furthermore, in contrast to the U.S. and the Japanese findings, (c) stocks earned negative excess returns on the ex-dividend day until 2001, after which all stocks are earning positive excess returns on the ex-dividend day, and (d) the closing stock price on the ex-dividend day that used to be even higher than the cum-dividend price until 2001 is lower than the opening stock price since 2001. The evidence suggests a structural break has happened around the year 2001.

  • Primary screening test for serum HBsAg by RPHA from 4,805 persons who were clinically well through preemployment examination for the period of one calendar year of 1983 revealed 476 (9.9%) positive individual carriers. There were no significant differences in distribution of positives of serum HBsAg by age group, profession, or province area. Among positives of serum HBsAg, 356 (74.8%) showed normal findings and 120 (25.2%) showed abnormal findings in liver function test, respectively. Radioimmunoassay was done in 169 positives of HBsAg and RIA detected 10 negative persons who were positive by RPHA revealing 5.9% of false positive rate and 94.1% of sensitivity of RPHA. In RIA profile of HBV markers, pattern I (HBsAg+, Anti-HBe+) was 46.6%, pattern II (HBsAg+, HBeAg+) was 33.3%, pattern III (HBsAg+only) was 18.3%, pattern IV (HBsAg+, HBeAg+, Anti-HBs+) was 1.3%, pattern V (HBsAg+, HBeAg+, Anti-HBe+) was 0.6%, respectively. There were no positives of HBsAg among 10 persons who were negatives of HBsAg by RIA.

  • After disastrous foreign invasions in 1592 and 1636, Chosun lost most of the traditional mathematical works and needed to revive its mathematics. The new calendar system, ShiXianLi(時憲曆, 1645), was brought into Chosun in the same year. In order to understand the system, Chosun imported books related to western mathematics. For the traditional mathematics, Kim Si Jin(金始振, 1618-1667) republished SuanXue QiMeng(算學啓蒙, 1299) in 1660. We discuss the works by two great mathematicians of early 18th century, Cho Tae Gu(趙泰耉, 1660-1723) and Hong Jung Ha(洪正夏, 1684-?) and then conclude that Cho's JuSeoGwanGyun(籌 書管見) and Hong's GuIlJib(九一集) became a real breakthrough for the second half of the history of Chosun mathematics.
