  • Background: Bovine pericardium treated with glutaraldehyde(GA) is one of the most popular prosthetic materials. However, its late calcific degeneration after implantation results in early failure of the prosthesis. Therefore, we investigated the effects of combined treatment with sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and glutamate on calcific degeneration of GA treated bovine pericardium. Material and Method: Sixty square-shaped pieces of bovine pericardia were fixed in 0.625% GA solution with 4g/L MgCl2.6H2O as a control group (group 1). Sixty pieces pretreated with 1% SDS (group 2) and sixty pieces posttreated with 8% glutamate (group 3) were also fixed in the same GA solution. Sixty pieces pretreated with 1% SDS and posttrated with 8% glutamate were also fixed in the same GA solution (group 4). After 1 month of fixation, the pieces were implanted into the belly of sixty Sprague-Dawley rat subdermally and were extracted 1 month, 2 months and 3 months after the implantation. With an atomic absorption spectrophotometry, we measured the calcium amount deposited. Result: The calcium deposition in 1 month was 2.01$\pm$0.13 mg/g in group 1, 1.45$\pm$0.31 mg/g in group 2, 2.49$\pm$0.15 mg/g in group 3 and 0.75$\pm$0.27 mg/g in group 4. In 2 months, it was 3.57$\pm$0.15 mg/g in group 1, 0.98$\pm$0.30 mg/g in group 2, 3.46$\pm$0.12 mg/g in group 3, and 1.48$\pm$0.39 mg/g in group 4, and 5.45$\pm$0.42 mg/g in group 1, 2.43$\pm$0.53 mg/g in group 2, 4.20$\pm$0.55 mg/g in group 3, and 1.02$\pm$0.27 mg/g in group 4 in 3 months. The calcium depositions in group 2 and 4 were less than those of group 1 and 3 in 1 month 2, months, and 3 months(p<0.01). The calcium depositions in group 1, 2 and 3 increased with time. However, they remained unchanged in group 4, which was statistically significant(p<0.01). Conclusion: Pretreatment with SDS is effective in reducing calcification of GA treated bovine pericardium, and the combined method of pretreatment with SDS and posttreatment with glutamate was more effective than the other methods.

  • Fluorine compounds are the essential chemicals for wet processes of semiconductor and LCD production line. Problems of conventional treatments for fluoride wastewater are their high operation costs and low fluoride removal capacity. In this study, cement paste containing various Ca-bearing hydrates such as portlandite, calcium silicate hydrate(CSH), and ettringite was investigated for fluoride removal. The objectives of this study are to assess the feasibility of using cement paste cured mixture of cement and water as an alternative agent for treatment of fluoride wastewater and to investigate fluoride removal capacity of the cement paste. The performance of cement paste was comparable to that of lime in the kinetic test. In column experiment where the effluent fluoride concentrations were below 0.5 mg/L. Then the leached calcium reached the maximum level of 800 mg/L. The nitrate reduced to the level of less than 10 mg/L. Nitrate in the wastewater was exchanged with interlayer sulfate of these cement hydrate LDHs. Phosphate concentration could be reduced to 10 mg/L by forming calcium phosphate. These results indicate that the cement paste generally has advantageous characteristics as an economical and viable substitute for lime to remove fluoride.

  • Allomatrix (Wright Medical Tech, Inc., Arlington, Tenn, USA), is a newly designed, injectable putty with a reliable demineralized bone matrix (DBM), derived from human bone. The compound contains 86% DBM and other bone growth factors such as bone morphogenic protein (BMP)-2, BMP-4, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-${\beta}1$. It has excellent osteoinduction abilities. In addition, DBM is known to have osteoconduction capacity as a scaffold due to its collagen matrix. This product contains a powder, which is a mix of DBM and surgical grade calcium sulfate as a carrier. A practitioner can blend the powder with calcium sulfate solution, making a putty-type material which has the advantages of ease of handling, better fixation, and no need for a membrane, because it can function as membrane itself. This study reports the clinical and radiographic results of various guided bone regeneration cases using Allomatrix, demonstrating its strong potential as a graft material.

  • It is well known that the salt in stoneworks impact on damage of stone by various methods. Various kind of salt is detected in high content in the black surface layer of stone monuments and it is required about origin and roles of salts on blackening to considerate. In this study have been investigated the characteristics of salt in the black crust of sandstone and limestone which used in historical monuments in Berlin, Germany. Salt was analyzed for cation by Atomic Absorption and Atomic Emission Spectroscopy and for anion by ion Chromatograph. The representative ions are $Ca^{2+}\;and\;SO_4^{-2}$ in all samples and the most obvious combinations was proved in calcium sulfate by statistical methods. Because gypsum was detected by X-ray diffraction analyses in the black crusts, this calcium sulfate was confirmed by 2 hydrate type. The probable origin of Ca is air particle in atmosphere around sandstone and calcite in mother rock in limestone, and that of S is polluted air and mortar which used as conservation works.

  • In this study, we investigated the possible use of a new inorganic material as alternative filler in the paper industry. The inorganic material is a mineral composed of calcium sulfate, that is generated when manufacturing phosphate fertilizer. The inorganic material was dehydrated by the thermal treatment to $200^{\circ}C$, $500^{\circ}C$, $700^{\circ}C$, and $900^{\circ}C$ to prepare white filler powders. Their basic properties, including color, particle shape, elements, and average particle size were identified. To determine the effect of new inorganic filler on paper's physical properties and strength, handsheets were prepared from HwBKP, SwBKP, and thermal treated inorganic fillers. Handsheets' ISO brightness, opacity, bulk, breaking length, and stiffness were measured. Results confirmed that thermal treated inorganic filler could be beneficial to the bulk and opacity of paper while maintaining higher level of breaking length and stiffness that is achieved using talc.

  • Nowadays, antiwashout underwater concrete is widely used for constructing underwater concrete structures but they, especially placed in marine environment, can be easily attacked by chemical ions such as SO$\^$2-/$\_$4/ Cl$\^$-/ and Mg$\^$2+/, so the quality and capability of concrete structures go down. In this paper, to solve and improve those matters, flyash and GGBFS(ground granulated blast furnace slag) were used as partial replacements for ordinary portland cement. As results of experiments for fundamental properties of antiwashout underwater concrete containing 10, 20, 30% of flyash and 40, 50, 60 % of GGBFS respectively, setting time, air contents, suspended solids and pH value were satisfied with the "Standard Specification of Antiwashout Admixtures for Concrete" prescribed by KSCE, and also slump flow, efflux time and elevation of head were more improved than that of control concrete. From the compressive strength test, it was revealed that the antiwashout underwater concrete containing mineral admixtures(flyash and GGBFS) is more effective for long term compressive strength than control concrete. An attempt to know how durable when they are under chemical attack has also been done by immersing in chemical solutions that were x2 artificial seawater, 5 % sulphuric acid solution, 10%, sodium sulfate solution and 10% calcium chloride solution. After immersion test for 91days, XRD analysis was carried out to investigate the reactants between cement hydrates and chemical ions and some crystalline such as gypsum ettringite and Fridel′s salt were confirmed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of the natural coral(NC) and the hydroxyapatite/calcium sulfate hemihydrate(HA/CS) on an early stages of wound healing in the rat periodontal fenestration defects. In this experiment, twelve male rats(Mean : 520g in BW) aged 8 to 9 months were used. Experimental periodontal fenestration defects were surgically created with tapered fissure bur at the buccal surface of the left mandibular 1st, 2nd molars. The buccal aspects of molar roots were carefully denuded of their periodontal ligament through a bony window created in the left mandibles of rats under general anesthesia. Each experimental periodontal fenestration defect was grafted with natural coral and HA/CS, randomly. An area without bone graft was assigned for negative control group. At 10,35 days, rats were serially sacrificed via intracardiac perfusion with 2.5% glutaraldehyde and specimens were processed with Hematoxylin-Eosin stain for light microscopic evaluation. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The defect areas were filled with dense connective tissues at 10 days in control group. But in the test(NC, HA/CS)groups, the connective tissues around graft materials were formed more loosely and the response of inflammation by graft materials itself was not found. 2. The defect areas were filled with new osteoid tissues and new cementum was not formed on the cut root surface at 35 days in the control group. 3. New osteoid tissue formation was more prominent at 35 days in control than test groups. 4. The NC and HA/CS particles were encapsulated by loose connective tissues at 10 days and by dense connective tissues at 35 days, respectively. 5. In the test groups, resorption of graft particles was not found through the experimental time. From the above results, natural coral and hydroxyapatite/calcium sulfate hemihydrate may be biocompatible and osteoconductive and have a weak adverse reaction to the periodontal tissues.
