  • Phosphorous remains as one of the most limiting nutrients to plant growth, second only to nitrogen. Research on use of biochar as a soil amendment for available phosphorus in temperate calcareous soils has limited studies compared with to tropical acidic soils. An incubation experiment to assess phosphorous availability in a biochar amended calcareous soil under inorganic (Fused superphosphate, FSP) and organic fertilizer (bone meal, BM) and respectively, at the dose of 40, 80 and $120mg\;P\;kg^{-1}$ was carried out. Soil was incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ for 70 days. Results show that the rate of increase in available P was proportional to the fertilizer application rate with or without biochar amendment. Biochar did not have a significant effect on soils amended with either fertilizeron the values of available P. However, time had a significant effect (p<0.001) on the amount of available P during the incubation period. Inorganic fertilizer treatments had recorded high amount of available P with time compared to organic fertilizer treatments. Organic fertilizer treatment sample were significantly not different from control and for most of the incubation time biochar acted as a soil conditioner. Further research is required to understand the holistic and long-term effect of biochar.

  • In order to evaluate effectiveness of zinc source on uptake of zinc by rice plant, a pot experiment carried out using ZnEDTA and $ZnSO_4$ in a glasshouse. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The effectiveness of zinc source on uptake of zinc by rice plants was different with different soil. Namely ZnEDTA was more efficient than $ZnSO_4$ in increasing yield of zinc and concentration of zinc in the plant grown on Jecheon calcareous soil. In case of Keumgok acid soil, however, no superiority of ZnEDTA treatment was found. The plant growing status of ZnEDTA treated calcareous soil was also shown that larger number of tillers per hill, bigger height of the plant and good yield of dry matter production than those of the plant grown on $ZnSO_4$ treatment. Regardless of the zinc source, smaller number of tillers per hill, shorter height of the plant, and the lowest yield of dry matter were shown in the treatment of zinc and straw mixed with both soils. It seemed that more applied zinc was to be fixed by the straw application resulting in poor zinc yield. The extent of the zinc fixation showed markedly in Jecheon calcareous soil.

  • This research was experimented to clarity the effects of the calcareous materials which were utilized to improve the soil in reclaimed tidal land. It is located at the Kang-Hwa polder. Kil-sang myun, Kang-Hwa Gun, Kyung-gi Do. The results obtained are as follows 1. Comparing with the yields of rice in each treatment, it is noticed that the plot treated with ca-humated 1.0% gets the most effect to improve the soil, and the next ones are in the order of the plots treated with raw straw, gypsum and calcium hydroxide. 2. Treating the calcium or organic matter in soil is evaluated to increase the yields of rice in paddy fields of tidal land, because of increasing the number of ear per plant, the number of grain per ear, the weight of 1,000 grains and somthing like that. 3. Adding calcium or organic matter into soil, it makes a good condition for the growth of rice, because of pomoting the formation of soil structure of simple grain type. 4. To improve the soil in reclaimed tidal land, we can separately treat calcium, calcium hydroxide and raw straw in soil, but it is found out the fact that the method of treatment of calcareous materials together with organic matter is more effective.

  • Several methods of in-field measurements of Nitrogen and other soil properties using cores extracted by a hydraulic soil sampler were evaluated. A prototype core scanner was built to accommodate Veris Technologies commercial Vis-NIRS equipment. The testing result for pH, P and Mg were close to RPD (Ratio of Prediction to Deviation = Standard deviation/RMSE) of 2, however the scanner could not achieve the goal of RPD of 2 on some other properties, especially on nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3$) and potassium (K). In situ NIRS/EC probe showed similar results to the core scanner; pH, P and Mg were close to RPD of 2, while $NO_3$ and K were RPD of 1.5 and 1.2, respectively. Correlations between estimations using the probe and the core scanner were strong, with $r^2$ > 0.7 for P, Mg, Total N, Total C and CEC. Preliminary results for mid-IR spectroscopy showed an $r^2$ of 0.068 and an RMSE for nitrate (N) of 18 ppm, even after the removal of calcareous samples and possible N outlier. After removal of calcareous samples on a larger sample set, results improved considerably with an $r^2$ of 0.64 and RMSE of 6 ppm. However, this was only possible after carbonate samples were detected and eliminated, which would not be feasible under in-field measurements. Testing of $NO_3$ and K ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) revealed promising results, with acceptable errors measuring soil solutions containing nitrate and potassium levels that are typical of production agriculture fields.

  • A controlled column study using elution development and miscible displacement was conducted to assess heavy metal transport characteristics in sludge-untreated soil ("Control"), soil treated with an equivalent of sludge 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ ("Soil-Sludge mixtures"), and sewage sludge ("Sludge"). The elution curves (ECs) and the breakthrough curves (BTCs) for Cd, Cu and Zn in sludge 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ treated soils are not different from the sludge-untreated soil, The ECs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which received a pulse of 10 mg of each Cd, Cu and Zn were similar to those of Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which had no Cd, Cu and Zn added, but were very different with the ECs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which received a pulse of Cd, Cu and Zn containing 50 mg of each metal. On the other hand, the BTCs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil columns that were eluted with 500 and $1000mg\;L^{-1}$ of mixed solution of Cd, Cu and Zn were similar to each other, but were distinctly different with the BTCs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column that was eluted with $100mg\;L^{-1}$ mixed solution of Cd, Cu and Zn. Sewage sludge applied at rates of 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ did not affect the transport characteristics of this calcareous soil. The apparent mobility for this sludge treated soil and sludge is: Cd >Zn>Cu. The transport characteristics of Cd and Zn are similar to each other, but are different from those of Cu.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of gamma ray irradiation to the soils added with several organic matters on release sad fixation of $^{65}Zn$, a soil incubation test was carried out by use of an acidic and a calcareous soil. The results obtained were summarized as follows : DTPA extractable $^{65}Zn$ decreased gradually with elapsed time of incubation owing to fixation of $^{65}$Zn by the soils but after four weeks DTPA extractable $^{65}Zn$ was reached an equilibrium state. The most parts of $^{65}Zn$ activity in the equilibrium state was found in the solid phase. The extent of zinc fixation in acidic Keumgok and calcareous Jecheon soils represented as activity basis was 89 and 93.7 per cent of applied $^{65}Zn$ respectively. Increased tendency of DTPA extractable zinc was shown by irradiating gamma ray to both soils because of $^{65}Zn$ fixation could be decreased by irradiation. The extractability of fixed $^{65}Zn$ by DTPA solution was 38.9 per cent in acidic Keumgok soil and only 9.5 per cent in calcareous Jecheon soil. Release of fixed $^{65}Zn$ by irradiation of gamma ray is closely related to pH of both soils. Much more $^{65}Zn$ could be released under low pH condition. Effect of gamma ray irradiation to organic matter sources on release of $^{65}Zn$ could not be differentiated. But in the case of nonirradiated soils, however, glucose treated soils couldrelease much more the extractable zinc as compared to those of the straw or cellulose treatment.

  • To investigate changes of boron fractions in soil with vegetable cultivation affected by boron application Jossangmiho, chinese cabbage was planted in 1/2.000a pot with four different soils which are sandy loam, calcareous, organic and vinyl house soil. Increment of available boron in soil with different boron applications was in the order of vinyl hous soil>organic soil>sandy soil>calcareous soil. The ratio of boron fraction to total boron is highest in $NH_4$-oxalate ext.-B with 19.1 % and lowest in water sol.-B and $CaCl_2$ ext.-B with 0.7% respectively. The boron fraction increment due to the different application ratio was in the order of $NH_4-oxalate$ ext.-B>Mannitol exch.-B> $CaCl_2$ ext.-B> $NH_2OH{\cdpt}HCl$ ext.-B>Water soil.-B. As the concentration of calcium in soil increased. water sol.-B decreased and the other forms of boron increased. In the soil high in organic matter, water sol.-B and $NH_4$-oxalate ext.-B increased significantly. but the other forms of boron not.

  • Ecological role of earthworms in red pine forest was investigated with emphasis on the population size, cast production and changes of physicoKDICical properties of soil by earthworm's activities. The density of earthworms was 62.8/m2 in August, 1992. Average biomass of earthworms was 16.3 g/m2. N and P concentrations in the tissue of earthworms were 28.5 mgN/g and 0.5 mgP/g, respectively. Cast production continued from April to November, with a peak in August. Annual production of earthworm casts was 5,379 g/m2. Bulk density of surface soil decreased due to the earthworm's cast-forming activity. Clay fraction in surface soil increased by addition of casts. Soil KDICical properties were significantly different between the surface soil and the earthworm casts. The amounts of organic matter, N, P, K, Ca and Mg added to the soil via earthworm casts during one year were 9.3t/ha, 11.29 kg/ha, 0.78 kg/ha, 12.36 kg/ha, 140.29 kg/ha and 20.96 kg/ha, respectively. Earthworms can feed on waxy and resinous litter when it became palatable by decomposing processes.

  • The decomposition of litters of Pinus densiflora and the growth of microbial populations in a calcareous region, Youngwal were compared with those in a noncalcareous region, Sinlim. The decay rate of litter in Pinus densiflora in Youngwal was 0.128 and that in Sinlim was 0.096. The differences in the populations of soil bacteria and total microorganisms between the two regions were signficant at the 5% level, but that of fungi and actinomycetes was not at that level. The differences in the content of calcium and pH value of soil between the two regions were significant at the 1% level. The excessive content of calcium became to increase pH value, in turn the high pH decreased the content of available phosphorus in soil. The vertical distribution of the content of available phsophorus was consistent with that of the populations of fungi and actinomycetes in Youngwal.

  • In this study, a Jeju sand, which contains both siliceous and calcareous materials, was sampled from a beach in Jeju Island. It is observed that the Jeju sand has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles. From cone penetration test using calibration chamber system, it is found that the cone tip resistance($q_c$)-relative density(Dr)-vertical effective stress(${\sigma_v}'$) relation of Jeju sand almost matches to that of high compressible quartz sand. However, this correlation overestimates the relative density of a coastal sediments in Jeju Island maybe due to the cementation effect of this area. From analysis of the results of cone penetration and SPS tests at a coastal area in Jeju Island, it seems reasonable to assume that the coast of Jeju Island is a natural cemented sediments.
