  • The Geodo skarn deposit is located in the Taebaeksan Basin, central eastern Korean Peninsula. The geology of the deposit consists of Cambrian to Ordovician calcareous sedimentary rocks and the Cretaceous Eopyeong granitoids. The skarns at Geodo occur around the Eopyeong granitoids, which consist, from early to late, of magnetite-bearing equigranular quartz monzodiorite, granodiorite, and dykes. These dykes emanated randomly from equigranular granodiorite and some of dykes spatially accompany skarns. Skarn Fe mineralization, referred as Prospect I and II in this study, is newly discovered beyond previously known skarns adjacent to the quartz monzodiorite. These discoveries show a vertical and lateral variation of skarn facies, grading from massive reddish-brown garnet-quartz in a lower and proximal zone to banded in an upper and distal zone, reflecting changes in lithofacies of the host rocks. Skarn veins in distal locations are parallel to sedimentary laminae, suggesting that lithologic control is important although proximal skarn has totally obliterated primary structures, due to intense retrograde alteration. Skarns at Geodo are systematically zoned relative to the causative dykes. Skarn zonation comprises proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (only in Prospect I) at the contact between skarn and marble. Retrograde alteration is intensely developed adjacent to the contact with dykes and occurs as modification of the pre-existing assemblages and progressive destruction such as brecciation of the prograde assemblages. The retrograde alteration assemblages consist predominantly of epidote, K-feldspar, amphibole, chlorite, and calcite. Most of the magnetite (the main ore mineral), replaces calc-silicate minerals such as garnet in the lower proximal exoskarn, whereas it occurs massive in distal pyroxene and amphibole in the upper and distal exoskarn. The emanation of dykes from the equigranular granodiorite has provided channelways for ascent of skarn-forming fluids from a deep source, whereas the style and nature of skarns suggest that originally structurally-controlled skarn-forming fluids may migrate long distances laterally to produce skarn in calcareous sedimentary rocks.

  • In general, aluminum alloys forms the passive film($Al_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3{\cdot}3H_2O$) in neutral solution. However, the passive film created on the surface will be destroyed by chloride ions contained in sea water so the corrosion will occur. In this study, in order to solve the problem of corrosion under a seawater environment, potentiostatic protection techniques were applied to Al-4.5%Mg-0.6%Mn aluminum alloy in seawater. At polarization experiments, active state were observed at anodic polarization and concentration polarization by reduction of dissolves oxygen and activation polarization were found at anodic polarization. As a results of potentiostatic experiment, calcareous deposit were created much more as applying time increase from the turning point of the concentration polarization and activation polarization and crevice corrosion was partially observed between calcareous deposit and surface of base metal. Overall potentiostatic anodic polarization experiment was difficult to apply potentiostatic corrosion protection technology by occurrence of active state, whereas potentiostatic cathodic polarization experiment examined optimum corrosion protection condition of -1.1 V~-0.75 V within the range of concentration polarization considered various applying time.

  • The Ulsan Fe-W deposit, which can be classified as a calcareous skarn deposit, is represented by ore pipe consisting principally of magnetite and lesser amounts of scheelite with minor sulphides, sulphosaits, arsenides, sulpharsenides, etc. At Ulsan mine, metasomatic processes of skarn growth may be divided broadly into two stages based on the paragenetic sequence of calc-silicate minerals and their chemical composition; early and late skarn stages. Early stage has started with the formation of highly calcic assemblages of wollastonite, diopsidic clinopyroxene and nearly pure grossular, which are followed by the formation of clinopyroxenes with salite to ferrosalite composition and grandite garnets with intermediate composition. Based on these calc-silicate assemblages, the temperatures of early skarn formations have been in the ranges of $550^{\circ}$ to $450^{\circ}$. The calc-silicate assemblages formed during the earlier half period of late skarn stage show the enrichment of notable iron and slight manganese, and the depletion of magnesium; clinopyroxenes are hedenbergitic, and grandite garnets are andraditic. The formation temperatures during this skarn stage are inferred to have been in the range of $430^{\circ}$ to $470^{\circ}C$ at low $X_{CO_2}$ by data from fluid inclusions of late andraditic garnets. The later half period of late skarn stage is characterized by the hydrous alteration of pre-existing minerals and the formation of hydrous silicates. The main iron-tungsten mineralization representing prominent deposition of magnetite immediately followed by minor scheelite impregnation has taken place at the middle of early skarn stage, while complex polymetallic mineralization has proceeded during and after the late skarn stage. Various metals and semimetals of Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Ag, In, Sn, Sb, Te, Pb and Bi have been in various states such as native metal, sulphides, arsenides, sulphosaits, sulpharsenides and tellurides.

  • The surveyed mines are located in a polymetallic vein, replacement, and skarn mineral district in the central Andes of Peru. Iscaycruz, which includes underground and open pit mines that produce zinc and lead concentrates, was the largest mineral deposit of an important group of base metal deposits in the Andes of central Peru. The deposits are sub-vertical seams of polymetallic ores(Zn, Cu, and Pb). These seams are hosted by Jurassic and Cretaceous sedimentary rock formation. The intrusion of igneous rocks in these formations originated metallic deposits of metasomatic and skarn types. The Raura mine is composed of polymetallic deposit of veins and replacement orebodies. The main sedimentary unit in the area is Cretaceous Machay Limestone. The Raura depression contains several orebodies each with different mineralization: predominantly Pb-Zn bearing Catuvo orebody; Ag-rich galena-bearing Lake Ninacocha orebody; Cu-Ag bearing Esperanza and Restauradora orebody. Huaron is a hydrothermal polymetallic deposit of silver, lead, zinc, and copper mineralization hosted within structures likely related to the intrusion of monzonite dikes, principally located within the Huaron anticline. Mineralization is encountered in veins parallel to the main fault systems, in replacement bodies known as "mantos" associated with the calcareous sections of the conglomerates and other favourable stratigraphic horizons, and as dissemination in the monzonitic intrusions at vein intersections.

  • Various skarn ore deposits of Pb-Zn, Fe-Cu, W-Mo and others are widely distributed in the study area which consists mainly of Cambro Ordovician calcareous rocks. The ore deposits are all in close association with specific types of granitic rocks of mid-late Cretaceous age according to the kinds of ores: Fe-Cu deposit with granodiorite-quartz monzodiorite, Pb-Zn deposit with granite-granodiorite, W-Mo deposit with granite, and Mn deposit with quartz porphyry. The granitic rock of Fe-Cu deposit has lower content in K and higher in Ca than those of Pb-Zn deposits. On the contrary, the granitic rock of W-Mo deposit has much higher content in K and lower in Ca in comparison to those of Pb-Zn deposits. However, the granitic rock of Mn deposit shows similar variation to those of Pb-Zn deposits. Lithophile trace elements of Sr and Rb tend to vary in close relation with major elements of K and Ca, respectively. In good contrast, chalcophile elements of Cu, Pb, Zn, Wand Mo are enriched in the granitic rocks of their ore deposits, and other trace elements of Ni and Co show a trend to vary in relation with Mg, Fe and Cu, which have the same replacement index (0.14) as Ni and Co. Average K/Rb and Ca/Sr ratios of the granitic rocks range nearly within 300~150 and 150~40, respectively, and the distribution pattern of the ratios is different according to the kind of ore deposits: Fe-Cu deposit is plotted toward K-Rb poor region whereas Pb-Zn and W-Mo deposits toward K-Rb rich region. In contrast, Fe-Cu and Fe deposits are plotted toward Ca-Sr rich region whereas Pb-Zn deposit toward Ca-Sr poor region. The variation trend of chemical elements of the mid-late Cretaceous granitic rocks in the study area is similar to that of the Cretaceous granitic rocks in the Gyeongsang Basin. Therefore, this geochemical result may be applicable to determining what kinds of ore deposits a Cretaceous granitic rock is favourable for, and whether it is productive or non-productive for systematic geochemical exploration works.

  • Metallic structures in the oil and gas production undergo severe degradation due to sweet and sour corrosion caused by the presence of $CO_2$ and $H_2S$ in the fluid environment. The corrosion behavior of 304 austenitic stainless was investigated in the presence of varying concentrations of $CO_2$ or $H_2S$ and $CO_2+H_2S$ to understand the effect of the parameters either individually or in combination. Potentiodynamic polarization study revealed that a small amount of $CO_2$ aided in the formation of calcareous deposit of protective layer on passive film of 304 steel, while increase in $CO_2$ concentration ruptured the layer resulting in sweet corrosion. The presence of $S^{2-}$ damaged the passive and protective layer of the steel and higher levels increased the degradation rate. Electrochemical impedance studies revealed lower polarization resistance and impedance at higher concentration of $CO_2$ or $H_2S$, supporting the outcomes of polarization study. XRD analysis revealed different types of iron carbides and iron sulphides corresponding to sweet and sour corrosion as the corrosion products, respectively. SEM analysis revealed the presence of uniform, localized and sulphide cracking in sour corrosion and general corrosion with protective carbide layer amid for sweet corrosion.

  • The Sangdong tungsten (mostly scheelite) mine is located on the southern limb of a major syncline, the Hambaeg syncline, in a thick sequence of lower Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in the mideastern part of south Korea. Productive scheelite mineralization in Sangdong area is confined to one single formation, the Myobong Slate. Four major ore beds, which have an lateral extension over than 1 km and were not heavily subjected to spatial disturbance, are developed in the Myobong Formation. The original materials of the ore-comprising horizones were probably of either calcareous or silceous sediments. The four ore beds, especially in the case of Main ore bed, display both lateral and vertical zoning. Association quartz-mica-scheelite is predominant in the central, while association hornblende-quartz-diopside-scheelite, diopside-garnet and wollastonite-garnet are developed in this order towards the periphery of the ore beds. Petrologically, two phases of thermometamorphism are recognized. The first phase is represented by the association wollastonite-garnet and diopside-garnet, while the second phase by the association hornblende-quartz-diopside-scheelite and quartz-mica-scheelite. The associations of the second phase do constitute prodctive ore. The high background value of tungsten in the area surrounding the Sangdong mine reveals that the area can be considered a geochemical zone enriched in tungsten. Studies on the trace element patterns were carried out to draw useful criteria for the purpose of future geochemical exploration in the area. The increasing trend of the ratio Rb $({\times}1000)/K_2O$ of the Myobong Slate towards the known mineralization area proved to be indicative for the presence of tungsten mineralization.

  • The Gagok stratabound skarn deposit is the result of the intrusion of the Cretaceous granitic pluton into the Paleozoic calcareous rocks. The subvolcanic intrusion ranges in composition from quartz monzonite to granite porphyry with I-type, calc-alkaline and weakly peraluminous characteristics. Both endoskarn and exoskarn are developed at the Gagok Zn-(Pb) deposit, with more exoskarn than endoskarn. Geochemical and mineralogical characteristics in the Seongok and Wolgok orebodies can be treated in terms of self-organization. Sphalerites in the Gagok ore can also incorporate minor amounts of Mn, Cd, Cu and In. Trace element concentrations in different orebodies vary because fractionation of a given element into sphalerite is influenced by formation temperature and the amount of sphalerite in the ore. A group of high In/Zn and Cd/Zn ratios in ores, and low Mn/Fe ratios in sphalerites are correlated with proximal processes of a magmatic source. The pattern of minor/trace element variations in ores and sphalcrites can be used for petrogenetic interprctation, e.g., orebody zonation related to crystallization temperature and fluid d sources.
