  • To date the KOMPSAT OSMI(Ocean Scanning Multi-spectral Imager) data have been widely used in natural disaster monitoring such as Typhoon, Asian Dust, Red Tide, and Forest Fire. Quantitative analyses related to the marine ecosystem have been delayed because they require good quality of data through Cal/Val activities. To resolve such problem, KARI performed the OSMI crosscalibration study with SeaWiFS team. In this study, we will demonstrate the OSMI ocean color products with updated cross-calibration coefficients and compare them to the previous cross-calibration results.

  • KOMPSAT-3A images have been used in various kinds of applications, since its launch in 2015. However, there were limits to scientific analysis and application extensions of these data, such as vegetation index estimation, because no tool was developed to obtain the surface reflectance required for analysis of the actual land environment. The surface reflectance is a product of performing an absolute atmospheric correction or calibration. The objective of this study is to quantitatively verify the accuracy of top-of-atmosphere reflectance and surface reflectance of KOMPSAT-3A images produced from the OTB open-source extension program, performing the cross-validation with those provided by a site measurement data of RadCalNet, an international Calibration/Validation (Cal/Val) portal. Besides, surface reflectance was obtained from Landsat-8 OLI images in the same site and applied together to the cross-validation process. According to the experiment, it is proven that the top-of-atmosphere reflectance of KOMPSAT-3A images differs by up to ± 0.02 in the range of 0.00 to 1.00 compared to the mean value of the RadCalNet data corresponding to the same spectral band. Surface reflectance in KOMPSAT-3A images also showed a high degree of consistency with RadCalNet data representing the difference of 0.02 to 0.04. These results are expected to be applicable to generate the value-added products of KOMPSAT-3A images as analysisready data (ARD). The tools applied in thisstudy and the research scheme can be extended as the new implementation of each sensor model to new types of multispectral images of compact advanced satellites (CAS) for land, agriculture, and forestry and the verification method, respectively.

  • Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) is a main payload on the KOMPSAT-2 satellite to perform the earth remote sensing. The MSC instrument has one(1) channel for panchromatic imaging and four(4) channel for multi-spectral imaging covering the spectral range from 450nm to 900nm using TDI CCD Focal Plane Array (FPA). The compression method on KOMPSAT-2 MSC was selected and used to match EOS input rate and PDTS output data rate on MSC image data chain. At once the MSC performance was carefully handled to minimize any degradation so that it was analyzed and restored in KGS(KOMPSAT Ground Station) during LEOP and Cal./Val.(Calibration and Validation) phase. In this paper, on-orbit image data chain in MSC and image data processing on KGS including general MSC description is briefly described. The influences on image performance between on-board compression algorithms and between performance restoration methods in ground station are analyzed and discussed.

  • Extending the success of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM), the spaceborne measurement of precipitation by Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) is initiated. The GPM consists of a core satellite which will have a dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) and a constellation of small satellites equipped with microwave radiometers. The GPM is inherently a global program. Responding to the GPM plan, many other nations are much interested in participating in the GPM team or simply utilizing GPM products aiming at the development of meteorological technology. Korea can fully function its role if Korea is selected as a CAL/VAL site for the GPM because Korea maintains a well-established dense rain gauge network (AWS), precipitation radars, and the Haenam super site for surface observation. In this feasibility study, the necessities of the GPM project in the context of academical and social backgrounds and associated international and domestic activities are investigated. And GPM-related core technologies and application areas are defined. As a result, it is found that GPM will represent a great opportunity for us because of its ability to provide not only much enhanced three-hourly global rain products but also very useful tools for the enhancement of weather forecasting capabilities, management of water resources, development and implementation of monitoring techniques for severe weather phenomena, agricultural managements and climate application. Furthermore, rain retrieval and CAL/VAL technologies obtained during the involvement in the international GPM project will serve as basic knowledges to run our own geostationary satellite program.

  • Aim : The ultimate goal of periodontal treatment is regeneration of periodontium that have been lost due to inflammatory periodontal disease. Recently, Silicon contained Coralline Hydroxyapatite and Beta Tricalcium Phosphate bone substitute have been introduced to achieve periodontal regeneration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the Silicon contained Coralline Hydroxyapatite and Beta Tricalcium Phosphate(BoneMedik-$DM^{(R)}$, Meta Biomed Co., Ltd. Oksan, Korea) on periodontal intrabony defects. Methods and materials : Clinical effects of Silicon contained Coralline Hydroxyapatite and Beta Tricalcium Phosphate implantation in intrabony defects were evaluated 6 months after surgery in Sixty-one intrabony defects from Fourty-six patients with chronic periodontitis. Twenty-nine experimental defects in twenty-five patients received the Silicon contained Coralline Hydroxyapatite and Beta Tricalcium Phosphate(test group), while Thirty-Three defects in twenty-one patients were treated with flap procedure only( control group). Comparative observation were done for preoperative and postoperative differences between control and experimental clinical parameters,-clinical attachment 10ss(CAL), probing depth(PD), bone probing depth(BPD), gingi val recession. Results : Postoperative improvements in CAL, PD, BPD were observed in both test and control groups(P<0.0l). However, the improvements in CAL, PD, BPD of the test group were significantly greater than control group. Conclusion : Healing of the both groups were uneventful during experimental periods. Use of Silicon contained Coralline Hydroxyapatite and Beta Tricalcium Phosphate in a flap operation resulted in significantly greater improvements in CAL, PD, and BPD over flap operation alone. Silicon contained Coralline Hydroxyapatite and Beta Tricalcium Phosphate will be good bone substitute materials for treatment of intrabony defects.

  • A comparison was made between the chlorophyll $\alpha$ and suspended solid (SS) retrievals from OSMI and SeaWiFS sensor to chlorophyll $\alpha$ and SS values determined with the standard method during the NFRDI's research cruises. The percentage of organic and inorganic materials from the SS was calculated to study the contribution of turbid water in the northern part of the East China Sea. The open sea waters in the Kuroshio regions of the East China Sea showed relatively higher concentration of volatile SS. However, towards the northwestern part of the East China Sea, the situation became much more optically different with the non-volatile SS from the Yangtze river and the sea bottom sources in the sea in winter and spring seasons. Furthermore, in order to indirectly detect low salinity water with high turbidity, which related to the Yangtze river using remote sensed data from the satellites, a comparison between the results of the band ratio(nLw 490nm/nLw 555nm) of SeaWiFS(OSMI) and the distribution of low salinity around the Jeju Island was presented.

  • A bio-optic survey was made in the Yellow Sea in May, 1998 for OSMI cal/val and application project. Optical measurements were made in nine stations. From these measurements, apparent and inherent optical properties such as $K_d$, R, a, and $b_b$ were estimated. The patterns of reflectance indicated that all three major constituents, namely, chlorophyll-a, suspended sediments, and CDOM were active in determining the optical properties in the Yellow Sea. Their relative contribution was different among the stations. All the stations had high backscattering and their values fell in Case 2 category. Although the total absorption was very high, it could not be explained by the level of CDOM concentration. It is suggested that the suspended sediment might be highly absorptive and further study is needed to investigate the optical properties of the suspended sediments.

  • After launch of Low Earth Orbit(LEO) satellite, Initial Activation Checkout(IAC) and Calibration and Validation(Cal & Val) procedure are performed prior to enter normal operation phase. During normal operation phase, most of the time is allocated for mission operation except following up measures to anomaly and orbit maintenance. Since mission operation capability is key indicator for success of LEO satellite program and consistent with promotion purpose of LEO satellite program, reliability should be ensured by conducting through test. In order to ensure reliability by examining the role of LEO satellite and ground station during ground test phase, realistic test scenario that is similar to actual operation conditions should be created, and test that aims to verify full mission cycle should be performed by transmitting created command and receiving image and telemetry data. This paper describes the test design and result. Consideration items for test design are described in detail and result of designed test items are summarized.
