  • Recently, wave dissipating structures with porosity are widely used to improve habor tranquility and to reduce the wave overtopping rate. In this study, hydraulic model tests were performed to examine hydraulic efficiency of slit caissons, igloo blocks, and hollow blocks. The model tests showed that slit caissons were the most effective in dissipating wave energy under moderate wave conditions. Slit caissons and igloo blocks showed no significant difference in reducing wave overtopping rate. Hallow blocks are less effective in reducing wave overtopping rate than slit caissons and igloo blocks lU1der higher wave energy conditions.

  • The design and construction are carried out to improve the structural stability of caisson breakwaters by installing new caissons on the front or rear of old caissons. The wave forces acting on caisson are excessively calculated by the resonance of fluid existing between the old caisson and the new caisson in the numerical analysis using potential flow. In this study, we used the damping zone option in ANSYS AQWA program to analyze the wave forces acting on individual caissons according to the interaction effects between the incident wave and the caisson. By applying the damping zone option to the fluid in which resonance occurs, the wave forces acting on individual caissons were calculated by the change of damping factor. In addition, the wave force characteristics acting on individual caissons were analyzed for the different distances between caissons in the frequency domain analysis.

  • In order to increse the stability of old caissons, the design and the construction are performed by installation of new caissons on the back of or on the front of old caissons. In this study, we use the eigenfunction expasnion method to analyze the characteristics of wave forces when new circular caissons are installed on the back of old caissons. The comparison of numerical results between eigenfunction expansion method and ANSYS AQWA is made and the wave force acting on each circular caisson is calculated by considering the wave-structure interaction effect.

  • A new prediction model is derived for the uplift capacity of suction caissons using a hybrid method coupling genetic programming (GP) and simulated annealing (SA), called GP/SA. The predictor variables included in the analysis are the aspect ratio of caisson, shear strength of clayey soil, load point of application, load inclination angle, soil permeability, and loading rate. The proposed model is developed based on well established and widely dispersed experimental results gathered from the literature. To verify the applicability of the proposed model, it is employed to estimate the uplift capacity of parts of the test results that are not included in the modeling process. Traditional GP and multiple regression analyses are performed to benchmark the derived model. The external validation of the GP/SA and GP models was further verified using several statistical criteria recommended by researchers. Contributions of the parameters affecting the uplift capacity are evaluated through a sensitivity analysis. A subsequent parametric analysis is carried out and the obtained trends are confirmed with some previous studies. Based on the results, the GP/SA-based solution is effectively capable of estimating the horizontal, vertical and inclined uplift capacity of suction caissons. Furthermore, the GP/SA model provides a better prediction performance than the GP, regression and different models found in the literature. The proposed simplified formulation can reliably be employed for the pre-design of suction caissons. It may be also used as a quick check on solutions developed by more time consuming and in-depth deterministic analyses.

  • In order to increase the structural stability of existing caisson breakwater, the design and the construction is carried out by installation of new caissons on the back or the front of old caissons. In this study, we use the ANSYS AQWA program to analyze the wave forces acting on individual caisson according to effects of wave structure interaction when new caissons are additionally installed on existing caisson breakwater. Firstly, the wave force characteristics acting on the individual caisson were analyzed for each period (frequency) in the frequency domain. In time domain analysis, the dynamic wave force characteristics were strongly influenced by the distance between caissons on the frequency at which the unusual distribution of wave forces occurs.

  • The objective of this study is to monitor the health status of harbor caissons which have potential foundation damage. To obtain the objective, the following approaches are performed. Firstly, a structural damage monitoring(SDM) method is designed for interlocked multiple-caisson structures. The SDM method utilizes the change in modal strain energy to monitor the foundation damage in a target caisson unit. Secondly, a finite element model of a caisson system which consists of three caisson units is established to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. In the finite element simulation, the caisson units are constrained each other by shear-key connections. The health status of the caisson system against various levels of foundation damage is monitored by measuring relative modal displacements between the adjacent caissons.

  • This study has investigated the feasibility of caissons for accelerating consolidation (C.A.C.) constructed in clays with anisotropic permeability by improving the former study on C.A.C. in isotropic clays. Analytical solutions for excessive pore water pressures of two-dimensional consolidation equation and average degrees of consolidation with varying time factors have been provided by considering anisotropic permeability. With varying anisotropic permeability ratios of 5, 10, and 50, consolidation times required for reaching the average degree of consolidation of 90% for C.A.C. at the section of $\xi$=0.1 are shorter than those for conventional caissons by 8, 13, and 47 times, respectively. C.A.C. is more effective in reducing consolidation time as anisotropic permeability ratio increases. This study provides also plots for average degrees of consolidation versus the width to depth ratios of analyzed sections and permeability ratios, which will enable engineers to determine easily average consolidation settlements.

  • The design and the construction are carried out by installation of new caissons on the back or the front of existing caissons to increase the stability of existing caisson breakwater. In this study, we use the eigenfunction expansion method to analyze the effects of wave structure interaction when new porous dual circular caissons are installed on the back or the front of existing breakwater. The porous dual circular caisson which consisting of a porous outer cylinder circumscribing an impermeable inner cylinder is one type of seawater exchanging breakwater. The comparison of numerical results between present method and Sankarbabu et al. is made, and the wave force and the wave run-up acting on each porous dual circular caisson are calculated for various parameters by considering the wave structure interaction.
