Most fishing nets used in fish cage aquaculture are made of synthetic fibers such as polyamide (PA) and polyethylene (PE). Therefore, it is challenging to maintain the internal volume of the fish cage due to biofouling, which can increase the load on the cage or reduce dissolved oxygen levels by impeding smooth current flow. To address this issue, research has been conducted to replace conventional synthetic fiber cage nets with brass nets, demonstrating certain benefits such as improved productivity and ease of fish cage management. However, given the need for a more thorough examination of brass fishing net weaving technology and performance, this study assessed the optimal weaving method for brass fishing nets to be used in fish cages. Additionally, it provided essential data for the practical application of brass fishing nets by evaluating their weight, tensile strength, elongation, fatigue resistance, and wear resistance. The study concluded that weaving brass fishing nets using the chain link method ensures durability, ease of installation, and compact storage in a scroll-like form. Moreover, due to their superior fatigue and wear resistance properties, brass nets can offer increased utility if appropriate net diameter and length are selected to compensate for their higher weight per unit area and relatively higher cost compared to existing fiber fishing nets.

In order to investigate the optimal design weight of sinkers for preventing cage net from deforming in current, the model experiment on 2 types of square cage nets with different S sub(n)/S, the ratio of total area of netting projected to the perpendicular to the water flow S sub(n) to wall area of netting S, and 4 kinds of sinkers was carried out in circulation water channel. The model cage nets were made in 1/10 scale and the total weight in water of 4 sinkers attached to each corner of their bottom frames was 18, 54, 90, and 126g, respectively equivalent to 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7 kg per unit area of prototype net. The results obtained can be summarizes as follows; Due to the deformation of each net where it was lifted towards the surface in severe conditions, its volume was reduced. This depended highly on the weight of sinkers placed in the bottom corner of cage nets, even if the variation of S sub(n)/S had a little effect on their deformation in current less than 0.4 m/s. In addition, it was observed that the total weight of sinkers for preventing the net from deforming to the extent of less than 50% inside its initial volume was 31 to 245 kg in the range of 0.3 to 0.6 m/s and the adequate design weight of sinker was approximately 0.5 kg per its unit area.
For complex flexible structures such as nets, the determination of drag forces and its deformation is a challenging task. The accurate prediction of loads on cages is one of the key steps in designing fish farm facilities. The basic physics with a simple cage, can be addressed by the use of experimental studies. However, to design more complex cage system for various environmental conditions, a reliable numerical simulation tool is essential. In this work, the current load on a cage is calculated using a Morison-force model applied at instantaneous positions of equivalent-net modeling. Variations of solidity ratio ($S_n$) of the net and current speed are considered. An equivalent array of cylinders is built to represent the physical netting. Based on the systematic comparisons between the published experimental data for Raschel nets and the current numerical simulations, carried out using the commercial software OrcaFlex, a new formulation for $C_d$ values, used in the equivalent-net model, is presented. The similar approach can also be applied to other netting materials following the same procedure. In case of high solidity ratio and current speed, the hybrid model defines $C_d$ as a function of Re (Reynolds number) and $S_n$ to better represent the corresponding weak diffraction effects. Otherwise, the conventional $C_d$ values depending only on Re can be used with including shielding effects for downstream elements. This new methodology significantly improves the agreement between numerical and experimental data.

In order to analyze the hydrodynamic forces on fish cage systems, made of frames and nettings, under waves and current, hydraulic model experiments for square type and circular type of fish cage system were carried out in a towing tank. Both cage systems consist of net cages supported by floating frames made of two concentric pipes and four weights hanging from the bottom corners of the nets. There was little difference in the hydrodynamic force on the square type of fish cage system by wave heading under regular waves and the peak frequency of the force on each cage system was in a good agreement with that of induced irregular wave. In addition, it was also observed that the circular type of cage system was more stable to the action of waves and current than the square type.

This study is aimed to analyze the hydrodynamic characteristics of the cage net in the circulating water channel. It visualized wake flows using a PIV (paricle imaging velocimetry) and analyzed the flow velocity distribution. In addition, the vorticity and turbulence intensity were analyzed from the wake flow distribution and compared changes by flow velocity. Results showed that the average turbulence intensity in the circulating water channel was very stable showing less than 1% in the range between 0.2 and 0.8 m/s. The drag coefficient affecting to the netting was estimated to be 1.35. The flow decreasing rate of the wake in the middle of the netting was 2.1% at the range of 0.2 m/s and it was constant at 6.6-6.9% over the range of 0.4 m/s irrespective of velocity increases. Finally, the change of turbulence intensity by netting and knot mesh could be confirmed. These results can be utilized as a basic information for the future research of flow characteristics by fishing nets and meshes.
In order to analyze the dynamic motions of fish cage systems made of a frame and a netting under the conditions of waves and current, the hydraulic model experiment at towing tank and the numerical computation using boundary integral element method based on linear potential theory were carried out on a square and a circular type of fish cage, The computed and measured results for the dynamic motions of model fish cage systems showed that the heave and pitch motions were almost unaffected by the inclusion of nets, while the surge motions were very reduced by drag force acting on them. In addition, irregular wave-induced motions of fish cages included non-negligible 2nd order harmonic components at high frequency nearly twice the wave frequency. The reason why these motions were considered was due to resonance or structural components of frames being overflown and out of water during a wave cycle. It was found that circular type was more desirable structure in the open sea than square one only in the respect of dynamic motions due to waves and current. Further verifications were needed considering hydrodynamic forces, fatigue life, and structure analysis based on long term stochastic waves including frequency and time domain for the purpose of analyzing and designing fish cage systems.
Investigations were conducted to prevent entrance of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) with very fine mesh nets. B. tabaci vectors tomato yellow leaf curl virus in tomatoes. B. tabaci could be completely prevented to penetrate into an 83 mesh net, though few of them passed the 60 mesh net. An independent 60 mesh net cage was built within one of the three interconnected common plastic greenhouse ($21.0{\times}18.3m$) in order to find its usefulness as a crop protection tool from insect pests. TYLCV infected tomato plants were not detected, though a few eggs of B. tabaci and mines of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) were detected locally at the entrance of the sliding door. There were practically no significant differences between treatments of nets and the conventional plant height, leaf length and width, number of floret clusters, sugar brix, and product yield. In viewpoints of commercialization, it could be considered highly prospectful to apply to the nets to glasshouses or other greenhouses in which the growing period of crops is long, if the nets were used in the openings of sides, ceilings, and entrances of the greenhouse. However, it might be necessary to take preventive measures for occurrences of insect pests living in soil, temporarily or permanently, as well as high humidity diseases.
New Paint, Stapol N-6200D, products from Song Woun Industrial Co. Ltd., was tested on its chemical effect on fouling organisms attached to fishing nets. Two kinds of fishing nets with different mesh size, 5 mm (cage culture net) and 33 mm (set net) were painted and attached to $1m^2$ PVC quadrates. The quadrates with painted or non-painted fishing nets were placed at the surface water layer of southern coast of Korea. Monthly species composition and abundance of fouling organisms were analysed as well as total weight of fouling organisms including mud on fishing nets. On the other hand, anti-fouling effect of the organisms and mud on different color paints was studied and the durability of chemical effect of painted fishing net on fouling organisms was also estimated.

The objective of this study was to investigate the optimal shapes and arrangements of sinkers attached to net cages to prevent their deformation in a current. A series of model experiments were conducted in a circulating water channel, using 5 different types of sinker(high-weighted ball, low-weighted ball, columntype, egg-shaped and iron bar-framed) and 2 types of square net cage constructed from both Nylon Raschel netting and Nylon knotted netting, on a 1/20th scale. The deflection of the model nets against the flow was smallest with the iron bar-framed weight compared to the other four types of sinker. It was expected that the optimal shapes of sinkers would be either the ball or egg-shape; however, iron bar-framed weight actually had larger drag forces. The dispersed deployment of sinkers on the bottom frames of model net cages performed better with relatively slow flows, while the concentrated deployment at 4 corners functioned better with relatively fast flows, in preventing the nets from becoming severely deformed. The deformation of the net cages was larger for the Nylon knotted netting than the Nylon Raschel netting. With respect to flow resistance, the Nylon Raschel netting, rather than the Nylon knotted netting, was more suitable for construction of net cages.

A toxicological study of the pesticides for rice paddy to loach was conducted with iprobenfos 17% GR, diazinon 3 % GR, and butachlor 5 % GR to establish the field test method and their toxicological effects on loach under the actual field conditions. The type C of cage was more effective in the sense of a little stress from the cage. The nets for shading and for preventing the birds were necessary to maintain the water temperature and to prevent the predators. The cumulative mortality of loach exposed to iprobenfos 17% GR, diazinon 3% GR and butachlor 5% GR were 10, 55 and 22%, respectively, during 7 days of exposure. The averaged concentration of the pesticides in paddy water 2 days after application were 1.67, 0.22 and 0.26 mg/L, and mortalities were 7, 50 and 17%, respectively, representing the similar results with acute toxicity $(48h-LC_{50})$.
