  • Stay cables, such as used in cable-stayed bridges, are prone to vibration due to their low inherent damping characteristics. Recently some studies have shown that active and semiactive control system using MR damper can potentially achieve both higher performance levels than passive control system and adaptability with few of the detractions. However, a control system including a power supply, controller, and sensors is required to maximize the performance of the MR damper and this complicated control system is not effective to most of large civil structures. This paper proposes a smart complex damping system which consists of toggle system and MR dampers by introducing electromagnetic induction(EMI) system as an external power source to MR damper. The performance of the proposed damping device has been compared with that of the passive-type control systems employing a MR damper, a linear viscous damper, and EMI system.

  • A cable-stayed bridge (CSB) is one of the most complicated structures, especially when subjected to earthquakes and taking into consideration the effect of soil-structure-interaction (SSI). A CSB of a 500 m mid-span was modeled by the SAP2000 software and was subjected to four different earthquakes. To mitigate the harmful effect of the vibration generated from each earthquake, four mitigation schemes were used and compared with the non-mitigation model to determine the effectiveness of each scheme, when applying on the SSI or fixed CSB models. For earthquake mitigation, tuned mass damper (TMD) systems and spring dampers with different placements were used to help reduce the seismic response of the CBS model. The pylons, the mid-span of the deck and the pylon-deck connections are the best TMDs and spring dampers placements to achieve an effective reduction of the earthquake response on such bridges.

  • This paper presents the dynamic behavior of stay cable with Lead-Shear damper( LSD) near the support. This kind of research about the dynamic behavior of LSD is essential to design LSD in order to mitigate the ambient vibration of stay cable. The hysteresis curve of LSD was assumed to be perfect elasto-plastic behavior based on the real hysteretic behavior of such lead-based dampers. Mechanical model of LSD was equivalent Kelvin model and sag effect of stay cable was considered. Yielding force (also referred as size) of LSD was selected as a design parameter. Effects of tension of stay cable and installation point of LSD were studied. It was found that optimal size of LSD exists for each case of stay cable.

  • This paper presents the LRB-based hybrid base isolation system employing additional semiactive control devices for seismic protection of cable-stayed bridges by examining the ASCE first generation benchmark problem for a cable-stayed bridge. In this study, ideal magnetorheological dampers (MRDs) are considered as additional semiactive control devices. Numerical simulation results show that the hybrid base isolation system is effective in reducing the structural responses of the benchmark cable-stayed bridge under the historical earthquakes considered. The simulation results also demonstrate that the hybrid base Isolation system employing semiactive MRDs is robust to the stiffness uncertainty of the structure. Therefore, the LRB-based hybrid base isolation system employing MRDs could be appropriate in real applications for full-scale civil infrastructures.

  • Cables are prone to vibration due to their low inherent damping characteristics. Recently, negative stiffness dampers have gained attentions, because of their promising energy dissipation ability. The viscous inertial mass damper (termed as VIMD hereinafter) can be viewed as one realization of the inerter. It is formed by paralleling an inertial mass part with a common energy dissipation element (e.g., viscous element) and able to provide pseudo-negative stiffness properties to flexible systems such as cables. A previous study examined the potential of IMD to enhance the damping of stay cables. Because there are already models for common energy dissipation elements, the key to establish a general model for IMD is to propose an analytical model of the rotary mass component. In this paper, the characteristics of the rotary mass and the proposed analytical model have been evaluated by the numerical and experimental tests. First, a series of harmonic tests are conducted to show the performance and properties of the IMD only having the rotary mass. Then, the mechanism of nonlinearities is analyzed, and an analytical model is introduced and validated by comparing with the experimental data. Finally, a real-time hybrid simulation test is conducted with a physical IMD specimen and cable numerical substructure under distributed sinusoidal excitation. The results show that the chosen model of the rotary mass part can provide better estimation on the damper's performance, and it is better to use it to form a general analytical model of IMD. On the other hand, the simplified damper model is accurate for the preliminary simulation of the cable responses.

  • An extensive numerical investigation on the magnetorheological (MR) damper-based smart passive control system for mitigating vibration of stay cables under wind loads has been conducted. The smart passive system is incorporated with an electromagnetic induction (EMI) device for reducing complexity of the conventional MR damper based semi-active control system by eliminating an external power supply part and a feedback control part (i.e., sensors and controller). In this study, the control performance of the smart passive system has been evaluated by using a cable structure model extracted from a full-scale long stay cable with high tension. Numerical simulation results of the proposed smart damping system are compared with those of the passive and semi-active control systems employing MR dampers. It is demonstrated from the results that the control performance of the smart passive control system is better than those of the passive control cases and comparable to those of the semi-active control systems in the forced vibration analysis as well as the free vibration analysis, even though there is no external power source in the smart passive system.

  • In this paper, the feasibility of the high-performance damping device vibration suppression of stay cables has been investigated. The proposed damping system consists of a linear viscous damper and a scissor-jack-type toggle linkage. Since the mechanism of the scissor-jack-type toggle linkage amplifies the relative displacement of the linear viscous damper, it is expected that the capacity of the viscous damper used in the scissor-jack-damper energy dissipation system can be reduced without the loss of the control performance. Numerical simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the damping system employing the scissor-jack-type toggle linkage. Therefore, the proposed damping system could be considered as one of the promising candidates for suppressing vibration of stay cable.

  • In this paper, an experimental study was carried out for vibration control of cable bridges with structurally flexible characteristics. For the experiment on vibration control, a model bridge was constructed by reducing the Seohae Grand Bridge and the shear type MR damper was designed using the wind load response measured at Seohae Grand Bridge. The shear type MR damper was installed in the vertical direction at the middle span of the model bridge, and dynamic modeling was performed using the power model. The tests of the vibration control were carried out by non-control, passive on/off control and Lyapunov control method on model bridge with scaled wind load response. The performance of the vibration control was evaluated by calculating absolute maximum displacement, RMS displacement, absolute maximum acceleration, RMS acceleration, and size of applied power using the response (displacement, acceleration, etc.) from the model bridge. As a result, the power model was effective in simulating the nonlinear behavior of the MR damper, and the Lyapunov control method using the MR damper was able to control the vibration of the structure and reduce the size of the power supply.
