  • In this study, the 'force density method' for shape finding of cable net structures is presented. This concept is based on the force-length ratios or force densities which are defined for each branch of the net structures. This method renders a simple linear 'analytical form finding' possible. If the free choice of the force densities is restricted by further condition, the linear method is extended to a nonlinear one. The nonlinear one can be applied to the detailed computation of networks. In this paper, the general inverse matrix is introduced to solve the nonlinear equilibrium equation including Jacobian matrix which is rectangular matrix. Several examples for linear and nonlinear analysis applied additional constraints are presented. It is shown that the force density method is suitable for form finding of cable net and the general inverse matrix can be applied to solve the nonlinear equation without Lagrangian factors.

  • In this paper, we propose a frequency synchronization algorithm for S-DMT cable modem, which is practicable to the next-generation high capacity upstream physical layer in HFC networks. Analyzing several viable frequency synchronization algorithms of multicarrier systems, we proposed an algorithm using predetermined training sequence of repeated pattern in preamble field and residual frequency offset compensation with pilot signals. We verified that the simulation results of the proposed algorithm in AWGN showed good performance and suitability to the S-DMT upstream cable modem for fast frequency synchronization.

  • Recently, cable operators are providing broadcast and IP based services using Hybrid Fiber Coaxial(HFC) networks while securing frequency band for video contents and convergence services are becoming an important issue. But, HFC networks have difficulty of securing frequency band, because they are used for broadcasting service based on MPEG. Therefore, it is necessary to find out a method to go broadband. Radio Frequency over Glass(RFoG), one of the methods to go broadband, is advantageous in the sense that it can overcome bandwidth limit and simplifies the structure. In this paper, we find characteristic and standard of RFoG and services. And we also find advantage of RFoG by evaluating performance.

  • This paper discusses the economics of local loop architecture focusing on existing technologies, ADSL, HFC, and new one, PLC, and suggests a new modeling approach of access network system and the numerical equations. To modelize access network system and drive the numerical equations, we consider the double star and the tree & branch architecture and made block diagram of each access system. In addition, we introduce the density of subscriber as a variable and the equation of seeking the optimal number of cell in a service area. The economics of local loop architecture is analyzed in two ways, i.e. with and without consideration of the cost of cable and infrastructure. From the numerical analysis, we find that in case of not including the cost of cable and infrastructure, there is no much difference in the cost per one subscriber, while, in case of including it, there is remarkable difference among technologies. Therefore we conclude that the economics of local loop architecture is depend on the density of subscriber and existing network infrastructures.

  • S(Synchronous)-CDMA is a new cable modem technology applicable to the upstream channel for high speed multimedia communication using CATV networks. In this paper we analyze the transmitting and receiving process of S-CDMA scheme based on Terayon patent and derive bit error probability of S-CDMA and TDMA scheme in the $\varepsilon$-mixture impulse noise model which appropriately reflects impulse noise characteristics of upstream channel by using various parameters. This analysis results are a good match with the simulation results. We also compare Eb/No gain performance of S-CDMA with TDMA in 16, 32, 64, QAM.

  • Due to the rapid development of telecommunication industry, most telecom operators are investing to upgrade their access networks by using optical cables instead of copper cables. Building new telecom ducts for optical cable installation requires so huge capital expenses that most telecom operators need to remove unused copper cables in order to secure enough space to in-stall optical cables. In this paper, we will present a alternative method to extract copper from removed copper cables.

  • Internet Service Subscribers Network has a new role of providing the various multimedia services to the home. However, there exist several types of distributed subscribers network using Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), Very high-bit rate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL), and Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS). The efficient and concentrated network management of those several distributed subscribers networks with resources require the general information model of network, which has abstract and conceptional managed objects independent of type of network and its equipment to manage the integrated subscriber network. This paper presents the general Internet subscribers network model of the managed object to manage that network in the form of integrated hierarchy This paper adopts the object-oriented development methodology with UML and designs and implements the integrated subscribers NMS of cable data network and VDSL network as examples of the subscriber networks.

  • We propose and design the algorithms of symbol timing recovery, carrier recovery, and equalization for the receiver of S-DMT cable modem, which supports more channels and better symmetric mutimedia services over HFC network. We evaluate the performance of the concatenated entire receiving system of 16QAM, 64QAM in the mixed noise channel of AWGN, ISI and impulse. The result of evaluation shows those algorithms work correctly and designed S-DMT receiver has good performance. We also verify the designed system has excellent immunity against impulse noise channel of practical Cable TV networks by the result of simulation with the parameters of impulse internal $\varepsilon$ and noise power $\gamma^{k}$.

  • This paper describes the application scheme of resistive HTS-FCL(High Temperature Superconducting-Fault Current Limiter) on future new distribution system. Future new distribution system means the power system to which applies the 22.9kV HTS cable with low-voltage and mass-capacity characteristics replacing the 154kv conventional cable in addition to HTS transformer and HTS-FCL. The fault current of future new distribution system will increase greatly because of the inherent characteristics of HTS transformer/cable and applications of distributed generations and spot networks and so on. This means that the HTS-FCL is necessary to reduce the fault current below the breaking capacity. This paper studies the appropriate location, parameters and the influences of HTS-FCL on future new distribution system. Finally, this paper suggests the reasonable basic parameters of resistive HTS-FCL for future KEPCO new distribution system.

  • This paper introduces a new web based method to remotely upgrade firmwares of Cable Modems (CM) which are integral part in providing high-speed Internet access through Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) networks. Also, it discusses various practical problems arising in the upgrading process. Traditional upgrade has been performed by modifying the CM configuration fie. This paper shows a new web based CM firmware upgrade method using SNMP and MIB which greatly reduces upgrading time, cost and man-hour than traditional firmware upgrade methods. This method has been shown to be very efficient and practical. This method will make significant impact especially because tens of million cable modems are currently waiting to be upgraded soon to the next version from the current version.
