Reliability of the Impregnated Boron Compounds, Citric Acid- and Heat-Treated Samama (Anthocephalus macrophyllus) Wood against the Fungal and Termite Attacks

  • This research aimed to evaluate the durability of Samama (Anthocephalus macrophyllus) wood treated with boron preservatives, citric acid (CA), and heating against termites. Wood samples were impregnated firstly with 5% boron solutions, such as boric acid, borax and boric acid + borax combination at 1:1 (w/w). The second impregnation used 5% CA. The impregnations were conducted in a pressure tank at 7 kg/cm2 for 4 hours. After impregnation, the samples were heat treated at 80℃ or 160℃. All the treated and control samples were exposed to decay fungi, drywood termites and subterranean termites based on SNI 7207:2014 standard. The results showed that boron preservatives reduced fungal attacks on Samama wood. The combination treatment of boric acid, CA and heat treatment at 160℃ was also effective to increase the resistance of Samama wood against white- and brown rot fungi, and drywood termites. Heat treatment consistently improved the resistance of Samama wood from decay fungi.

  • 용융 점도 조절에 의한 나일론6(N6)의 melt impregnation공정에서의 용융가공 특성에 대하여 고찰하여 보았다. N6의 용융 점도를 조절하기 위하여 calcium stearate(CaST)를 윤활제로 사용한 결과, 1 wt$\%$의 윤활제의 첨가에 의하여 용융 점도가 감소함을 알 수 있었다. 아울러 폴리카프로락톤(PCL)을 N6에 반응 용융 블렌딩하여 N6의 용융 점도를 낮출 수 있었으며 phenyl phosphite(PP)와 diphenyl phosphite(DPP)를 첨가하여 블렌딩 시 상호에스테르 교환반응을 증가시켜 추가적인 용융 점도 감소를 확인하였다. 이러한 방법들은 N6의 고온 가공의 문제점으로 지적되는 열안정성 저하를 최소화하면서 melt impregnation 공정에서 필수적인 저점도 가공을 가능하게 할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Morphology of one Frontonia and two Spathidium ciliates (Ciliophora: Intramacronucleata) from Korea

  • Three ciliate species, Frontonia schaefferi Bullington, 1939, Spathidium curiosum Foissner, 2016, and S. muscicola Kahl, 1930, were collected from freshwater and terrestrial habitats in Korea. Their morphology was investigated based on live observations and protargol impregnation. Frontonia schaefferi was characterized by a cell size of $89-112{\times}45-53{\mu}m$ (after protargol impregnation) and three vestibular kineties. Spathidium curiosum was characterized by a cell size of ca. $125{\times}25{\mu}m$ in vivo and the unusual shape of the extrusomes. Spathidium muscicola was characterized by a cell size of ca. $135{\times}40{\mu}m$ in vivo and four to six macronuclear nodules. These three species are new records for Korea.

양이온 함침 활성탄에서의 저농도 이산화탄소 상온 흡착특성 (Ambient Adsorption of Low-level Carbon Dioxide by Metal Treated Activated Carbon)

  • Carbon based sorbents for $CO_2$ adsorption were prepared by impregnation with alkali metals ($Li^+$, $K^+$) and alkaline earth metals ($Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$). BET surface area of test sorbents was lower than the intrinsic activated carbon. In particular, impregnation of $Ca^{2+}$ or $Mg^{2+}$ resulted in lower surface area of specific adsorption sites than that of $Li^+$ or $K^+$. While the adsorption capacity for $CO_2$ was high in the sorbents containing $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$, strong interaction with $CO_2$ would cause to drop the capacity after regeneration. The adsorption was found high relatively in the flow with a high concentration of $CO_2$ and in a low flow rate. The adsorption isotherm for the present modified AC sorbents fits well with the Freundlich model.

  • A new shape-stable composite phase change material (PCM) have been produced via an easy and simple vacuum impregnation method. The composite PCM have been derived from almond shell biochar (ASB) as supporting material and capric acid (CA) as phase change material. Cost effective waste almond shells (AS) are renewable, eco-friendly, and rich in pores which enhance the possibility of CA impregnation. Therefore, in this study, three different ratios of CA (1:1, 1:2 and 1:3) have been incorporated in ASB to produce shape-stabilized phase change composites (ASCAs). Different techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscope (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) have been applied to evaluate the characteristics of ASCAs. The attained composite PCMs have exhibited shape stability with high latent heat storage, that makes it suitable for thermal energy storage applications.

아세트알데하이드 흡착을 위한 활성탄의 첨착 및 개질 효과 (Effect of Impregnation and Modification on Activated Carbon for Acetaldehyde Adsorption)

  • 본 연구에서는 공기청정기 필터용 활성탄의 아세트알데하이드 제거 특성이 금속 촉매 첨착 및 관능기 도입 방법을 사용하여 조사되었다. 야자각 차의 KOH 활성화를 통해 고 비표면적(1700 m2/g)과 미세기공이 발달한 활성탄을 제조하였으며, 금속촉매 첨착과 관능기 개질을 위해 침지 후 기공 내 건조조건에 따른 첨착 효율을 조사하였다. 제조된 활성탄의 물성은 비표면적 및 기공 분석(BET), 유도결합 플라즈마 분광 분석(ICP), 유기 원소 분석(EA) 및 푸리에변환 적외선 분광 분석(FT-IR) 등을 통해 분석하였으며, 활성탄 성능 확인을 위해 침지 농도에 따른 아세트알데하이드 흡착성능을 가스크로마토그래피(GC)로 분석하였다. 첨착용액의 농도가 증가함에 따라 금속촉매 첨착량은 증가하였으며, 비표면적은 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 각 금속촉매 첨착 및 표면개질 활성탄의 파과시험 결과 MgO10@AC, CaO10@AC, EU10@AC, H-U3N1@AC 조성에서 우수한 아세트알데하이드 흡착성능을 보여주었다. 흡착성능이 가장 뛰어난 MgO10@AC에 대해 파과 시간은 533.8 분, 흡착량은 57.4 mg/g으로 측정되었으며, 이는 활성탄에 나노 크기의 MgO 촉매를 첨착할 경우 아세트알데하이드의 카보닐기와 상호작용하여 흡착성능이 개선됨을 알 수 있었다.

Neuroprotective Effect of N-nitro-L-arginine Methylester Pretreatment on the Early Stage of Kainic Acid Induced Neuronal Degeneration in the Rat Brain

  • Objective : Kainic acid[KA] enhances the expression of nitric oxide synthase, increases nitric oxide[NO], and thus evokes epileptic convulsion, which results in neuronal damage in the rat brain. NO may stimulate cyclooxygenase type-2 [COX-2] activity, thus producing seizure and neuronal injury, but it has also been reported that KA-induced seizure and neurodegeneration are aggravated on decreasing the COX-2 level. This study was undertaken to investigate whether the suppression of NO using the NOS inhibitor, N-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester[L-NAME], suppresses or enhances the activity of COX-2. Methods : Silver impregnation and COX-2 immunohistochemical staining were used to localize related pathophysiological processes in the rat forebrain following KA-induced epileptic convulsion and L-NAME pretreatment. Post-injection survival of the rat was 1, 2, 3days and 2months, respectively. Results : After the systemic administration of KA in rats, neurodegeneration increased with time in the cornu ammonis [CA] 3, CA 1 and amygdala, as confirmed by silver impregnation. On pretreating L-NAME, KA-induced neuronal degeneration decreased. COX-2 enzyme activities increased after KA injection in the dentate gyrus, CA 3, CA 1, amygdala and pyriform cortex, as determined by COX-2 staining. L-NAME pretreatment prior to KA-injection, caused COX-2 activities to increase compared with KA- injection only group by 1day and 2days survival time point. Conclusion : These results suggest that L-NAME has a neuroprotective effect on KA-induced neuronal damage, especially during the early stage of neurodegeneration.

Removal of Phosphorus in Wastewater by Ca-Impregnated Activated Alumina

  • Phosphorus removal during discharge of wastewater is required to achieve in a very high level because eutrophication occurs even at a very low phosphorus concentration. However, there are limitations in the traditional technologies in the removal of phosphorus at very low concentration, such as at a level lower than 0.1 mg/L. Through a series of experiments, a possible technology which can remove phosphate to a very low level in the final effluent of wastewater was suggested. At first Al, Zn, Ca, Fe, and Mg were exposed to phosphate solution by impregnating them on the surface of activated alumina to select the material which has the highest affinity to phosphate. Kinetic tests and isotherm tests on phosphate solution have been performed on four media, which are Ca-impregnated activated alumina, activated alumina, Ca-impregnated loess ball, and loess ball. Results showed that Ca-impregnated activated alumina has the highest capacity to adsorb phosphate in water. Scanning electron microscope image analysis showed that activated alumina has high void volume, which provides a large surface area for phosphate to be adsorbed. Through a continuous column test of the Ca-impregnated activated alumina it was discovered that about 4,000 bed volumes of wastewater with about 0.2 mg/L of phosphate can be treated down to lower than 0.14 mg/L of concentration.

양이온 교환 및 염 함침을 통한 메조다공성 실리카와 유기-금속 구조체의 수분 흡착 특성 조절 (Control of Water-Adsorption Properties of Mesoporous Silica and MOF by Ion Exchange and Salt Impregnation)

  • $90^{\circ}C$ 이하의 저온열원 구동 수분 흡착식 냉방 시스템에 사용되는 흡착제는 효과적인 냉열 생산을 위해서 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.1 ~ 0.3에서 높은 수분 흡-탈착량 차를 보이는 것이 좋다. 메조다공성 실리카(MCM-41)와 다공성 유기-금속 구조체(MIL-101) 의 경우 최대 수분 흡착량은 많지만 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.1 ~ 0.3 구간에서 각각 $0.027{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$, $0.074{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$의 낮은 수분 흡-탈착량 차를 갖는다. 이 연구에서는 메조다공성 실리카와 다공성 유기-금속 구조체의 표면 성질을 조절하여 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.1 ~ 0.3에서 수분 흡-탈착량 차를 증가시켰다. 주로 수분 흡착이 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.5 ~ 0.7에서 일어나는 메조 다공성 실리카의 경우 알루미늄을 관능화 시킨 후에 염기도가 다른 여러 양이온($Na^+$, ${NH_4}^+$, $(C_2H_5)_4N^+$)들로 교환하거나 염($CaCl_2$)을 20 wt% 함침하여 각각의 흡착제들에 대해 $35^{\circ}C$에서 수분 흡착 등온선을 측정하였다. 양이온 교환 후 수분 흡착이 주로 일어나는 구간이 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.5 부근으로 이동하였으나 여전히 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.1 ~ 0.3에서 낮은 수분 흡-탈착량 차를 보였다. 하지만 흡습성을 갖는 염($CaCl_2$)을 20 wt% 함침한 메조다공성 실리카는 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.1 ~ 0.3에서 수분 흡-탈착량 차가 $0.027{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$에서 $0.152{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$으로 증가하였다. 수분 흡착이 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.3 ~ 0.5에서 주로 일어나는 다공성 유기-금속 구조체에도 염($CaCl_2$)을 20 wt% 함침하였더니 상대습도($P/P_0$) 0.1 ~ 0.3에서 수분 흡-탈착량 차가 $0.330{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$까지 증가하였다.

New record of four ciliates(Protozoa, Ciliophora) collected from rocky intertidal pools of South Korea

  • Marine benthic ciliates were collected from four rocky intertidal pools along the eastern and southern coasts of Korea from 2012-2013. Ciliate specimens were examined by observing living and stained cells. Four ciliate species were new to Korea based on morphological characteristics as follows. (1) Aspidisca polypoda (Dujardin, 1841): small bean-shaped (ca. 30 ㎛), eight conspicuous dorsal ridge, polystyla-arrangement of frontoventral cirri; (2) Epiclintes auricularis auricularis (Claparède & Lachmann, 1858): tripartite and auriform body (ca. 300 ㎛), 46 adoral membranelles, one or two frontal and 23 transverse cirri, 12 oblique fronto-midventral rows; 59 left and 71 right marginal cirri; (3) Pseudochilodonopsis marina Song, 1991: reniform body (ca. 50 ㎛), two obliquely positioned contractile vacuoles, seven left and five right kineties, five fragmented preoral kineties; (4) Dysteria semilunaris (Gourret and Roeser, 1888): oval-shaped (ca. 30 ㎛), two longitudinally positioned contractile vacuoles, conspicuous longitudinal grooves on both plates, four or five right kineties, one short row below frontoventral kineties.
