BACKGROUND: Soil acidification, which is known to be one of the reasons of forest decline, is associated with decreases in exchangeable Ca and increases in Al concentration, leading to low Ca/Al ratio in soil solution. As tree rings are datable archives of environmental changes, Ca/Al ratios of annual growth ring may show decreasing pattern in accordance with the progress of soil acidification. This study was conducted to investigate Ca/Al pattern of Pinus densiflora tree ring in an attempt to test its usefulness as an indicator of historical soil acidification. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three P. densiflora tree disks were collected from P. densiflora forests in Jeonnam province, and soil samples (0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm in depth) were also collected from the tree locations. Soils were analyzed for pH and exchangeable Ca and Al concentrations, and Ca/Al was calculated. Annual growth rings formed between 1969 and 2007 were separated and analyzed for Ca/Al. Soil Ca/Al was positively (P<0.01) correlated with soil pH, suggesting that soil acidification decreased Ca while increasing Al availability, lowering Ca/Al in soil solution. The Ca/Al of tree rings also showed a decreasing pattern from 18.2 to 5.5 during the period, and this seemed to reflect historical acidification of the soils. CONCLUSION(s): The relationship between soil pH and Ca/Al and the decreasing pattern of Ca/Al of tree ring suggest that Ca/Al of tree ring needs to be considered as a proxy of the progress of soil acidification in P. densiflora forest in southern Korea.
The present experiment was conducted to assess the effect of Buttiauxella-derived phytase in finishing pigs fed corn/soybean meal diets with an increase in the calcium (Ca)/total phosphorus (P) (Ca/tP) ratio and a reduction in net energy on the growth performance and nutrient digestibility on the finishing pigs. A total of 90 crossbred ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc) finishing pigs with an average initial body weight (BW) of 56.94 ± 2.43 kg were used for an 11-week feeding trial. The pigs were randomly allotted to one of three dietary treatments (six replication/treatment and five pigs/pen) in a randomized complete block design according to their BW and gender. Dietary treatments consisted of supplementation of phytase (0.05, 0.07, and 0.1% in the control, Trt1 and Trt 2 diets, respectively) maintaining the Ca/tP ratio (1.67 : 1, 1.84 : 1, and 2.19 : 1 in control, Trt1 and Trt 2 diets, respectively) and reducing the net energy by 1% in Trt1 and Trt2 diets compared with the control diet. The results showed that dietary supplementation with phytase in the energy-reduced diet had a similar (p > 0.05) effect on the BW, average daily gain, average daily feed intake, and gain/feed ratio of the finishing pigs. Also, there were no effects (p > 0.05) of treatment matrixes on the nutrient digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen calcium, phosphorus, and gross energy. In conclusion, the increase of phytase and Ca/tP ratio and the reduction of net energy in the corn/soybean meal diet resulted in comparable growth performance and nutrient digestibility of finishing pigs relative to pigs fed the control diet.
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates calcium (Ca) and phosphate transport. Secondary hyperparathyroidism usually occur in chronic renal failure (CRF), and it is a common complication of CRF in dogs and cats. Twenty one dogs with renal failure were enrolled in this study. Plasma Ca, inorganic phosphorus (iP) and PTH concentrations were measured. Dogs were divided into two groups by the ratio of Ca to iP (Ca/iP$\leq$1; Group I, Ca/iP$\leq$1.5; Group II). The PTH level between sexes ages were not significantly different. The PTH level and Ca/iP between two groups were significantly different (p < 0.0001). In conclusion, The ratio of Ca to iP may be considered as useful surrogator to predict PTH level of dogs with renal failure.

Three levels of boron (0, 30, 60 ppm) were supplemented in practical corn-soybean based starter and grower diets, containing either adequate or inadequate Ca or P. A total of 1,800, 1-day-old sexed broiler chicks were assigned to six dietary treatments and fed with the experimental diets for 42 days. Boron improved the overall feed conversion ratio, but increased body weight only at 21 days of age (p<0.01). Boron decreased feed intake in the case of feeding on a diet deficient in Ca and P, and tended to increase feed intake when birds received a diet adequate in Ca and P, signifying significant boron by Ca-P interaction (p<0.01). Mortality was not influenced by boron (p>0.05). Dietary Ca and P deprivation reduced body weight and feed consumption significantly, but did not influence the feed conversion ratio and mortality (p>0.05). Serum Ca level, ALP and ALT activities were not influenced either by dietary Ca and P deficiency or boron supplementation. Serum P content increased with respect to boron at 30 ppm. Bone breakage strength was not affected by dietary variables. Tibia ash, Ca and P were increased in response to the supplementation diet with 30 ppm boron, whereas 60 ppm showed no effect in most cases. Accordingly, the dietary boron supplementation of 30 ppm significantly decreased fecal Ca and P excretion, while there was a numerical decline in the 60 ppm boron as compared to the 0 ppm boron group. Data presented herein indicated that boron, either at the 30 ppm or 60 ppm supplementation level, was effective in conversion of feed to body weight, whereas only boron at 30 ppm contributed to the mineralization of bone thereby augmenting more Ca and P while excreting less through faeces.
Hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics with the Ca/P ratios of 1.62, 1.67 and 1.72 were prepared and their dissolution behaviors in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were investigated. It appeared that surface dissolution of the ceramics was initiated from grain boundaries after 3 days of immersion in water. Following 10 days of immersion, microstructural disintergration of HA was severs for non-stoichiometric compounds, I.e Ca/P ratios of 1.62 and 1.72. Notably, a micron-sized circular cavity similar to lacunae, which can be generally formed in osteoclastic resorption process, was observed.

The cation extraction and impurity separation were studied in order to investigate the recyclability of a slag produced from the steel refinery industry. Two types of slag (Slag-A, B) were collected and characterized in this study. The initial characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) confirmed the existence of various kinds of ions in the slag such as Ca2+ (30 ~ 40%), Fe3+ (20 ~ 30%), Si4+ (15%), Al3+ (10%), Mn2+ (7%), and Mg2+ (3 ~ 5%). Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) analysis on the extracted slag using 2 M HCl as a solvent indicated that a higher concentration of Ca2+ was extracted as the S/L ratio was increased. The Ca2+ extraction concentration were found to be 8,940 mg L-1 (Slag-A) and 10,690 (Slag-B) mg L-1 when the S/L ratio for Ca2+ extraction was 0.1. However, the extract was strongly acidic ( < pH 1) at 0.1 S/L. Also the other ions (impurities) were extracted simultaneously in addition to Ca2+. To increase the purity of Ca2+ in order to transform the slag to a high value resource, a pH-swing was conducted. The impurities tended to precipitate at higher rate as the pH was increased. Notably, the Ca2+ rapidly precipitated above a certain pH and at a pH of 10.5, while the selectivity of Ca2+ was over 99%. It is expected that the aqueous solution in which high contents of Ca2+ was selectively dissolved in this study would be suitable for the carbonation process for reducing CO2 and for the production of calcium carbonate.
To examine individual variation in drug metabolism catalyzed by flavin-containing monooxygenase (FMO), 179 Korean volunteers' urinary molar concentration ratio of theobromine (TB) and caffeine (CA) was determined. Their urine was collected for 1 hr (between 4 and 5 hrs) after they drank a cup of coffee containing 115 mg CA and analyzed by an HPLC system. The lowest TB/CA ratio obtained was 0.40, the highest ratio was 15.17 (38-fold difference), and the median ratio for all subjects was 1.87. The mean was 2.66 with 2.36 S.D.. In 134 nonsmokers, the mean ratio was $2.35{\pm}1.93,$ that of 51 males was $2.30{\pm}2.26$ and 83 females was $2.37{\pm}1.85,$ respectively. There was no significant gender difference in the obtained TB/CA ratio (Mann-Whitney test; p=0.518). There were no smokers among the 83 female volunteers. In the remaining 96 male subjects, the ratio obtained in 51 nonsmokers was $2.30{\pm}2.06$ and that of 45 smokers was $3.62{\pm}3.19.$ This indicated that the TB/CA ratio was increased significantly in smokers (p=0.007). However, when the TB/CA ratios (FMO activity) obtained in all 179 Korean volunteers are compared with the urinary concentration ratios of paraxanthine (PX) plus 1,7-dimethylurate (17U) to CA (CYP1A2 activity), there was a weak but significant correlation (Pearson's correlation coefficient test; $r^2=0.28,$ p<0.0001). This indicates that, although the urinary TB/CA ratio mostly represents FMO activity, minor contribution by CYP1A2 activity cannot be ignored. In conclusion, the FMO activity measured by taking the urinary TB/CA ratio from normal healthy Korean volunteers shows marked individual variations without significant gender differences and the increased TB/CA ratio observed in cigarette smokers may have been caused by the increased CYP1A2 activity.
the preliminary work on the prepartion of fine hydroxyapatite powder and the synthesis of dense hydroxyapatite ceramic from the powder were investigated for the development of artificial bone and tooth materials for implants. The effects of the process variables such as compositions of the raw materials the initial pH of the solutions and sintering temperature on the physical properties were investigated in order to determine the optimum conditions for the fabrication of tooth implant material. As the initial pH of the solutions was increased in the range of 10-11.6 the initial particle size of precipitates was decreased thus the sinterability of precipitates was improved. It was found that the composition of calcium rich of 1.75 in Ca/P mole ratio exhibited better sinterability and mechanical strength of the apatite ceramics for example the highest value of Vicker's hardness obtained from the compositions of 1.75 in Ca/P mole ratio was 764±30 Kg/mm2 compared to the maximum value of 600 kg/mm2 obtained from the compositions of 1.67 in Ca/P mole ratio.
The present notes summarize the results obtained from the effect of soil-solution ratio on pH values of soils having widely different physico-chemical characteristics. The pH was determined in deionized water N-KCl and 0.01 M $CaCl_2$ solution The results obtained are: 1. With deionized water, the pH values increase with the increase in soil-solution ratio. The increase is more in upland soils than in paddy soils. 2. With N-KCl solution, there is also an increase in pH values with the increase in soil-solution ratio but the increase is less than the corresponding increase with deionized water. 3. With 0.01 M $CaCl_2$ solution, there is practically no change in pH values with the increase in soil-solution ratio except for saline soils. 4. In case of saline soils, the pH increase even in case of 0.01 M $CaCl_2$ solution with increase in soil-solution ratio, the reason for increase may be due to decrease of electric potential by high concentration of salts.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of several substrates and ratio of NO3--N to NH4--N in nutrient solution on growth, yield and mineral uptake of sweet pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) in bag culture. The content of minerals such as P, K, Ca and Mg showed difference in concentration among media: P and Mg were the highest in vermiculite in vermiculti+rice hull, K in perlite+vermiculite and Ca in perlite+peatmoss; with the lowest in the single perlite medium respectively, Ca of mineral made fairly higest level in concentration compared with the others in all of the media. The concentration of mineral content was lower in the ratio of 8:2 than that of 10:0. Admitting that the pH made difference depending on the kind of substrates and ratios of NO3--N to NH4--N. The pH of 10:0 ratio in all the substrates was higher and more stable than that of 8:2. The range of EC in all the substrates showed from 1.78ds·m-1 to 2.10 ds·m-1, which was optimum range for growth of sweet pepper, and range of EC is larger in 8:2 ratio than that in 10:0 ratio. Plant height and stem diameter were nothing to do with the kind of substrates, but leaf area was the largest at vermiculite+rice hull of the 8:2 ratio, fresh and dry weights were heavier at peatmoss+carbonized rice hull, but were the lightest at perlite. All indexes related to the growth which had something to do with the kind of substrates higher in 8:2 ratio than those in 10:0 ratio. The number of fruit and fresh weight related to the ratio of the 8:2 were the highest as 17.5 at vermiculite+rice hull with 1,588g of fresh weight, while the yield from perlite was the lowest. The number of fruit was the highest as 16.4 at virmiculite+rice hull, yield was the higest as 1,394a at perlite+ peatmoss. The yield of 8:2 ratio at all substrates was higher than that of 10:0 ratio. Of the mineral content related to the plant part, K+ and Mg2+ were higher in concentration at leaf; Ca2+ were higher at root; PO4- was higher at stem and fruit; The content of mineral showed no difference between the ratio of the 8:2 and the ratio of the 10:0 with no regrading to the difference of mineral content among substrates; and K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ uptake of sweet pepper were higher at 10:0 ratio than that of 8:2; 2while PO4- uptake of sweet pepper was lower at 10:0 ratio than that of 8:2 ratio.
