Influences of Environmental Factors on Wheat Quality I. Relationship between Grain Yield and Quality of the Wheat as related to Cultivated Locations (재배 환경조건이 소맥품질에 미치는 영향 I. 지역별 수량성과 품질과의 관계)

  • The relationship between grain yield. protein content and sedimentation value in wheat were studied using 9 varieties cultivated at 8 locations in Korea. The grain yields of wheat varied widely, according to varieties and locations. Negative correlations between grain yield and protein content, and grain yield and sedimentation value were observed, while a positive correlation between protein content and sedimentation value was observed. Specific sedimentation values of soft wheats were below 4, while those of hard wheats were above 5. The intermediate varieties had sedimentation values of 4-5. This showed that specific sedimentation values could be used as a criterion in the classification of wheat quality.

  • Seven varieties of rice were cultivated in the field of BLRI of which three were native (Maloti, Nizershail and Chandrashail) and four were improved ($BR_3$, $BR_{11}$, Pasam and Mala). Yields of straw and grain were recorded and the chemical composition of straw was determined. Both the grain (p < 0.05) and straw (p > 0.05) yields were higher in the improved than the native varities. Relationships of straw dry matter yield with the hights of rice plants, tiller numbers, levels of N fertilizer and lengths of stover were found to be statistically insignificant. No significant differences were observed among the varieties in respect of NDF, cell soluble, cellulose and hemicellulose contents. However, modified acid detergent fibre and insoluble ash content were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in the local varieties. Except $BR_3$, the estimated ME content of straw was higher in the improved than the native varieties. In respect of yield, chemical composition and energy content improved straws were better and Pasam was the best.

  • This experiment was conducted to obtain the basic information of the major chemical components for breeding high quality varieties of sweet potatoes [Ipomoea batatas (L) Lamk]. Six recommended varieties were cultivated at the experimental plots of Hwasung and Suwon in 1992. Starch value. glucose, fructose, maltose, and sucrose content were analyzed with time intervals during storage period. Starch value of Shinyulmi was the highest among six varieties in both locations. Glucose and fructose contents were appeared wide variations in varieties and locations. Shinyulmi showed the highest maltose content and Yulmi had the highest sucrose content in two locations. Total sugar contents were higher in Shinyulmi and Yulmi. Starch value, glucose, fructose, maltose, and sucrose content were stable during storage period, however these were differed between locations.

  • To analysis of virus free sweetpotato effect, 5 virus free sweetpotato and virus normal sweetpotato varieties were planted in 5 different regions at 2010 year. The average yields of virus free sweetpotato are showed different results according to regions. Sinjami which cultivated at Iksan were increased maximum 68% compare to normal. However, Sinjami which cultivated in Hamyang were decreased yield 11% compare to normal. Analysis of tuber formation ratio of Sinjami, Yenhwangmi, Singeonmi which cultivated in Nonsan were decreased tuber number compare to normal. However, 3 varieties were all increased on Average storage root weight and yield of marketable storage root. In the results of analysis of marketable storage root according to cultivated regions and varieties, all varieties except Sinjami which cultivated in Hamyang were increased yield. Also, quality of virus free sweetpotato were enhanced 7 to 9 compare to virus infected sweet potato which showing average 3. Contents of starch between virus free and virus infected sweetpotato were not affected by virus. Virus free sweetpotato were more increased starch products according to increased total production yield. Also, $Brix^{\circ}$(%) was not showing difference between virus free and virus infected sweetpotatoes. In this experiment, Virus free sweetpotato are enhanced production yields and quality. Therefore, we suggested that virus free sweetpotato is one of the methods to reduce damage by sweetpotato virus.

A Diffusion of Transplanted Rice Varieties in Colonial Korea (일제시대 신품종 벼의 도입과 보급)

  • Colonialism heretofore described merely as a political economic phenomenon denotes another aspect, namely, an ecological imperialism that accompanies the biological implantation of human beings, crops, weeds, domestic animals, and pathogens onto colonized lands. Foremost, the Korean Peninsula during the colonial period served as a testing ground for the transplanted Japanese varieties of rice. Near the mid-1940s, the new varieties came to dominate over 90% of cultivated rice paddy. The speedy diffusion of transplanted rice was attributable to the aggressive promotion of agricultural institutions led by the Institute of Agricultural Tests and Experiments. Various policies and tactics were also instrumental to the nationwide distribution of new varieties, and they included naming recommended varieties, sponsoring rice contests, establishing crop inspection offices, educating young farmers at training camps, and publishing newsletters for agricultural societies. The forward and backward linkages that came along with the new varieties of transplanted rice helped to consolidate colonial status quo and to create hybrid agricultural landscapes in the Korean countryside.

The Development and Selection of SSR Markers for Identification of Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) Varieties in Korea

  • The groundnut or cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Korea consists of 36 domestic varieties which have been developed and registered as cultivars for the public during last 25 years. To screen and identify of Korean peanut varieties and genetic resources, we present a simple and reliable method. A methodology based on simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers developed and widely used for prominent gene identification and variety discrimination. For identification of those 36 Korean peanut varieties, 238 unique peanut SSR markers were selected from some previously reported results, synthesized and used for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Data were taken through acryl amide gel electrophoresis and changed into proper formats for application of data mining analysis using Biomine (all-in-one functional genomics data mining program). Consequently, twelve SSR primers were investigated and revealed the differences between those 36 varieties. These primer pairs amplified 27 alleles with an average of 2.3 allele per primer pair. In addition, those results showed genetic relationship by classification method within 36 varieties. The approach described here could be applied to monitoring of our varieties and adapting to peanut breeding program.

Studies on the Varietal resistance to the rice stripe virus disease (줄무늬잎마름병(호엽고병)에 대한 벼품종의 저항성에 관한 연구)

  • In order to develop an effective control measure for the rice stripe disease, methods of testing for resistance and selection of resistant varieties among the leading varieties were investigated. For use as a parent in breeding for resistant variety to the disease, total of 410 rice varieties were tested. 1. Disease occurrence was higher at group inoculation than that of individual inoculation in comparing the inoculation methods. 2. In both methods, Lacrose responded susceptible; Zenith and St. No. 1 resistant, and the rest moderate. 3. Suseptible symptom type A was prevalant among the susceptible varieties, while resistant symptom type C was abundant among the resistant varieties, There was no difference between the inoculation methods. 4. 410 rice varieties tested could he divided into 3 groups as susceptible (21 varieties), moderate (377 varieties) and resistant (12 varieties). Resistant varieties wers St. No. 1 and 2, Shin-2, Gulfrose Bonnet, Arkrose, Sun Bonnet, Zenith, Yeechunchilichal, Norm-24, Opaikjoke, Yangchubatchal and Nonglimana-1, Nams-97,-149, -159, -216. -265, Iri-243, -265, Kanchuk -5, -7, -8, -10, -41, -43, -47, -50, Suwon-56, -77, Norin-22, Cod-4. Lacrose and Chukna were susceptible. 5. There was slight differance in the disease occurrence in regard to maturing period. However late varieties seem to be more resistant than early or medium varieties. The medium varieties seem to be susceptible. Most of the introduced varieties from foreign countries and the upland cultivated varieties were resistant. 6 Among the leading varieties, Shin-2 in Kangwon-Do was resistant, Kosi in Choongchung-Do, was susceptible, aad the others were moderate.

2 Cropping systems using field crops in unheated plastic house at paddy field

  • In Korea, the single span unheated plastic house cultivated crops from autumn to spring of the following year, removed the plastic film and frame, cultivated rice, set up a plastic house again and cultivated crops. The crops in the greenhouse are utilized mainly for the production of leaf vegetables such as lettuce, leek, and fruit vegetables such as strawberry, watermelon, oriental melon, etc. and raising high income. Because, the production of these crops has characteristics requiring a lot of labor and it is difficult to produce horticultural crops at unheated plastic houses as the rural population ages. Therefore, we conducted a test to develop a crop planting system to cultivate crops in single span unheated plastic houses, although the utilization of labor is less than that of horticultural crops. The prior cropping cultivated three cultivars of sweet potatoes early, the second produced cultivated sweet potatoes, corn and soybeans. In the cultivation of the previous cropping, the sweet potatoes were harvested on the 113th day after planting on March 30th, the yield was 822 kg/10a for Pungwonmi, 1,377 kg/10a for Jinhongmi, 1,483 kg/10a for the Dahomi. Because of differences, the yield of Pungwonmi cultivar was less than that other cultivars and the yield of open field cultivations, we will expect further research. In the cultivation of the succeeding crops sweet potatoes were planted on July 27 and harvested 110 days later and investigated. The product yield of Pungwonmi cultivar was 1,024 kg/10a, and the Jinhongmi, Dahomi cultivars were not at economic level for sale and were necessary to review. In succeeding-crops, corn tested the Ilmichal cultivar, seeded on 27th July, harvested on October 11th. The day of silking was 45 days after sowing, the yield was 1,156 kg/10a, the goods rate was 100% level. The beans in the succeeding cultivation crop were sowed on 27th July, the early maturing of the varieties coming to Hwangeumol and Saeol cultivar, on 17th October, the late maturing soybean Daewonkong cultivar were harvested on October 21st. The yield of early maturing two cultivars was 214 kg/10a, Daewonkong was 257 kg/10a, and 100 seeds weight which were more than the early maturing beans were also heavy. When calculating these incomes price-wise according to the harvest time, we were able to consider the income in the order of corn, sweet potato and soybean from the second term crop. Various studies such as varieties, mulching method, moisture management, control environment management, etc. are considered necessary to develop cropping systems with sweet potato and field crops in future unheated plastic house.

Comparison of Physicochemical Properties and Cooking Quality of Korean Organic Rice Varieties (국내산 유기재배 쌀의 이화학적 특성과 취반특성 비교)

  • To satisfy the consumer's interest with safety and high quality of staple foods, the physicochemical properties and cooking quality of organic rice using hairy vetch in Korea were compared. Two Korean varieties, Hopyeong and Ilmi, two Japanese varieties, Koshihikari and Hedomebore, and newly developed in Jeonnam, Mipum which cultivated in the same region and conditions were used. Physicochemical properties and cooking quality were investigated. All samples were japonica type short grains and their length/width ranged 1.74-1.84. The protein, ash, and crude lipid contents were significantly different with varieties and the protein content of Korean rice was lower than that of Japanese rice, especially, that of Hopyeong was the lowest. Amylose content and initial pasting temperature were lower in Hopyeong and Japanese rice, but peak viscosities showed reverse trends. Swelling power at $80^{\circ}C$ showed higher in Hopyeong and Koshihikari. Color values, L, a and b were significant difference with varieties and color differences of Hopyeong and Huitomebore were lower than those of others. Texture properties, hardness and adhesiveness of Hopyeong cooked rice showed the lowest values, but adhesiveness of Japanese cooked rice exhibited the highest value. On sensory evaluation of cooked rice, glossiness of Koshihikari, intactness of Koshihikari, Huitomebore, and Hopyeong, stickiness of Koshihikari and Hopyeong showed higher values (p<0.05). The overall quality score of organic cooked rices decreased as following order; Koshihikari> Hopyeong> Huitomebore> Mipum> Ilmi.

Effect of the Domestic Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) Varieties on Seed Production (국내육성 톨 페스큐 품종간 생육특성 및 종자생산성)

  • A new tall fescue variety (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) named Greenmaster and Purumi were. In this study, we evaluated the seed production of new tall fescue domestic varieties were cultivated in Korea. Agronomic aspects of tall fescue domestic varieties were determined using seed production and forage nutritive value of straw at the National Institute of Animal Science from 2013 to 2014. The heading date according to the varieties displayed differences and domestic varieties showed enhanced disease resistance. The harvested seed yields of Greenmaster was 35% higher as 1,664 kg/ha and it's also yield of straw higher than that of Fawn. However, the nutritive value of both varieties was similar. The dry matter yield of Pumumi was 25% higher as 11,080 kg/ha. Accordingly, developed a new variety of domestic tall fescue with excellent environmental adaptability, aiming to make contribution to the vitalization of the Korean grassland industry.
