  • This paper described the effects of DME blended fuel on the engine combustion and emission characteristics of four cylinder CRDI diesel engine. Biodiesel was added into the DME fuel in order to improve the low kinematic viscosity of DME fuel. In this work, the experiment was performed under th various injection timings and injection strategy at constant engine speed and engine load. To maintain the fuel pressure and temperature, pressure and temperature controllers were installed to the DME fuel system. The results show that ignition delay was shortened and combustion duration was extended when DME blended fuel is supplied. Despite of slightly higher NOx emission with DME blended fuel at equal conditions in comparison with those of diesel fuel, the engine showed lower HC and CO emission characteristics.

  • This paper describes the effect of canola biodiesel blended fuel on the combustion and emission characteristics in a four cylinder CRDI(Common-rail direct injection) diesel engine. In this study, using the biodiesel fuel(20%,40% of biodiesel-canola oil and 80%, 60% of ULSD(ultra low sulfur diesel) by volume ratio with change of engine speed and injection pressure. The experiment results of increasing biodiesel ratio fuel show that NOx emissions increased. However, soot emission were reduced BC fuels compared to ULSD. Soot emissions largely increased at low injection pressure.

  • An experimental study was performed in order to compare with the case of using pure diesel the characteristics of combustion pressure and exhaust emissions when the engine speed was changed in a CRDI 4-cylinder diesel engine using biodiesel( Canola oil) blended and pure diesel fuel. As a results, the combustion pressure was decreased with increasing biodiesel blended rate when engine speed was 1,000, 1,500, 2000(rpm). but the combustion pressure of the engine speed 2,500rpm was increased with increasing biodiesel blended rate. The emission results show, that CO was decreased with increasing biodiesel blended rate and engine speed. The emission of $CO_2$, NOx, were increased with increasing biodiesel blended rate and engine speed.

  • Emission standards for passenger diesel engines are becoming more and more stringent. Especially, Europe started the regulation of nano-particles from 2011 with EURO 5b. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of fuel injection strategy on combustion and nano-particle emission in a small diesel engine. In this study, we conducted combustion analysis and measured both the weight of PM and number of nano-particels. At first, the optimum injection timing was determined with fixed engine operating conditions, such as engine speed, load, and fuel injection quantity. After that, the injection timing was controlled, and the effect of pilot injection was investigated. The number of nano-particles increased as engine load decreases, and it increased up to 10 times depending on the change of injection timing. The weight of PM emissions was increased at low load, and the PM emissions increased with increasing the number of pilot injections.

  • Recently, global warming has become severe, and regulation is established for carbon savings each field. its regulation is applied to various fields using IC engine such as automobile, ship, agricultural machine. Therefore engine block applied Common Rail Direct Injection(CRDI) technology, that carry out thermal-structure analysis to examine design. The thermal load about 900℃ by explosion was applied in cylinder. And pressure about 9 MPa(90 Bar) was applied to structure analysis. As a result, it was the highest at 185.99℃ at the top of cylinder. Static-structure analysis applied thermal load, that was shown maximum equivalent stress at 142.59 Mpa and Maximum principal stress 145.03 MPa, Minimum principal stress -149 MPa. When compare analysis results to material property, it design is safety structurally.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the characteristics of combustion pressure and exhaust emissions when the pilot injection timing and EGR rate were changed in a CRDI 4-cylinder diesel engine. The pilot injection timing and EGR rate have a significant impact on the combustion and emission characteristics of diesel engine. In this study, the pilot injection timing and EGR rate variation were conducted to 2000rpm of engine speed with torque 50Nm. Combustion pressure and heat release rate were decreased under high EGR rate conditions but increased under the pilot injection timing $20^{\circ}$(BTDC). IMEP and the maximum pressure in cylinder(Pmax) were decreased under the same injection timing with the increase of EGR rate. The NOx emission was decreased with increasing the EGR rate. On the other hand, in the same injection timing conditions, CO, HC, $CO_2$ emissions were increased with increasing the EGR rate.

  • The studies of the spray characteristics for a CRDI engine had been advancing by many researchers, because the performance and exhaust emission were significantly affected with the spray characteristics. But most experiments of the studies would be done at low ambient pressure conditions under 2MPa. In this study, injection rates were measured with Zeuch's method at various ambient pressures to 5MPa and a constant injection pressure of 130MPa. On the same conditions, non-evaporating spray images were taken with a high speed camera and analyzed carefully with Adobe Photoshop CS3. Macroscopic spray characteristics and breakup processes in the spray could be found from the examined and analyzed data. The initial injection rate, penetration, angle, velocity and breakup of the spray were practically affected with a variation of the ambient pressure, but the injection start time and injection period were scarcely affected. As the ambient pressure was higher, the breakup of a high density droplet region in the spray was happened slowly and the main position of breakup was shifted from a front of the spray to a upstream around a nozzle. The results and techniques of spray visualization and injection rate measurement in this study would be practically effective to study a high pressure diesel spray for a CRDI.

The pilot injection timing and EGR rate have a significant impact on the combustion and emission characteristics of diesel engine. In these experimental results, IMEP was shown maximum pressure at pilot injection timing BTDC$10^{\circ}$ combustion pressure and heat release rate were decreased in proportion to increase of EGR rate under the same pilot injection timing conditions. The NOx emission was decreased with increasing the EGR rate without influence on pilot injection timing. However, soot emission was reduced to a minimum at pilot injection timing BTDC$20^{\circ}$.

  • To meet the Tier-4 emission standard, a variety of combustion technology in the field of off-road engine has been applied in conjunction with the engine after treatment technology. In this study, as the basis study for applying VGT and HPL EGR to 3.6 L CRDi engine, exhaust gas characteristics and fuel economy characteristics are confirmed in accordance with VGT and EGR operating conditions. Consequently, in the EGR applicable conditions, 60% VGT vane duty condition was confirmed that the trade-off characteristics between NOx and smoke are advantageous. In addition, in view of BSFC, VGT vane duty is considered desirable to control at around 50%.

  • In this paper, we have estimated the performance of an overflow valve for EURO type CRDI(common rail direct injection) engine. In order to implement the overflow valve with friendly circumstance, it is necessity for considering spring load. Especially, the performance evaluation of diesel car with accuracy control will be considered a mileage improvement and circumstance regulation. In order to evaluate the performance of overflow valve, The leak test system checks the pressure, switching time and operating time under 3.0 bar below 100 cc, 3.3 bar among 150 cc and 200 cc, finally 4.0 bar upper 250 cc.
