  • In this study, the magnetic properties of CoCrPt films (far longditudinal recording) on a novel VMn underlayer were measured and compared with similar films on conventional Cr underlayers. It was found that the VMn film had (200) preferred orientation and the lattice constant was about 0.2967 nm, which is slightly larger than that of the Cr film, 0.2888 m. The grain size of the VMn film was 9.8 nm at 30 m thickness, about 39% smaller than that of a similarly deposited Cr. The CoCrPt/VMn films showed higher coercivity in comparison with the CoCrPt/Cr films. The coercivity increase is attributed to the increased Co (11.0) texture, improved lattice matching between Co (11.0) and VMn (200), and lower stacking fault density. V or Mn must have diffused into the CoCrPt magnetic layer uniformly rather than preferentially along grain boundaries. This reduced Ms at higher substrate temperature.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study to evaluate visual acuity and refractive state and measure and analyze the components of eye's optical system in children and teenagers. Methods: With subjects of 124 (230 eyes) children and teenagers who had no eye diseases, correlation between the correlation between refractive errors and component's of eye's optical system was investigated. The spherical equivalent power of cycloplegic clinical refraction or manifest clinical refraction(SE), corneal power(CP), corneal radius(CR), axial length(AL), anterior chamber depth(ACD) and axial length to corneal radius (AL/CR) ratio were measured and analysed. Results: the SE was negatively correlated with the AL(r = -0.80, p = 0.00), the ACD(r = -0.35, p = 0.00) and the CR(r = -0.11, p=0.00) and positively correlated with the CP(r = +0.11, p=0.00). The AL was positively correlated with the AL/CR ratio (r = +0.84, p = 0.00), the ACD(r = +0.47, p=0.00) and the CR(r = +0.38, p = 0.00) and negatively correlated with the CP(r = -0.38, p=0.00). The CR was negatively correlated with CP(r = -1.00, p = 0.00), the AL/CR ratio(r = -0.19, p = 0.00) and the ACD(r = -0.06, p = 0.39). The CP was positively correlated with the AL/CR ratio(r = +0.19, p = 0.00) and the ACD(r = +0.06, p = 0.39). The ACD was positively correlated with the AL/CR ratio(r = 0.53, p = 0.00). Conclusions: the highest change of refractive errors was shown that the AL/CR ratio was a very important indicator for diagnosing the refractive errors of the children and teenagers.

  • Toxic hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), was reduced to a less toxic trivalent chromium form by E. coli ATCC 33456. The suitable electron donor for Cr(VI) reduction was glucose. E. coli ATCC 33456 was more resistant to metal cations than other reported Cr(VI) reducing microorganisms. Cell growth was inhibited by the presence of Cr(VI) in a liquid medium and Cr(VI) reduction accompanied cell growth. With a hydraulic retention time of 20 h, Cr(VI) reducing efficiency was 100% to 84% when Cr(VI) concentration in the influent was in the range of 10 to 40 mg L$\^$-1/. Specific rate of Cr(VI) reduction was 2.41 mg Cr(VI) g DCW$\^$-1/ h$\^$-1/ when 40 mg L$\^$-1/ of Cr(VI) influent was used. This result suggested the potential application of E. coli ATCC 33456 for the detoxification of Cr(VI) in Cr(VI) contaminated wastewater.

  • Large drill bits may face high hardness ore and high working pressure when working. To optimize the use effect of large drill bits and prolong the use time, it is necessary to add a layer of pressure-resistant, wear-resistant, and low-friction coating on the surface of the drill bit. In this study, CoCrNiAlTi high-entropy alloy coatings and CoCrNiAlTi (70 wt%)-TiC (30 wt%) composite coatings are successfully prepared on Q235 steel by plasma spraying. The CoCrNiAlTi (70 wt%)-TiC (30 wt%) coating consists of FCC solid solution and a small amount of TiC phase. The effect of TiC on the composition phase, microhardness, and elastic modulus of HEA coating is studied by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and microhardness tester. The effect of TiC on the friction and wear properties of HEA coatings is investigated using a wear tester. By improving the process parameters, the metallurgical bonding between the coating and the substrate is well combined, and a coating without pores and cracks is obtained. The experimental results confirm that the microhardness, elastic modulus, and wear resistance of CoCrNiAlTi-TiC composite coating are better, and the friction coefficient is lower.

  • Cation exchange capacity of clay, white clay and zeolite was estimated by performing the powder adsorption test for 6 different heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) standard solutions whose concentrations were varied by 5,10,15 and 20 ppm. The adsorption rate of heavy metals decreased with increasing the concentration of standard heavy metal solutions. The adsorption rate of the clay and the white clay showed more than 80% for the all tested heavy metals except Cr and especially above 99% for the Fe and the Pb. The Cr adsorption rate of the mixture of the clay and the white clay increased, however, that of Zn decreased. The adsorption rate of Cr and Zn showed relatively lower values as compared with those of the other heavy metals because the cation exchange H$\^$+/ ions and heavy metal ions of the clay or the white clay were in competition at low pH region.

  • Purpose: To evaluate ultraviolet (UV) blocking characteristics of transparent and tinted ophthalmic lenses. Methods: The transmittance spectra of ophthalmic lenses were measured using the method suggested in ANSI Z80.1 standard. Transmittance percentage were calculated for each lens for UV (200~380 nm; UVA, UVB, UVC) and blue light portions (380~400 nm) of spectrum. Results: The results indicate that transparent plastic lenses with middle, high refractive index and tinted plastic lenses had superior UV blocking characteristics at UV radiation while UV blocker-untreated lenses such as crown glasses and CR39 did not. All except high refractive index lenses and anti-glare night vision lens was not effectively blocked blue light. Conclusions: Crown glass and CR39 lenses need to treat UV blockers to protect eyes from UV. Also, all lenes except high refractive index lenses and anti-glare night vision lens need to treat blue light blockers for protecting from blue light.

  • In this paper, we describe the dynamic tumble-stability analysis of a seabed-walking robot named Crabster (CR200) in forward-incident currents. CR200 is designed to be operated in tidal-current conditions, and its body shape is also designed to minimize hydrodynamic resistances considering hydrodynamics. To analyze its tumble stability, we adopt the dynamic stability margin of a ground-legged robot and modify the definition of the margin to consider tidal-current effects. To analyze its dynamic tumble stability, we use the estimated hydrodynamic forces that act on the robot in various tidal-current conditions, and analyze the dynamic tumble-stability margin of the robot using the estimated results obtained for the various tidal-current conditions. From the analyses, we confirm the improved tumble stability of the robot according to the movement of the tumble axis caused by the supporting points of the legs.

  • The elemental composition of electro-deposited black Cr solar selective coatings before and after heating in air by using secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) was investigated for optical property analysis. In addition, black Cr selective coating exposed by solar radiation for 5 months was compared with heated sample. SIMS investigation shows that $OH^+$ bearing ions were related to a near surface region of CrOH and CrO compound. The optical degradation of this coating after heating at $500^{\circ}C$ reveals that diffusion of the Cu and Ni elements in substrate material, the chemical interactions adjacent to the interface, and the interface width broadening.
