  • TCSC is a FACTS device that can control the active power flow and current of transmission lines by adjusting line impedances. In this paper, we study the effect of TCSC on power transfer capability. A static model of TCSC is implemented in the continuation power-flow(CPF) Program and the power transfer capability is measured using the CPF. The site of TCSC is selected to increase power transfer capability by the sensitivity information provided from the CPF. The effect of TCSC with various control mode is tested in IEEE New England 30-bus system.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for determining generator operation point for maintaining stability considering generator faults in Jeju-Haenam HVDC system. As the HVDC system consumes reactive power for the transmission of active power substantially, compensation of reactive power is essential. And the HVDC system is operated on frequency control mode. That is to say, the HVDC system almost manages system frequency. Therefore, we recognized that the Jeju system could be unstable if the reactive power consumed by the HVDC is insufficient when out-of-step occurs with large generators. When the solution of power flow analysis does not converge due to the unstable system phenomenon, we have difficulty in establishing countermeasures as the post-fault information is not available. In this paper, for the purpose of overcoming this difficulty in establishing countermeasures, we introduce the CPF(Continuation Power Flow) algorithm. This paper suggests an algorithm for calculating the output limitation of the generator to maintain the stability in case of generator fault in the Jeju system.

  • This paper proposes a framework for determining the minimum load shedding for restoring solvability. The framework includes a continuation power flow (CPF) and an optimal power flow (OPF). The CPF parameterizes a specified outage from a set of multiple contingencies causing unsolvable cases, and it traces the path of solutions with respect to the parameter variation. At the nose point of the path, sensitivity analysis is performed in order to achieve the most effective control location for load shedding. Using the control location information, the OPF for locating the minimum load shedding is executed in order to restore power flow solvability. It is highlighted that the framework systematically determines control locations and the proper amount of load shedding. In a numerical simulation, an illustrative example of the proposed framework is shown by applying it to the New England 39 bus system.

  • This paper proposes a SSSC(Static Synchronous Series Compensator) power flow model to be incorporated into power flow calculation for the steady state analysis of the power system. SSSC provides controllable compensating voltage, which is in quadrature with the line current, over an capacitive and an inductive range, independently of the magnitude of the line current. This SSSC model is obtained from the injection model for series connected VSC(Voltage Source Converter) by adding a constraint that the injected voltage should be in quadrature with the line current. In this paper the static model is implemented into the continuation power-flow (CPF) program. It is shown that SSSC has its intrinsic superiority over TCSC in controllable power flow range.

  • The saddle node bifurcation (SNB) and the distance voltage instability are valuable information in power system planning and operation. This paper presents a new efficient, robust and unified strategy to compute the SNB by the combined use of the continuation power flow (CPF), Point of Collapse (PoC) method, and the method of a pair of multiple load flow solutions (PMLFS) with Lagrange interpolation utilizing only their advantages: the approximate nose curves and critical loading are determined fast by Lagrange-interpolating two stable and two unstable solutions obtained by using the robust CPF and PMLFS; the exact SNB is computed by the quadratically converging PoC method. The proposed method has been tested on Klos-Kerner 11-bus, New England 30-bus, IEEE 118-bus and KEPCO 791-bus systems. The method is found to be so efficient that computation time for determining the SNB of the KEPCO 791-bus system is 17.82 sec by a notebook PC with 300 MHz Pentium processor.

  • This paper presents a sequential framework that calculates the total transfer capabilities of power transmission systems. The proposed algorithm enhances the Power System Transfer Capability Program (PSTCP) in conjunction with the Continuation Power Flow(CPF) that is used for steady-state voltage stability analysis and modified Arnoldi-Chebyshev method that calculates rightmost eigenvalues for small signal stability analysis. The proposed algorithm is applied to IEEE 39-bus test system to calculate TTC.

  • This paper deals with an application of optimization technique for available transfer capability(ATC) calculation. ATC is an important indicator of the usable amount of transmission capacity accessible by several parties for commercial trading. Sequential quadratic programming(SQP) is used to calculate the ATC problem with state-steady security constraints. The proposed method is applied to 10 machines 39 buses model systems. The results are discussed and compared to those obtained by continuation power flow(CPF).

  • This paper presents a centralized control algorithm for power system performance in the Korean power system using Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices. The algorithm is applied to the Korean power system throughout the metropolitan area in order to alleviate inherent stability problems, especially concerns with voltage stability. Generally, control strategies are divided into local and centralized control. This paper is concerned with a centralized control strategy in terms of the global system. In this research, input data of the proposed algorithm and network data are obtained from the SCADA/EMS system. Using the full system model, the centralized controller monitors the system condition and decides the operating point according to the control objectives that are, in turn, dependent on system conditions. To overcome voltage collapse problems, load-shedding is currently applied in the Korean power system. In this study, the application of the coordination between FACTS and switch capacitor (SC) can restore the solvability without load shedding or guarantee the FV margin when the margin is insufficient. Optimal Power Flow (OPF) algorithm, for which the objective function is loss minimization, is used in a stable case. The results illustrate examples of the proposed algorithm using SCADA/EMS data of the Korean power system in 2007.
