  • The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the positive effects of artificial ground greening on the reduction of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) which can help improve ecological functions in cities and mitigation of climate change, through quantifying $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration by the process of photosynthesis of some plants. Experiment of $CO_2$ uptake and evapotranspiration was conducted by measurement of $CO_2$ exchange rate using the infrared gas analyzer, for 7 month, growing season from May to November 2009, 2 times a month. The result was as follows; The $CO_2$ uptake quantity per $cm^2$ of Chrysanthemum zawadskii was the highest rate at $21.47{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$ and Poa pratensis was $16.20g{\times}10^{-6}g/cm^2/s$. The stronger was light of intensity, the higher were $CO_2$ uptake rate of most plants. In quantity of evapotranspiration, Poa pratensis was the highest rate at $8.75{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$ and Aquilegia buergariana was $8.66{\times}10^{-5}g/cm^2/s$. From this study, it is confirmed that artificial ground greening has capacity of absorption $CO_2$ and effects on improving urban microclimate.

  • To determine the biological effects of low-dose-rate radiation ($^{137}Cs$, 2.95 mGy/h) on EL4 lymphoma cells during 24 h, we investigated the expression of genes related to apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, DNA repair, iron transport, and ribonucleotide reductase. EL4 cells were continuously exposed to low-dose-rate radiation (total dose: 70.8 mGy) for 24 h. We analyzed cell proliferation and apoptosis by trypan blue exclusion and flow cytometry, gene expression by real-time PCR, and protein levels with the apoptosis ELISA kit. Apoptosis increased in the Low-dose-rate irradiated cells, but cell number did not differ between non- (Non-IR) and Low-dose-rate irradiated (LDR-IR) cells. In concordance with apoptotic rate, the transcriptional activity of ATM, p53, p21, and Parp was upregulated in the LDR-IR cells. Similarly, Phospho-p53 (Ser15), cleaved caspase 3 (Asp175), and cleaved Parp (Asp214) expression was upregulated in the LDR-IR cells. No difference was observed in the mRNA expression of DNA repair-related genes (Msh2, Msh3, Wrn, Lig4, Neil3, ERCC8, and ERCC6) between Non-IR and LDR-IR cells. Interestingly, the mRNA of Trfc was upregulated in the LDR-IR cells. Therefore, we suggest that short-term Low-dose-rate radiation activates apoptosis in EL4 lymphoma cells.

  • Me3NO selectively abstracts the proton from [IrH(CO)(PPh3)2L(A)]0.1+,2+ (1) (A: -CCPh, Cl-, CH3CN and L: CH3CN, Cl-, C1O4-) to give the trans-elimination products, Ir(CO)(PPh3)2(A) (2). The reductive elimination of H+ and Cl- from Ir(H)Cl2(CO)(PPh3)2 (lb) to give IrCl(CO)(PPh3)2 (2b) is first order in both lb and Me3NO. The rate law d[2b]/dt=kobs[lb]=k2[lb][Me3NO] suggests the formation of (PPh3)2(CI)2(CO)Ir-H-ON+Me3 in the rate determining step (k2) followed by the fast dissociation of both H-ON+Me3 and the trans ligand Cl-. The rate significantly varies with the cis liaand A and the trans ligand L and is slower with both A and L being Cl- than other ligands. Me3NO selectively eliminates CO from [Ir(H)2(CO)(PPh3)2L]0,+ (3) (L=CH3CN, C1O4-) to produce [Ir(H)2(PPh3)2L'(CH3CN)]+ (4) (L'=CH3CN, PPh3) in the presence of L. Me3NO does not readily remove either H+ or CO from cis, trans- and trans, trans-lr(H)(-CCPh)2(CO)(PPh3)2 and cis, trans-Ir(H)2Cl(CO)(PPh3)2. The choice whether hydridocarbonyls, 1 and 3 undergo the deprotonation or decarbonylation may be understood mostly in terms of thermodynamic stability of the products and partly by kinetic preference of Me3NO on proton and CO.

  • The electrochemical and thermal stability of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.16}Al_{0.04}O_2$ were studied before and after $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ coating. Different to conventional coating material such as $ZrO_2$ or AlPO4, the coating layer was not detected clearly by TEM analysis, indicating that the $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ nanoparticles effectively reacted with surface impurities such as $Li_2CO_3$. The coated sample showed similar capacity at a low C rate condition. However, the rate capability was significantly improved by the coating effect. It is associated with a decrease of impedance after coating because impedance can act as a major barrier for overall cell performances in high C rate cycling. In the DSC profile of the charged sample, exothermic peaks were shifted to high temperatures and heat generation was reduced after coating, indicating the thermal reaction between electrode and electrolyte was sucessfully suppressed by $Co_3(PO_4)_2$ nanoparticle coating.

  • In this study, it is the purpose to develope a cheap and compact repetitively pulsed $CO_2$ laser with pulse repetition rate range of 180 Hz. We used a SCR switched power supply as a high voltage pulsed supply, which is cheap and simple comparing to others. PIC one-chip microprocessor was used for precise control of a laser power supply on the control part. And the laser cavity was fabricated as an axial and water cooled type. The laser performance characteristics as various parameters, such as pulse repetition rate and gas pressure have been investigated. The experiment was done under the condition of total pressure of $CO_2, N_2$ and He from 4 Torr to 16 Torr and pulse repetition rate from 4 Hz to 180 Hz. As a result, the maximum average output was about 19.6W at the total pressure of 12 Torr and the pulse repetition rate of 180Hz.

  • Effects of $CO_2$ partial pressure($pCO_2$) on the characteristics of methane production rate and organic matter degradation in anaerobic digestion were investigated by using anaerobic chemostat type reactors at $35{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, at the HRT of 7days. The $pCO_2$ of the reactors was controlled in the range from 0.1 to 0.8 atm. Since the $pCO_2$ in an uncontrolled condition was about 0.4atm, $N_2$ was added for the reactors controlled of $pCO_2$ of between 0.1 and 0.4atm. At $pCO_2$ of 0.5 atm, the methane production rate was approximately 20% more that in an uncontrolled condition of $pCO_2$. Based on the carbon mass balance, it was concluded that methane production was related to the increment of removal organic carbon and consumption of $CO_2$. At $pCO_2$ of 0.5atm, the methane production by the increment of removal substrates increased 13.6%, on the orther hand, hand, the methane production by the conversion of $CO_2$ to methane increased 6.4%.

  • Kinetic studies and theoretical investigations were made to illustrate the mechanism of the aquation of cis-[Co(en)$_2$YCl]$^{r+}$ (Y = NH$_3$, NO$_2^-$, NCS$^-$, $H_2O$) in $Hg^{2+}$ aqueous solution UV/vis-spectrophotometrically. The aquation of cis-[Co(en)$_2$YCl]$^{r+}$ have been found to be the second order for overall reaction as first order for each of substrate and Hg$^{2+}$+ catalyst. The reaction rate was increased in the order of Y=NH$_3$ < NCS$^-$- < $H_2O$ < $NO_2^-$, which are neighboring group of Cl. The step of bond formation was found to be the rate determining one, because the net charge of central metal ion run parallel with the observed rate constant. On the basis of rate determining step, kinetic data and the observed activation parameters, we have proposed the Id mechanism for the reaction system. The rate equation derived from the proposed mechanism has been in agreement with the observed rate equation.

  • Molten iron with 2 mass % carbon content was decarbonized at 1823 K~1923 K by bubbling $Ar+O_2$ gas through a submerged nozzle. The reaction rate was significantly influenced by the oxygen partial pressure and the gas flow rate. Little evolution of CO gas was observed in the initial 5 seconds of the oxidation; however, this was followed by a period of high evolution rate of CO gas. The partial pressure of CO gas decreased with further progress of the decarbonization. The overall reaction is decomposed to two elementary reactions: the decarbonization and the dissolution rate of oxygen. The assumptions were made that these reactions are at equilibrium and that the reaction rates are controlled by mass transfer rates within and around the gas bubble. The time variations of carbon and oxygen contents in the melt and the CO partial pressure in the off-gas under various bubbling conditions were well explained by the mathematical model. Based on the present model, it was explained that the decarbonization rate of molten iron was controlled by gas-phase mass transfer at the first stage of reaction, but the rate controlling step was transferred to liquid-phase mass transfer from one third of reaction time.

  • Composite electrodes for redox supercapacitor were prepared potentiodynamically by the deposition of $RuO_2$ and the co-deposition of Ru-Co mixed oxide on the surface of single-walled carbon nanotube. Electrode of Ru-Co mixed oxide, in which Ru(13.13 wt%) and Co(2.89 wt%) were deposited on the carbon nanotube, exhibited a similar specific capacitance(${\sim}620\;F\;g^{-1}$) with $RuO_2$ electrode at a low potential scan rate($10\;mV\;s^{-1}$), but showed a superior one ($570\;F\;g^{-1}$) at a high scan rate($500\;mV\;s^{-1}$) than that of $RuO_2$($475\;F\;g^{-1}$). Such increase in the specific capacitance at high scan rate by the co-deposition of Ru and Co species was due to the structural support of Co species to provide the electronic conduction through Ru species.

  • Currently, automobile tax in Korea is imposed by multiplying the vehicle's engine displacement by a certain tax rate. However, the need for revision is being raised as it is pointed out that the current system does not reflect the immediate task of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Accordingly, this study focuses on the positive relationship between engine displacement and CO2 emissions, and seeks to calculate an appropriate automobile tax rate considering average CO2 emissions. To this end, first, we estimated the average annual CO2 emissions (kg/vehicle) for each engine displacement using the average CO2 emissions for each vehicle displacement as of 2020. Next, multiple scenarios were analyzed considering the standard tax rate at $75 per ton of CO2 emissions proposed by the IMF (2019). In particular, we compared the case of imposing a uniform carbon tax of $75 and the case of imposing a progressive tax based on CO2 emissions by displacement. According to the results, it was confirmed that the uniform tax rate proposed by the IMF is difficult to apply to Korea as it is due to the impact of a decrease in tax revenue, and a tax scheme needs to be designed appropriately considering maintenance of tax revenue according to the current automobile tax, greenhouse gas reduction effect, and automobile tax reform trends in developed countries. For example, in the case of the K3 (1,598cc) of Kia Motors, a representative compact car sold in Korea, if we compare the tax burdens for each tax scenario, the tax burden will be about 220,000 KRW under the current system, about 79,000 KRW under the uniform tax rate, about 83,000 KRW under the progressive tax rate, and about 240,000 KRW under the progressive tax rate similar to the UK tax system, respectively. In this way, this study identified the current statuses of automobile registration and tax in Korea, and automobile tax reform trends in major developed countries, and analyzed the impact of automobile tax reform considering engine displacement and CO2 emissions, focusing on the tax burden of the people.
