  • In the study, the effects of elevated $CO_2$ and temperature on the photosynthetic characteristics, chlorophyll content, nitrogen content, carbon content, and C/N ratio of Phytolacca insularis and Phytolacca americana were examined under control (ambient $CO_2+$ ambient temperature) and treatment (elevated $CO_2+$ elevated temperature) for 2 years (2008 and 2009). The photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and water use efficiency of two plant species were higher under the treatment than the under the control. The stomatal conductance of P. insularis was higher under the control, but that of P. americana was not significantly affected by $CO_2$ and temperature under the treatment. The chlorophyll contents of two species were decreased about 72.5% and 20%, respectively, by elevated $CO_2$ and temperature. The nitrogen contents of two species were not significantly altered by increase in $CO_2$ and temperature. The carbon contents of the two species were higher under the treatment than under the control. The C/N ratio of P. insularis was higher under the treatment but that of P. americana was not significantly affected by $CO_2$ and temperature. These results demonstrated that the physiological responses of P. insularis native plants might be more sensitively influenced by a $CO_2$-mediated global warming situation than those of the P. americana invasive plants.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of CO2 supplement on growth and quality in greenhouse lettuce cultivation. When CO2 was supplied at 1,500 ppm in lettuce cultivation, overall growth parameters such as number of leaves, leaf area, plant length, fresh weight, and dry weight were superior compared to those of the control group. While there was no significant difference in relative growth rate due to CO2 supplement, an increase in leaf area index was observed with CO2 usage. Furthermore, although there was no significant difference in the content of water-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin C, B1, B2, B5, and B6 due to CO2 supplement, the Vitamin B3 content in the CO2 treatment group was 0.5 mg/kg higher than in the control group. Therefore, the use of CO2 in lettuce cultivation resulted in increased yield and promoted growth, enabling early harvesting.

  • With increasing concern about global warming, CCS (Carbon dioxide capture and storage) has attracted much attention as a promising technology for reducing $CO_2$ emission. It is necessary to develop the cost-effective absorbents materials in order to rapid commercialize CCS technologies. In this work, he study for the promotion of absorption rate in $CO_2$ capture system using metal nanoparticle were investigated. Three kinds of metal nanoparticle, cobalt, zinc, and nickel, were prepared by wet and dry method and effect of preparation method on the absorption rate of $CO_2$ were compared. Among the tested using pH method, nickel nanoparticle prepared by wet method showed the most significant improvement of $CO_2$ absorption rate. In case that metal nanoparticle is applied to CCS process, it is expected to be more efficient in $CO_2$ capture process due to reduce the size of absorption tower.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the ventilation to remove gases, vapor and particles of environmental tobacco smoke(ETS) in a closed room. The ventilation rate choosed were 0.445 ㎥/min, 0.528 ㎥/min, and 0.625 ㎥/min. ETS components measured were total suspended particle(TSP), ultraviolet particulate matter(UVPM), fluorescent particulate matter(FPM), solanesol, carbon dioxide($CO_2$), carbon monoxide(CO), nicotine, and 3-ethenylpyri-dine(3-EP). The concentration of ETS components measured rapidly decreased as increasing ventilation rate, but the removal efficiency by ventilation was different from each ETS compounds. The $CO_2$, and CO, gaseous components of ETS, were dominant components to be removed from the room by ventilation. The ventilation with 0.528 ㎥/min for 1 hr was enough to remove over 99% of those gaseous components. Nicotine and 3-EP needed the ventilation for 2 hrs to reduce over 95 % of those components. As the same ventilation rate, 99 % of TSP and solanesol concentration were removed from the room within 2 hrs, UVPM and FPM concentration decreased 90 %.

  • Nano crystalline or non-crystalline particles have been widely used in various industrial area, such as ceramics, catalysis, electronics, metallurgy and optic device. In all applications, synthesizing the particles as small as possible and controlling the crystalline phase according to its purpose are necessary for the enhancement of processing performance. In some cases, non-agglomerated particles may be necessary for solving the packing problems. This motivates our attempt of controlling size, morphology, phase of nano titania and silica particles. If one can enhance sintering rate of small aggregates independently of collision rate, one may expect that original aggregates can be changed into volume equivalent spheres and thereby the decrease of collision frequency due to the change leads to much smaller rate of growth of the particles. This is the basic idea of our control strategy.

  • In this study, the effects of the current pulsing conditions, on the spatter generation rate during the $CO_2$ gas metal arc welding (GMAW) were investigated. Normally using the inverter type power supply, of which the welding current waveform was regulated to reduce the spatter generation rate, but in this study pulsing was imposed on the welding current. Observation of the metal transfer phenomena during the pulsed current GMAS indicated that the droplet transfer from the electrode via the short circuit transfer and the repelling transfer mode could be minimized by selecting optimum combinations of pulsing parameters, which include base and peak current, base and pak duration. It was also demonstrated in this study that proper combinations of the pulsing parameters led to reduce generation of spatters during GMAW shielded by $CO_2$ gas.

  • Under the projected global warming, release of carbon as $CO_2$ through soil organic matter decomposition is expected to increase. Therefore, accurate measurement of $CO_2$ released from soil is crucial in understanding the soil carbon dynamics under increased temperature conditions. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) traps are frequently used in laboratory soil incubation studies to measure soil respiration rate, but decreasing $CO_2$ gas solubility with increasing temperature may render the reliability of the method questionable. In this study, the influences of increasing temperature on the $CO_2$ capture capacity of NaOH traps were evaluated under $5{\sim}35^{\circ}C$ temperature range at $10^{\circ}C$ interval. Two closed-chamber experiments were performed where NaOH traps were used to capture $CO_2$ either released from acidified $Na_2CO_3$ solution or directly injected into the chamber. The sorption of ambient $CO_2$ within the incubators into NaOH traps was also measured. The amount $CO_2$ captured increased as temperature increased within 2 days of incubation, suggesting that increased diffusion rate of $CO_2$ at higher temperatures led to increases in $CO_2$ captured by the NaOH traps. However, after 2 days, over 95% of $CO_2$ emitted in the emission-absorption experiment was captured regardless of temperature, demonstrating high $CO_2$ absorption efficiency of the NaOH traps. Thus, we conclude that the influence of decreased $CO_2$ solubility by increased temperatures is negligible on the $CO_2$ capture capacity of NaOH traps, supporting that the use of NaOH traps in the study of temperature effect on soil respiration is a valid method.

  • PVDF is good material for a hollow fiber membrane with high porosity and excellent hydrophobicity. Asymmetric PVDF hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the Loeb-Sourirajan phase inversion method. Asymmetric PVDF hollow fiber membranes could be controlled in pore size and porosity using various additives(LiCl, ZnCl$_2$) and internal coagulants (water, EtOH/water, and DMAc/water mixture). $CO_2$removal efficiency of asymmetric PVDF hollow fiber membranes was 1.2 times high than that of commercialized PP hollow fiber membranes at MEA 5wt% solution. $CO_2$flux of asymmetric PVDF hollow fiber membranes was 2.5 times higher than that of commercialized PP hollow fiber membranes. $CO_2$removal efficiency and absorption rate of asymmetric PVDF hollow fiber membranes were 30 times higher than those of packed column at absorbent $H_2O$. $CO_2$flux of asymmetric PVDF hollow fiber membranes at MEA 5wt% solution was 48 times higher than that of pure water. In the case of MEA 5wt% solution used as an absorbent, the $CO_2$absorption rate and removal efficiency of PVDF hollow fiber membrane were 2.3 times higher than that of a packed column.

  • This research was carried out to elucidate the photosnthesis, respiration, and intercellullar $CO_2$ concentration of Kalopanax pictus leaves. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. The light compensation points in leaves of Kalopanax pictus seedlings were in the following order; the upper ($34{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$) middle ($29{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$) lower leaves ($24{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$). The light saturated points were at $800{\sim}1200{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in the upper leaves and $400{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ in the middle and lower leaves. At the light saturated points, the net photosynthesis rate was in the following order; the upper ($11.1{\mu}mol\;CO_2\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$) middle ($5.15{\mu}mol\;CO_2\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$) lower leaves ($4.01{\mu}mol\;CO_2\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$). The light use efficiency was in the following order; the upper ($0.041{\mu}mol\;CO_2\;{\mu}mol^{-1}$) middle ($0.040{\mu}mol\;CO_2\;{\mu}mol^{-1}$) lower leaves ($0.039{\mu}mol\;CO_2\;{\mu}mol^{-1}$). 2. In the upper leaves of Kalopanax pictus seedlings, the stomatal conductance increased continuously with increasing light intensity. In the middle and lower leaves, it was saturated at $400{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$. 3. In the upper, middle and lower leaves of Kalopanax pictus seedlings, the intercellular $CO_2$ concentration/the atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration ($C_i/C_a$) ratio rapidly decreased to $600{\mu}mol\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$, and then showed a constant values. 4. In the upper leaves of Kalopanax pictus seedlings, the photorespiration rate was $3.34{\mu}mol\;CO_2\;m^{-2}s^{-1}$ and $CO_2$ compensation point was $48.7{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$. Dark respiration rate increased exponentially with increasing leaf temperature, and the photorespiration rate was 2.4 times higher than dark respiration rate.
