This study proposes a route for surface modification for p-type cobalt oxide-based gas sensors. We deposit a thin layer of Ni on the Co oxide film by sputtering process and annealed at $350^{\circ}C$ for 15 min in air, which changes a typical sputtered film surface into one interlaced with a high density of hemispherical nanoparticles. Our in-depth materials characterization using transmission electron microscopy discloses that the microstructure evolution is the result of an extensive inter-diffusion of Co and Ni, and that the nanoparticles are nickel oxide dissolving some Co. Sensor performance measurement unfolds that the surface modification results in a significant sensitivity enhancement, nearly 200% increase for toluene (at $250^{\circ}C$) and CO (at $200^{\circ}C$) gases in comparison with the undoped samples.

In this study, we carried out a basic study for the development of optical transcutaneous $pCO_{2}$ gas sensor and analyzer using non-invasive method. The basic principle of $pCO_{2}$ measurement is adapted Beer lambert's law and embodied the system using NDIR method. This measuring system was composed of a IR lamp, a optical filter, a optical reaction chamber, pyroelectric sensor and a signal process. We measured $EtCO_{2}'s$ concentration in basis step instead of $pCO_{2}$ gas that can collect by inflicting heat in outer skin. We minimize the size of optical reaction chamber which takes up the largest volume, to make the portable sensor. We made optical reaction chamber in Si wafer using MEMS technology and the optical reaction chamber was shortened to 2 mm and we carried out an experiment. When we injected the $EtCO_{2}$ to the inside of the optical reaction chamber, we could confirm change of 4.6 mV. The system response time was within 2 second that is fairly fast.
An efficient carbon monoxide (CO) sensor was developed based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy)thiophenepoly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) modified with a new pyrimidine-fused heterocyclic compound, bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)dihydropyrido[2,3-d:6,5-d]dipyrimidine-tetraone (B2HDDT). B2HDDT remains stable in the polymer matrix through interactions with functional groups of the polymer. It created prominent sites that captured CO gas, and the experimental parameters, including the amount of doped B2HDDT in the PEDOT:PSS film, were optimized. The sensor probe was also examined to verify its reliability for detecting CO in the presence of atmospheric gases in a discriminating manner. NMR, AFM, and FT-IR spectra were obtained to evaluate the structure and morphology of the B2HDDT-doped PEDOT:PSS (PEDOT:PSS/B2HDDT) film. The content of 35 vol % B2HDDT (7.0 mM) in PEDOT:PSS provided the largest response factor (${\Delta}R/R_o$) for the CO gas. The sensor response was reproducible, with a relative standard deviation < 5% (n = 5). The detection limit was determined to be $0.44{\pm}0.05$ vol %.
Nanorod ZnO and spherical nano ZnO for gas sensors were prepared by hydrothermal reaction method and hydrazine method, respectively. The nano-ZnO gas sensors were fabricated by a screen printing method on alumina substrates. The gas sensing properties were investigated for hydrocarbon gas. The effects of Co concentration on the structural and morphological properties of the nano ZnO:Co were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. XRD patterns revealed that nanorod and spherical ZnO:Co with a wurtzite structure were grown with (100), (002), (101) peaks. The sensitivity of nanorod and spherical ZnO:Co sensors was measured for 5 ppm $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas at room temperature by comparing the resistance in air with that in target gases. The highest sensitivity to the $CH_4$ and $CH_3CH_2CH_3$ gas of spherical nano ZnO:Co sensors was observed at Co 6 wt%. The spherical nano ZnO:Co sensor exhibited a higher sensitivity to hydrocarbon gas than nanorod ZnO.
Gas identification techniques using pattern recognition methods were developed from four micro-electronic gas sensors for noxious gas mixture analysis. The target gases for the air quality monitoring inside vehicles were two exhaust gases, carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), and two odor gases, ammonia (NH3) and formaldehyde (HCHO). Four MEMS gas sensors with sensing materials of Pd-SnO2 for CO, In2O3 for NOX, Ru-WO3 for NH3, and hybridized SnO2-ZnO material for HCHO were fabricated. In six binary mixed gas systems with oxidizing and reducing gases, the gas sensing behaviors and the sensor responses of these methods were examined for the discrimination of gas species. The gas sensitivity data was extracted and their patterns were determined using principal component analysis (PCA) techniques. The PCA plot results showed good separation among the mixed gas systems, suggesting that the gas mixture tests for noxious gases and their mixtures could be well classified and discriminated changes.
Thick film formaldehyde (HCHO) gas sensors were fabricated by using $La_1_{-x}Sr_xMO_3$ (M= Fe, Co, Mn) ceramics. The powders of $La_1_{-x}Sr_xMO_3$ (M=Fe, Co, Mn) were synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction method. By using the $La_1_{-x}Sr_xMO_3$ (M=Fe, Co, Mn) paste, the thick-film formaldehyde sensors were prepared on the alumina substrate by silkscreen printing method. The experimental results revealed that $La_1_{-x}Sr_xMO_3$ (M= Fe, Co, Mn) ceramic powder has a perovskite structure and the thick-film sensor shows excellent gas-sensing characteristics to formaldehyde gas (sensitivity of $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}FeO_3$, S= 14.7 at operating temperature of $150^{\circ}C$ in 50 ppm HCHO ambient).
A gas sensor, comprised of both ZnO and $PdCl_2$ powders, has been developed to sense the CO gas of low concentration (100 ppm). When the weight ratio of ZnO/$PdCl_2$ element sintered at $600^{\circ}C$ was 99.5/0.5, the maximum sensitivity to CO gas was obtained at the operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. Also, the response characteristics of this element were examined, and then the response time was decreased from 90 to 45 sees, with operating temperature increase in the range of $100-400^{\circ}C$.
We investigated the effects of Co doping on the NO gas sensing characteristics of ZnO-carbon nanotube (ZnO-CNT) layered composites fabricated by coaxial coating of single-walled CNTs with ZnO using pulsed laser deposition. Structural examinations clearly confirmed a distinct nanostructure of the CNTs coated with ZnO nanoparticles of an average diameter as small as 10 nm and showed little influence of doping 1 at.% Co into ZnO on the morphology of the ZnO-CNT composites. It was found from the gas sensing measurements that 1 at.% Co doping into ZnO gave rise to a significant improvement in the response of the ZnO-CNT composite sensor to NO gas exposure. In particular, the Co-doped ZnO-CNT composite sensor shows a highly sensitive and fast response to NO gas at relatively low temperatures and even at low NO concentrations. The observed significant improvement of the NO gas sensing properties is attributed to an increase in the specific surface area and the role as a catalyst of the doped Co elements. These results suggest that Co-doped ZnOCNT composites are suitable for use as practical high-performance NO gas sensors.
Nondispersive infrared CO2 gas sensor was developed after the simulation of optical cavity structure and assembling the optical components: IR source, concave reflectors, Fresnel lens, a hollow disk, and IR detectors. By placing a hollow disk in front of reference IR detector, the output voltages are almost constant value, near to 70.2 mV. The absorbance of IR light, Fa, shows the second order of polynomial according to ambient temperatures at 1,500 ppm. The differential output voltages and the absorbance of IR light give a higher accuracy in estimations of CO2 concentrations with less than ± 1.5 % errors. After implementing the parameters that are dependent upon the ambient temperatures in microcontroller unit (MCU), the measured CO2 concentrations show high accuracies (less than ± 1.0 %) from 281 K to 308 K and the time constant of developed sensor is about 58 sec at 301 K. Even though the estimation errors are relatively high at low concentration, the developed sensor is competitive to the commercial product with a high accuracy and the stability.

A small-sized gas identification system has been fabricated and characterized using an integrated gas sensor array and artificial neural-network. The sensor array consists of four thick-film oxide semiconductor gas sensors whose sensing layers are $In_{2}O_{3}-Sb_{2}O_{5}-Pd-doped\;SnO_2$ + Pd-coated layer, $La_{2}O_{5}-PdCl_{2}-doped\;SnO_2,\;WO_{3}-doped\;SnO_{2}$ + Pt-coated layer and $ThO_{2}-V_{2}O_{5}-PdCl_{2}\;doped\;SnO_{2}$. The small-sized gas identification instrument is composed of a GMS 81504 containing an internal ROM (4k bytes), a RAM (128 bytes) and four-channel AD converter as MPU, LEDs for displaying alarm conditions for three gases (liquefied petroleum gas: LPG, liquefied natural gas: LNG and carbon monoxide: CO) and interface circuits for them. The instrument has been used to identify alarm conditions for three gases among the real circumstances and the identification has been successfully demonstrated.
