The effect of improvement on the surface morphology of screen-printed carbon nanotube (CND) films was studied by using the optically clear poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer for surface treatment. After the PDMS activation treatment was applied to the diode-type CNT cathode, the entangled carbon nanotube (CNT) bundles were broken up into individual free standing nanotubes to remarkably improve the field-emission characteristics over the as-deposited CNT film. Also, the cathode film morphology of a top gated triode-type structure can be treated by using the proposed surface treatment technique, which is a low-cost process, simple process. The relative uniform emission image showed high brightness with a high anode current. This result shows the possibility of using this technique for surface treatment of large-size field emission displays (FEDs) in the future.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been spotlighted as one of promising field emission displays(FEDs). For the first time, to authors knowledge, we have developed the 9" color CNT-FEDs with the resolution of 240x576 lines. The 9" CNT-FEDs with diode-type and triode-type structures are presented. The well-dispersed CNT paste was squeezed onto the metal-patterned cathode glass. For the anode plate, the Y2O2S:Eu, ZnS:Ag,Cl low-voltage phosphors were printed for red, green, and blue colors, respectively. The vacuum-packaged panel maintained the vacuum level of 1x10-7 Torr. The uniform moving images vacuum-packaged panel maintained the vacuum level of 1x10-7 Torr. The uniform moving images were demonstrated at 2 V/um. High brightness of 800, 200, and 150cd/m2 was observed on the green, red, and blue phosphors at V/um, respectively. Field emission characteristics of a triode-type CNT-FED were simulated using a finite element method. the resultant field strength on the cathode was modulated by gate bias and emitted electrons were focused on the anode. A relatively uniform emission image was experimentally achieved at the 800V anode. A relatively uniform emission image was experimentally achieved at the 800V anode and the 50-180 V gate biases. Energy distribution of electrons emitted from CNTs was measured using an energy analyzer. The maximum peak of energy curve corresponded to the Fermi energy level of CNTs. The whole fabrication processed of CNT-FEDs were fully scalable and reproducible. Our CNT-FEDs has demonstrated the high potential of large-area and full-color applications with very low cost fabrication and low power consumption.

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary cashew nut testa (CNT) as an alternative feed ingredient to wheat bran on reproductive performance, litter performance, milk composition, and blood profiles of gestating sows. Methods: Forth multiparous sows ($Yorkshire{\times}Landrace$) were fed experimental diets starting at 35 days of pregnancy and an initial average body weight (BW) of $211.53{\pm}8.86kg$. Each sow was assigned to a treatment based on BW, backfat thickness (BF) and parity with 10 sows per treatment. Treatments were as follows: i) corn-soybean meal based diet with 6% of wheat bran (C0); ii) basal diet with 2% of CNT and 4% of wheat bran (C2); iii) basal diet with 4% of CNT and 2% of wheat bran (C4); and iv) basal diet with 6% of CNT (C6). Results: There were no statistically significant differences in BW and BF of gestating sows throughout the experimental period. However, changes in BF (p = 0.09) and the daily feed intake of sows (p = 0.09) tended to linearly increase during the lactation period. The weaning to estrus interval (WEI) showed a quadratic response to CNT treatment (p = 0.02), and the C2 diet showed the shortest WEI. Litter birth weight (p = 0.04) and piglet birth weight (p = 0.06) were linearly decreased with increase in CNT. Furthermore, there had no significant differences in piglet weight and litter weight in 21 day. Insulin concentration at day 70 of gestation was linearly reduced with increasing CNT level in diets (p = 0.03). Conclusion: When 6% CNT replaced wheat bran in gestating sow diets, there were no negative effects on sow performance, but litter birth weight and piglet birth weight were decreased when CNT level increased in gestating sow diets.
We report a new fabrication process for high performance triode type CNT field emitters and their superior electrical properties. The CNT-based triode-type field emitter structure was fabricated by the conventional semiconductor processes. The keys of the fabrication process are spin-on-glass coating and trim-and-leveling of the carbon nanotubes grown in trench structures by employing a chemical mechanical polishing process. They lead to strong adhesion and a uniform distance from the carbon nanotube tips to the electrode. The measured emission property of the arrays showed a remarkably uniform and high current density. The gate leakage current could be remarkably reduced by coating of thin $SiO_{2}$ insulating layer over the gate metal. The field enhancement factor(${\beta}$) and emission area(${\alpha}$) were calculated from the F-N plot. This process can be applicable to fabrication of high power CNT vacuum transistors with good electrical performance.
This study investigates the effect of $NH_3$ gas upon the growth of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using thermal chemical vapor deposition. It is considered that the CNT synthesis occurs mainly through two steps, clustering of catalyst particles and subsequent growth of CNTs. We thus introduced $NH_3$ during either an annealing or growth step. When $NH_3$ was fed only during annealing, CNTs grew longer and more highly crystalline with diameters unchanged. An addition of $NH_3$ during growth, however, resulted in shorter CNTs with lower crystallinity while increased their diameters. Vertically aligned, highly populated CNT samples showed poor field emission characteristics, leading us to apply post-treatments onto the CNT surface. The CNTs were treated by adhesive tapes or etched back by dc plasma of $N_2$ to reduce the population density and the radius of curvatures of CNTs. We discuss the morphological changes of CNTs and their field emission properties upon surface treatments.

For the application of field emission display (FED), it is essential to develop a carbon nanotube (CNT) cathode with high emission current density. In this study, we developed and demonstrated a post-heat treatment (PHT) process to improve field emission properties of CNT cathodes. Since the PHT is intended to burn out organic materials covering the CNTs, the PHT was carried out by heating samples at a high temperature in an atmosphere. The PHT process is applied for samples processed by surface treatment with an adhesive tape. Compared to samples prior to the PHT, samples after the PHT at $360^{\circ}C$ showed about 17% improvement in emission current density. The major reason for the increased current density is mainly the increased aspect ratio of the CNTs because of the removal of the adhesive organic residues covering the CNTs, which were attached on the CNT surfaces during the surface treatment using the adhesive taping method.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) belong to an ideal material for field emitters because of their superior electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties together with unique geometric features. Several applications of CNTs to field emitters have been demonstrated in electron emission devices such as field emission display (FED), backlight unit (BLU), X-ray source, etc. In this study, we fabricated a CNT cathode by using filtration processes. First, an aqueous CNT solution was prepared by ultrasonically dispersing purified single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) in deionized water with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The aqueous CNT solution in a milliliter or even several tens of micro-litters was filtered by an alumina membrane through the vacuum filtration, and an ultra-thin CNT film was formed onto the alumina membrane. Thereafter, the alumina membrane was solvated by acetone, and the floating CNT film was easily transferred to indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrate in an area defined as 1 cm with a film mask. The CNT film was subjected to an activation process with an adhesive roller, erecting the CNTs up to serve as electron emitters. In order to measure their luminance characteristics, an ITO-coated glass substrate having phosphor was employed as an anode plate. Our field emitter array (FEA) was fairly transparent unlike conventional FEAs, which enabled light to emit not only through the anode frontside but also through the cathode backside, where luminace on the cathode backside was higher than that on the anode frontside. Futhermore, we added a reflecting metal layer to cathode or anode side to enhance the luminance of light passing through the other side. In one case, the metal layer was formed onto the bottom face of the cathode substrate and reflected the light back so that light passed only through the anode substrate. In the other case, the reflecting layer coated on the anode substrate made all light go only through the cathode substrate. Among the two cases, the latter showed higher luminance than the former. This study will discuss the morphologies and field emission characteristics of CNT emitters according to the experimental parameters in fabricating the lamps emitting light on the both sides or only on the either side.
The active-matrix field emission display (AMFED) was fabricated by integrating carbon nanotube emitters on a-Si thin-film transistors. Also, the tapered macro-gate was adopted for high immunity to a high anode voltage and strong electron beam focusing. The fabricated AMFED was successfully driven with a low voltage of below 15 V.
We mainly report recent progress in backlight unit (BLU) for liquid crystal display (LCD) using printed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) including top-gate and lateral gate structures. Lighting performances of CNTBLU and longevity of printed CNT emitters are intensively discussed. Selected issues related with field emission display (FED) using the same emitters also are presented.
In this study, the vertical aligned carbon nanotubes was synthesized by DC bias-assisted Inductively Coupled Plasma Hot-Filament Chemical Vapor Deposition (ICPHFCVD). The substrate used CNTs growth was Ni(300 ${\AA}$)/Cr(200 ${\AA}$)-deposited one on glass by RF magnetron sputtering. R-F, DC bias and filament power during the growth process were 150 W, 80 W, 7∼8 A, respectively. The grown CNTs showed hollow structure and multi-wall CNTs. The top of grown CNT was found to Ni-tip that the CNT end showed to metaltip. The graphitization and field emission properties of grown was better than grown CNTs by ICPCVD. The turn-on voltage of CNT grown by DC bias-assisted ICPHFCVD showed about 3 V/${\mu}m$.
