  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with few defects and very small amount of amorphous carbon coating have been synthesized by catalytic decomposition of methane in $H_2$ over well-dispersed metal particles supported on MgO. The yield of SWCNTs was estimated to be 88.5% and the purities of SWCNTs thus obtained were more than 90%. Peak of the radial breathing mode in the Raman spectrum demonstrated that the diameters of synthesized CNTs are in the range 0.4-2.0 nm. Our results also indicated that MgO support materials are useful to a large-scale synthesis of high-quality SWCNTs. Increasing temperature could remarkably increase the yield and also improve the quality of SWCNTs from catalytic decomposition of methane. The morphologies and microstructures of the synthesized carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were coated with undoped zinc oxide (ZnO) or 5 wt% gallium-incorporated ZnO (GZO) using various deposition conditions. The CNTs were directly grown on conical-type tungsten substrates at $700^{\circ}C$ using inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition. The pulsed laser deposition technique was used to deposit the ZnO and GZO thin films with very low stress. Field-emission scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy were used to monitor the variations in the morphology and microstructure of CNTs prior to and after ZnO or GZO coating. The formation of ZnO and GZO films on CNTs was confirmed using energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy. In comparison to the as-grown (uncoated) CNT emitter, the CNT emitter that was coated with a thin (10 nm) GZO film showed remarkably improved field emission characteristics, such as the emission current of $325\;{\mu}A$ at 1 kV and the threshold field of $1.96\;V/{\mu}m$ at $0.1\;{\mu}A$, and it also exhibited the highly stable operation of emission current up to 40 h.

  • With recent innovations in the ICT industry, the demand for wearable sensing devices to recognize and respond to biological signals has increased. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) spacer fabric was embedded in a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) dispersive solution through a simple penetration process to develop a monolayer piezoresistive pressure sensor. To induce electrical conductivity in the 3D spacer fabric, samples were immersed in the SWCNT dispersive solution and dried. To determine the electrical properties of the impregnated specimen, a universal testing machine and multimeter were used to measure the resistance of the pressure change. Moreover, to examine the changes in the electrical properties of the sensor, its performance was evaluated by varying the concentration, number of penetrations, and thickness of the specimen. Samples that penetrated twice in the SWCNT distributed solution of 0.1 wt% showed the best performance as sensors. The 7-mm thick sensors showed the highest GF, and the 13-mm thick sensors showed the widest operating range. This study confirms the effectiveness of the simple process of fabricating smart textile sensors comprising 3D spacer fabrics and the excellent performance of the sensors.

  • This paper presents fabrication method of nano-structured PMMA substrates as well as evaluations of their optical transmittance. For anti-reflective surface, surface coating method had been conventionally used. However, it requires high cost, complicated process and post-processing times. In this study, we suggested the fabrication method of anti-reflective surface by the hot embossing process. Using the nano patterned master fabricated by anodic aluminum oxidation process. Anodic aluminum oxide(AAO) is widely used as templates or a molds for various applications such as carbon nano tube (CNT), nano rod and nano dots. Anodic aluminum oxidation process provides highly ordered regular nano-structures on the large area, while conventional pattering methods such as E-beam and FIB can fabricate arbitrary nano-structures on small area. We fabricated a porous alumina hole array with various inter-pore distance and pore diameter. In order to replicate nano-structures using alumina nano hole array patterns, we have carried out hot-embossing process with PMMA substrates. Finally the nano-structured PMMA substrates were fabricated and their optical transmittances were measured in order to evaluate the charateristivs of anti-reflection. Anti-reflective structure can be applied to various displays and automobile components.

  • In this study, we investigate the effects of corona-discharge pre-treatment on the properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) which are used as flexible transparent electrodes. The CNTs are deposited on PET (polyethylene terephthalate) substrates using a spray coating method. Prior to the deposition of CNTs, the PET substrates are corona-treated by varying the feeding directions of the PET substrate and the numbers of treatments. The variations in the surface morphologies and roughnesses of the PET substrates due to corona-treatment are characterized via atomic force microscopy (AFM). Dynamic contact angles (DCAs) of the corona-treated PET substrates are measured and analyzed as functions of the treatment conditions. Also, the sheet resistances and visible-range transmittances of the CNTs deposited on PET substrates are measured before and after bending test. The experimental results obtained in this study provide strong evidences that the adhesive forces between CNTs and PET substrates can be substantially enhanced by corona-discharge pretreatment.

  • Metal coating with several nanometer thickness was applied on the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in order to improve electron emission characteristics and emission reliability for the potential applications in the area of various electron sources and displays. CNTs were grown on the 2-nm thick Invar (52% Fe, 42% Ni, 6% Co alloy)-catalized Si substrate by using plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition at $450^{\circ}C$. In order to reduce the spatial density of densely packed CNTs, as-grown CNTs were partly etched back by $N_2$ plasma and subsequently coated with 5~150 nm thick Ti by a sputtering method. 5 nm thick Ti-coated CNTs produced four times higher emission current density at the electric field of 6 V/${\mu}m$ and much lower emission current fluctuation, compared with the as-grown CNTs. These improved emission properties are mainly due to not only the work function of Ti (4.3 eV) lower than that of pristine CNTs (5 eV), but also lower contact resistance and better adhesion between CNT emitters and substrate accomplished by Ti coating.

  • In this study, a thin-film thermo-electrochemical cell that directly converts waste thermal energy into electrical energy was fabricated. Electrical conductivity of conducting carbon fiber, which was used as flexible electrode, was increased through coating of carbon nanotube, and resistance of the CNT-coated fiber electrode was not changed even after bending test with various curvatures. Maximum output power of the thermocell was increased quadratically with the temperature difference, and showed a value of about 2.5 mW/kg at temperature difference of $3.4^{\circ}C$. As a result of discharge test for 12 hours, it is confirmed that the cell can operates continuously. And thin-film thermocell wrapped around a pipe with hot liquid flowing within was demonstrated. Internal resistance of the cell was decreased with various curvature of heat pipe, and maximum output power was increased by 30 %. Therefore, the cell can be applied to various heat source.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance of radial heat sink used for high power LED lightings by natural convection cooling with surrounding air. Experimental and numerical analyses are carried out together. Parametric studies are performed to compare the effects of geometric parameters in radial heat sink such as the number of fins, fin height, fin length, and thickness of fin base as well as the surface coatings of radial heat sink. In this study, the cooling of 60 W LED lamp is examined with radiative heat transfer considered as well as natural convection. Numerical results show the optimum condition when the number of fin is 40, heat sink height is 120 mm, fin length is 15 mm, and fin base thickness is 3 mm. The difference in temperature of the LED metal PCB is within $1^{\circ}C$ between numerical analyses and experimental results. Also, the CNT coating on the heat sink surface is found to increase the cooling performance significantly.

  • Transparent conductive films of single wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) were prepared by spray coating method. The effect of acid treatment on the SWCNT films was investigated. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) shows that acid treatment can remove dispersing agent. The electrical and optical properties of acid-treated films were enhanced compared with those of as deposited SWCNT films. Nitric acid ($HNO_3$), sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$), nitric acid:sulfuric acid (3:1) were used for post treatment. Although all solutions reduced sheet resistance of CNT films, nitric acid can improve electrical characteristics efficiently. During acid treatment, transmittance was increased continuously with time. But the sheet resistance was decreased for the first 20 minutes and then increased again. Post-treated SWCNT films were transparent (85%) in the visible range with sheet resistance of about $162{\Omega}/sq$. In this paper we discuss simple fabrication, which is suitable for different types of large-scale substrates and simple processes to improve properties of SWCNT films.
