디젤기관에서 CNG혼소에 의한 배출가스 저감에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Emission Reduction of Duel-Fuel Engine by CNG)

  • CNG dual fuel engine for heavy duty diesel engine has been equipped to a Korean bus engine and tested to compare th engine performance and the emission characteristics with the existing diesel fueled engine. The results are summarized as follows. Diesel fueled engine has the fuel injection timing of BTDC17°. The injection timing of CNG modified engine is retarded to BTDC14° for reduction of NOx. Performance optimization has been carried out to have engine power equivalent to or better than the diesel fueled engine. Smoke is decreased by 85% by Korean smoke 3 mode test. By 6 mode test CO is increased by 313% and THC is increased by 1407%. NOx is decreased by 27%. Even though THC is increased very much, it's not too serious problem since CO and THC emission of diesel engine are very little compared to gasoline engine and THC don't give bad effect on human health. But the reduction technologies of CO and THC need to be considered.

  • 천연가스는 메탄을 주성분으로 하는 청정한 대체연료로 자동차나 트럭 등에 압축천연가스와 액화천연가스 형태로 사용할 수 있다. 그리고, 천연가스만을 사용하는 전소엔진과 가솔린 및 천연가스를 동시에 사용할 수 있는 겸용엔진이 있으며, 특히, 겸용엔진의 경우 두가지 연료를 동시에 사용할 수 있는 것으로 정의할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 선박용 가솔린 시스템을 인젝터, 레귤레이터, 연료탱크 및 전자제어장치로 구성된 압축 천연가스 겸용시스템으로 전환시켜 연료시스템과 동력값을 비교하였다. 그 결과, 천연가스엔진의 경우 적은 배출가스를 나타내었으며 최대동력은 가솔린엔진과 비교 약 7%정도 감소함을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • Natural gas is one of the most promising alternative fuels for automative vehicles, because it has lower exhaust emissions and better fuel economy characteristics than gasoline and can be used in conventional engines with a little modification. In the present study, a conventional gasoline engine was modified to a CNG dedicated engine, which can be operated with CNG( compressed natural gas) only, and a engine bench test was performed at various compression ratios. As a result, it was revealed that the prototype CNG engine can be operated with lower exhaust emissions, better fuel economy and better thermal efficiency, but with a sightly reduced brake horse power, compared to the conventional gasoline engine.

  • Recently air pollution is increased according to increase of vehicle. So many countries are studying about compressed natural gas engine. Research on the development of CNG dedicated engine that has important meaning both as a clean fuel and an alterna-tive energy to reduce the exhaust emission from diesel engine are actively going on these days. In this study the character-istics of CNG engine was investigated and the engine performance experimented by changing the parameters such as boost pressure. The CNG engine performance and exhaust emission were measured by engine performance mode at maximum load condition with increasing the rpm in the range of 1,000-2,200rpm. The exhaust emission was also measured at D-13 mode and compared to the emission regulation.

디젤-CNG 혼소엔진에서 CNG 발열량 변화가 연소 특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of CNG Heating Value on Combustion Characteristics of a Diesel-CNG Dual-Fuel Engine)

  • 2012년 7월부터 우리나라 천연가스 열량에 대한 기준이 기존의 표준열량제에서 열량범위제로 변경되면서 가정이나 산업체로 공급되는 가스 열량 변화가 가스기기 성능에 미치는 영향을 규명하고자 하는 노력이 이루어지고 있다. 특히 천연가스를 주 연료로 사용하는 열병합 발전용 엔진의 경우 이러한 열량 변화에 의해 엔진 성능 전반에 걸쳐 영향이 있을 것으로 예상된다. 따라서 이번 연구에서는 열량범위제를 고려한 CNG 열량 변화가 디젤-CNG 혼소엔진의 효율 및 연소특성에 미치는 영향에 대해 조사하였다. CNG 모사 연료의 발열량은 $10,400kcal/Nm^3$에서 $9,400kcal/Nm^3$까지 질소 가스를 CNG에 희석하는 방식으로 변경을 하였다. 우선 디젤연료의 분사시기와 혼소율을 80%로 고정한 조건에서 가스연료의 발열량 변화가 엔진 효율 및 출력 변화에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았으며, 열방출율 및 연소압력 등의 변화를 측정하였다. 실험 결과로부터 가스 열량이 낮아질수록 엔진 출력과 효율이 모두 감소함을 알 수 있었으며, 점화지연시간과 연소기간은 가스 열량 감소에 관계없이 일정하게 유지되는 반면 최대연소압력은 낮아짐을 볼 수 있었다.

  • A hydrogen enriched CNG engine can be stably operated at ultra lean condition and reduce emission extremely. It also has advantage to increase gradually the use of hydrogen for the coming hydrogen-energy age. In this studies, the combustion and emission characteristics of heavy-duty hydrogen-CNG engine were investigated to verify the enhancement of performance by enriched hydrogen into natural gas. The results showed that a hydrogen-CNG engine could achieve ultra lean operation and low emission, while power was reduced by the decrease of intake air flow.

  • Natural gas is one of the promising alternative fuels because of the abundant deposits and the cleanness of emission gas. It can be used in conventional gasoline engine without major modification. Natural gas has some advantages than gasoline i.e. the high octane number, good mixing condition because of gas and wide inflamable limit. In the present study, a $1.8{\ell}$ conventional gasoline engine is modified for using the CNG as a fuel instead of gasoline. Performance and emission characteristics are compared between gasoline and CNG with 4 cylinder SI Engine which is controlled by programable ECU. Parameters of experimentation are equivalence ratio, spark timing and fuels. We analyzed the combustion characteristics of the engine using the cylinder pressure i.e. ignition delay, combustion duration and cycle variation. As a result, CNG engine shows lower exhaust emissions but brake torque is slightly reduced compared to gasoline engine. Overall combustion duration is longer than that of gasoline because of lower burning speed.

The Performance and Emissions Analysis of a Multi Cylinder Spark Ignition Engine with Gasoline LPG & CNG

  • The introduction of alternative fuels is beneficial to overcome the fuel shortage and reduce engine exhaust emissions. LPG and CNG are relatively clean fuel and considered as most promising alternative automotive fuels worldwide because of its emission reduction potential and lower fuel price compared to gasoline. Now a day’s adaptation of dual fuel approach is the growing as common trend. The two fuels can be successfully implemented with existing gasoline engine with little modification. The present study was done to analyze the performance and emissions analysis of a multi cylinder spark ignition engine fuelled with the benefits of CNG and LPG aseffective alternate automotive fuels by simply using them in an unmodified petrol engine. The test results indicate, the energy content of CNG and LPG is the most limiting factor in acceptance for fuel economy and performance reasons. Thermal efficiency was high for CNG lowest for gasoline and LPG between the two. BSFC, CO and HC were low and NOx was high for CNG and low for gasoline, LPG lies between the two.

  • In this study a heavy duty diesel engine was modified into a 11-liter 6-cylinder SPI CNG dedicated engine, which was tested to investigate the performance and exhaust emission under the maximum load condition as the engine speed was increased in the range of 1,000∼2,200 rpm. The exhaust emission was also measured at D-13 mode as well as AVL-8 mode.

RI-CNG 엔진에서 연료 분사시기에 따른 연소특성에 관한 연구 (Study on Combustion Characteristics with Fuel Injection Timing in a RI-CNG Engine)

  • The RI gasoline engine haying a sub-chamber had a high cycle variation due to the difficulty of the residual gas scavenge in the sub-chamber. To solve this problem and improve the combustion performance of RI engine, we devised a method to inject directly CNG fuel into the sub-chamber. A DI diesel engine of single cylinder was converted into a RI-CNG engine and an electronic control unit for the engine was manufactured. In this study, the combustion characteristics of the RI-CNG engine were investigated with the injection timings and air excess ratios at the load conditions of 50% throttle open rate and 1700rpm. As the results from this study, the RI-CNG engine worked reliably under the condition of the ignitable lean limit of $\lambda=1.7$ by showing the $COV_{imep}$ below about 5%. And the highest thermal efficiency could be obtained in the injection timing that produced the high imep and the low $COV_{imep}$ at the same time. The CO emission concentration indicated very low values and the THC and $NO_x$ showed an opposite pattern. With a view to improving the thermal efficiency and reducing the harmful emissions, the proper control region of the ignition timing and the mixture ratio were nearly ATDC $20^{\circ}\sim50^{\circ}$ and $\lambda=1.4$ respectively.
