  • A numerical analysis of the liquid-gas two-phase flows has been conducted. The incompressible equations of the two-phase flows were solved by the artificial compressibility method with the CLSVOF interface capturing method. To analyze the grid dependency of CLSVOF, a numerical analysis of Zalesak's disk and three-dimensional liquid deformation problem were carried out, and the reconstruction of deformation was investigated. The Rayleigh-Taylor instability was numerically analyzed by applying the equations of incompressible two-phase flow, and the surface instability was observed.

  • The numerical simulation of wave slamming on a 3D platform deck was investigated using a coupled Level-Set and Volume-of-Fluid (CLSVOF) method for overset grid system incorporated into the Finite-Analytic Navier-Stokes (FANS) method. The predicted slamming impact forces were compared with the corresponding experimental data. The comparisons showed that the CLSVOF method is capable of accurately predicting the slamming impact and capturing the violent free surface flow including wave slamming, wave inundation and wave recession. Moreover, the capability of the present CLSVOF method for overset grid system is a prominent feature to handle the prediction of wave slamming on offshore structure.

  • A general purpose program for computing 3-D flows has been extended for two-phase flows with topologically complex interfaces. The 3-D interfaces are tracked by employing a coupled level set and volume-of-fluid (CLSVOF) method which not only can calculate an interfacial curvature accurately but also can achieve mass conservation well. The program has been tested through the computations of bubbles rising in a liquid. The numerical results are found to compare well with the results reported in the literature.

  • A level set method is combined with the volume-of-fluid method so that the coupled method can not only calculate an interfacial curvature accurately but also can achieve mass conservation well. The coupled level set and volume-of-fluid(CLSVOF) method is efficiently implemented by employing an interface reconstruction algorithm which is based on the explicit relationship between the interface configuration and the fluid volume function. The CLSVOF method is applied for numerical simulation of droplet impact on solid surfaces with variable contact angles. The numerical results are found to preserve mass conservation and to be in good agreement with the data reported in the literature. Also, the present method proved to be applicable to the complex phenomena such as breakup and rebound of a droplet.
