The major objective of this study was to develop recommendations for improving the design of pergola facilities located in neighborhood parks. The study employed the following methods : Physical measures and questionnaires. Physical treasures were taken of certain environmental attributes such as pergola sizes, structures, materials, etc. Questionnaires were randomly distributed to pergola users on the same day on which physical measures were scheduled. All data were collected in 1994 during the season of pergola use, September 3 to October 9. The major findings are as follows; 1. Of the 508 respondents to the question about use motivations, approximately 32% were a shady place, 18% seating arrangements suitable for conversation, 15% unconsciously, 13% a lack of bench in the park, 9% good view, and 13% other. 2. Regression analysis indicated that the best predictors of pergola user' satisfaction were : harmony with surroundings, accessibility, aesthetics of pergolas and benches, function of benches, and climbing plants. 3. Pergola design needs to be developed because pergola users were less satisfied with their pergola than with the park.
The forest vegetation in Daedeok Science Town were classified as second forest vegetation and afforestation vegetation. The second forest vegetation was classified into two communities such as Pinus densiflora community and Quercus acutissima community. Also, the afforestation vegetation was classified again as Robinia pseudoacacia community, Pinus rigida community, Pinus thunbergii community, and Castanea crenata community. In this study area, we found total 217 taxa. The average species of appearance in Pinus densiflora community, Quercus acutissima community, Robinia pseudoacacia community, Pinus rigida community, Pinus thunbergii community, and Castanea crenata community were 21, 20, 20, 21, 21, and 18, respectively. There was no difference in appearance species between second forest and afforestation vegetation. We found total 12 naturalized plants taxa of Commelina communis, Phytolacca americana, Erigeron annuus, and Ailanthus altissima in the plots and total 19 naturalized plants taxa of Dactylis glomerata, Bidens frondosa, Xanthium strumarium, and Soianum nigrum in the climbing roads and forest circumferences. And so, we found total 31 naturalized plants taxa in this study area.
Kudzu vine(Pueraria montana var. lobata) is an invasive climbing woody vine that envelops trees and shrubs, pressing physically and shutting out sunlight, which needs to be controlled. Kudzu vine pathogens were surveyed as a way to seek its biocontrol agents in 2002. Occurrence of a bacterial halo blight disease of kudzu vine was observed at several localities in Korea including Euiwang and Suwon in Gyeonggi Province, Daejon, and Gochang and Buan in Jeonbuk Province. Symptoms of brown to black spots with a surrounding yellowish halo appeared from June and lasted till the rainy season without much expansion, but accompanying often leaf blight and defoliation. Isolated bacteria were identified as Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola based on physiological and cultural characteristics, Biolog, fatty acid and 16S rDNA sequencing analyses. In artificial inoculation test, these bacteria produced the same halo spot symptoms on kudzu vine and bean plants. They also induced hypersensitive responses (HR) on tobacco, tomato, and chili pepper leaves. This is the first report of a bacterial disease of kudzu vine in Korea, and the bacterial pathogen can be used as a biocontrol agent against the pest plant.

This study was analyzed to photosynthetic pigment concentrations and changes of SOD activities on seven species of liana of A. heterophylla, P. scandens, V. thunbergii, P. tricuspidata, C. trilobus, L. japonica and T. kirilowii, and two species of E. arvense and A. princeps of non climbing plants. Concentrations of chlorophyll a and b, total chlorophylls and total carotenoids of P. tricuspidata in 100 ppb ozone site were the most increased. It was the most increased to P. scandens in ratio of chlorophylls and carotenoids, and E. arvense in ratio of chlorophyll a and b. There was difference to ratio of chlorophyll a and b of liana and non liana. At ratio of chlorophyll a and b of 100 ppb ozone site and the control it was more sensitive to chlorophyll a than chlorophyll b, and P. tricuspidata was the most sensitive at comparing with species, and it was more sensitive to liana than non liana. In SOD activities A. princeps was the most increased to 3535.7 unit/g, and P. scandens was the fewest increased to 109.3 unit/g, and A. heterophylla was only decreased to 131.7 unit/g in comparing to 100 ppb ozone sites and the control.

This study was conducted to develop new indoor plants and to investigate the effects of light intensity on the growth of Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium Nakai and Piper kauzura. Most of T. asiaticum var. intermedium Nakai under 100 lux light intensity were blighted in two months, whereas survival rate was 83.3% after five months under 1,000 lux and 2,500 lux. Plant height, number of leaf, leaf width and leaf length increased as light intensity increased. The plants maintained under 2,500 lux showed the greatest plant height and leaf number. Piper kadzura Ohwi was defoliated and blighted in four months under 100 lux light intensity, whereas survival rate was 100% after five months under 1,000 lux and 2,500 lux. But, 1,000 lux light intensity was more favorable chlorophyll contents, leaf length and leaf width than 2,500 lux light intensity. Slight increase of chlorophyll contents and leaf growth under 1,000 lux indicates that Piper kadzura Ohwi could be utilized highly as a indoor ornamental plant.
This study was conducted to monitor 4 years of changes in the vegetation structure starting from 2007 when restoration began and propose vegetation management ideas for the riparian ecological restoration areas in the purchased land around Nakdonggang(River). The study was conducted in each of 15 locations ($208,342m^2$) in the riparian ecological restoration areas in November 2007, September 2008, October 2009 and September 2010. The analysis results of the changes in planting species and population showed that, in the case of trees, Acer pseudo-sieboldianum, Quercus acutissima, Acer ginnala, Quercus aliena, Quercus variabilis indicated relatively little changes in their numbers and Quercus dentata, Cornus walteri, Morus alba, Styrax obassia, Sorbus alnifolia var. macrophylla indicated a 100% withering rate. Most shrubs withered due to the oppressive pressure of herbs and climbing plants. The planting density decreased over 4 years on average 28 plants/$100m^2$ to 20 plants/$100m^2$ to 16 plants/$100m^2$. Shortly after the restoration, The the amount of growth was reduced by restoration stress. however as time goes on after the restoration tended to stabilize. The changes in the basal area showed a decrease from $507.1cm^2/100m^2$ in 2007 right after restoration to $301.8cm^2/100m^2$ in 2008 and afterwards showed an increasing trend by going to $324.9cm^2/100m^2$ in 2009 and $372.7cm^2/100m^2$ in 2010. To improve the planting structure of the riparian ecological restoration area, the selection of tree species that have been considered for soil moisture and the differentiation of suitable planting structures that have been considered for local conditions were needed.
The purpose of this study is to establish trail use impact indicators, and evaluate the degree of use impact based on the understanding of the causality among the impacts on the spot. Theoretical reviews developed three indicators in terms of three ecological impacts, four physical impacts, and five sociological impacts, respectively. With this indicators, observation and questionnaire survey were employed on Gwanak Mountain Trail to measure the levels of impacts forementioned. As for the ecological impact, Some loss of ground cover vegetation was reveled near the trail due to trail use, however the level of disturbance by the naturalized and exotic plants was insignificant. Physical impacts such as soil hardness, enlargement of trail width were found intensified. The result of measuring sociological impacts showed visitors had expected higher level of crowding and encounters before their visit, therefore overall satisfaction level was positive, despite higher awareness level of actual crowding. Intensified continuing use of the trail is aggravating ecological and physical impacts on Gwanak Mountain trail, because of its location in a metropolitan area. Sociological impacts seem favorable at present, however if ecological and physical impacts were deteriorated, sociological impacts would also be affected. To maintain the quality level of use experience, managerial efforts to improve climbing culture as well as ecological and physical environment such as restoration of damaged areas are needed.

This study is for the collection and analysis of historical records on forest culture. It aims to satisfy the people's needs for forest culture by collecting and analyzing forest-related materials described in the law codes of the Joseon Dynasty to grasp the general matters of the forest culture at that time. From the provisions related to forests in the law codes of the Joseon Dynasty (Gyeongguk Daejeon, Sokdaejeon, Daejeon Tongpyeon and Daejeonhoetong), it was possible to gain insights into the process of changes in forest administration and policies, and changes in forest landscape, etc. Analysis of the Gyeongguk Daejeon revealed the following facts; at that time, special tree species or trees produced only in specific regions were managed separately; and there was a lot of attention paid to manage the landscape of specific areas; for reserved forest management regulations, beyond the level of logging bans, attention was paid not only to planting and cultivation, but also to landscape creation. In addition, it was found that private ownership of forests was generally forbidden, however, the ownership of a certain range of forests around the tombs was recognized for funeral rites.

Mount Tai, with an elevation of 1,532 meters, has a reputation as ''The Most Revered of the Five Sacred Mountains (五嶽獨尊)", despite not being the highest mountain in China. A guidebook is a book or pamphlet that contains an introduction and description of specific activities or facilities, especially detailed and accurate information about scenic spots, which provide superior vistas to than other commercially publicized locations. The study aims to investigate Mount Tai's landscape characteristics by analyzing the landscape types and elements, the Kernel Density, the Mean Center and the Standard Deviational Ellipse of the landscape elements appearing in guidebooks introducing Mount Tai. The research results of this study are summarized as follows. First, the landscape type characteristics of Mount Tai are dominated by natural landscapes, which are different from what was shown highlighted in poems and Big Data as they proposed that the landscape characteristics of Mount Tai is dominated by human activities. Second, from the perspective of subdivided landscape types, the landscape elements that appeared in Mount Tai are topography, structure, architecture, plants, semantics, human beings and image orderly, based on the proportion of landscape elements. Third, from the perspective of landscape elements by times series, "Fengshan (封禅)", "sacrifices (祭祀)" and "legends" mostly appeared in the 1950s and 1980s, and after the 1990s, "climbing" and "overlooking" mostly appeared. Fourth, the landscape elements of Mount Tai are concentrated in Daiding (岱顶) and Dai Temple (岱庙) in all periods in terms of spatial distribution. This will become an important space for Mount Tai scenic spots in the future. Moreover, as a whole, the landscape elements of Mount Tai have changed from the concentrated distribution form in Mount Tai scenic spot to the scattered distribution form including Mount Tai and Tai'an City. This will provide necessary enlightenment for the landscape preservation and the re-production of guidebooks of Mount Tai scenic spot in the future.
Pine forest communities developed in Mt. Palgong, southeastern Korea, were studied phytosociologically, with special reference to multiple management of local forests, and were classified into two communities, Pinus densiflora - Quercus mongolica community(I : mountain forest) and P. densiflora-Climbing plants community (II : valley forest) and six subgroups accompanied by several subgroups. Judging from the coincidence method, the division of communities (vegetation units) was closely related to altitude and topography. Based on vegetation units, a vertical distribution map of pine forest communities was prepared. The species composition(%) of pine forest communities under stratification, in upper and lower tree layer, teas I higher than II, in middle and shrubs lacer II higher than I (Total : Upper 15.5%, Middle 28.4%, Lower 34.6%. Shrubs 21.5%. Sum of mean coverage%i of understory vegetation was II twice as high as I (Total. shrubs 28.4%. forbs 11.4%, Graminoids 11.8%, ferns 1.0%). Based on constance, coverage and d.b.h. class etc., an actual growth and occurrence table of tree species and understory vegetation by vegetation unity were prepared, and could assume a criterion for judging potential dominance-growth conditions.
