  • Katsura tree (Cercidiphyllum japonicum Sieb. Et Zucc) bark was collected, air-dried and extracted with 70% aqueous acetone, then concentrated and sequentially fractionated using n-hexane, methylene chloride ($CH_2Cl_2$), ethylacetate (EtOAc), and $H_2O$. The $H_2O$ fraction was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column with various aqueous MeOH eluting solvents to isolate an ellagitannin. The isolate was elucidated as macabarterin, a polyoxygenated ellagitannin by NMR analysis, including HSQC, HMBC, Q-TOF MS, and with the comparison of authentic literature data. The compound was an ellagitannin which was isolated, for the first time, from the extracts of Katsura tree bark, and has never been reported before in domestic tree or plant sources.

  • Crystal structures and magnetic properties of annealed Co-(Al-Fe) alloys have been investigated. Annealed specimens showed superparamagnetism when x=0.05 and ferromagnetism when $x{\geq}0.10$. Magnetization increased as x increased. X-ray diffraction data revealed that specimens were single-phase in B2(CsCl) structure with constant lattice parameter $2.87{\AA}$. The experimental results were analized on the point of view of the local environmental effect of magnetic atoms.

  • The E.M.F of the galvanic cell with fused salt was measured to determine the activities of zinc at 700-820K over the entire composition range of liquid Zn-Cd alloys. The cell used was as follows: (-) W | Zn(pure) $Zn^{2+}(KCI-LiCl)$ | Zn(in Zn-Cd alloy) | W (+) The activities of zinc in the alloys showed positive deviation from Raoult's law over the entire composition range. The activity of cadmium and some thermodynamic functions such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy were derived from the results by the thermodynamic relationship. The comparison of the results and the literature data was made. The liquid Zn-Cd alloy is found to be close to the regular solution. The concentration fluctuations in long wavelength limit, $S_{cc}(o)$, in the liquid alloy was calculated from the results.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of mordants and dyeing method : on the dyeability and color fastness of the fabrics with the extract from Gardenia. The following results were drawn from the data obtained. 1. The wavelengths of the strongest absolution bands of Amur cork tree, Gardenia extract was 440nm respectively and the wavelengths 440-460nm after the mordants were added in the color extracts(The bands of Gardenia extract shifts to short wavelength side as pH increased.). In all cases, the abosorbancies were increased. 2. The main color substances in extract from Gardenia were expected to be cretin respectively by spectrophotometric and HPLC studies. 3. As to the concentration of color extract for dyeing, about 20g/L was the optimum concentration to dye silk and cotton fabrics with extract. 4. For silk and cotton fabrics dyeing with Gardenia extract, $SnCl_2$ was the best mordants. The K/S values of dyed fabrics were increased gradually as the concentration of mordants increased, and the highest K/S values were obtained at 5-10%. When using the mordanting methods, silk fabric by premordanting and cotton fabric by synmordanting had a greater effect K/S value. 5. The color fastness of fabrics dyed with Gardenia extract against dry cleaning, washing, rubbing and perpiration was improved 1 level or so but light fastness was remained 1 level showing without any effect.

  • The south ore deposits of the Dunjeon gold mine is a fissure-filling vein emplaced in the granitoids, skarnized and hornfelsified rocks of Ordovician Dumudong formation. The vein mineral paragenesis is complicated by repeated fracturing but three distinct depositional stages can be recognized; (1) base metal sulfides stage, (2) base metal sulfides, antimony-bismuthsulfosalts and native metals stage, (3) barren carbonates stage. Gold was mainly deposited in stage II. Fluid inclusion data indicate that fluid temperatures were from $310^{\circ}C$ to $402^{\circ}C$ during stage I and then declined steadily to $148^{\circ}C$ in the closing late stage III. Salinities were in the range of 0.4 to 5.0 equivalent weight percent NaCl and do not reveals any systematic trend through stag I, II and III. Ore mineralogy suggests that temperatures and sulfur fugacities in the earlier stage II were in the range of $340^{\circ}C$ to $360^{\circ}C$, $10^{-8}$ to $10^{-9}$ atm. respectively and then declined steadily to the range of $185^{\circ}C$ to $200^{\circ}C$ and $10^{-17}$ to $10^{-19}$atm. in the later stage II.

  • In the present investigation, we studied the effect of alcoholic extract of Moringa oleifera (M. oleifera) seed kernels on various experimental models of bronchial asthma. Significant (P < 0. 05) increase in preconvulsion time was observed due to pretreatment with M. oleifera when the guinea pigs were exposed to either acetylcholine (Ach) or histamine aerosol. This bronchodilating effect of M. oleifera was comparable to ketotifen fumarate. Spasmolytic effect of M. oleifera was also observed by dose dependent inhibition of ideal contractions induced by Ach, 5HT, histamine and $BaCl_2$. Alcoholic extract of M. oleifera produced significant dose dependent protection by egg albumin and compound 48/80 induced mast cell degranulation. Pretreatment with alcoholic extract of M. oleifera also decreased carrageenan induced rat paw edema, which was comparable to that of standard diclofenac sodium. Minimum inhibitory concentration for alcoholic extract of M. oleifera was low as compared to cold-water extract and hot water extract when antimicrobial activity was tested against various respiratory pathogens like Escherichia coli (E. coli), Staphylococus aureus (S. aureus) and pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). Our data suggest that antiasthmatic activity of M. oleifera seed kernels may be due to its bronchodilator, anti-inflammatory, mast cell stabilization and antimicrobial activity.

  • This study investigates the effect of filler content (wt%), presence of interphase and agglomerates on the effective Young's modulus of polypropylene (PP) based nanocomposites reinforced with exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets ($xGnP^{TM}$) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The Young's modulus of the composites is determined using tensile testing based on ASTM D638. The reinforcement/polymer interphase is characterized in terms of width and mechanical properties using atomic force microscopy which is also used to investigate the presence and size of agglomerates. It is found that the interphase has an average width of ~30 nm and modulus in the range of 5 to 12 GPa. The Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model is modified to account for the effect of interphase and filler agglomerates and the model predictions for the effective modulus of the composites are compared to the experimental data. The presented results highlight the need of considering various experimentally observed filler characteristics such as agglomerate size and aspect ratio and presence and properties of interphase in the micromechanical models in order to develop better design tools to fabricate multifunctional polymer nanocomposites with engineered properties.

  • Carbon/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared by $CCl_4$ solvent mixing method with different mixing ratios. Since the carbon layers derived from pitch on the $TiO_2$ particles were porous, the Carbon/$TiO_2$ composite series showed a good adsorptivity and photo decomposition activity. The BET surface area for the carbon layer in the sample increases to increasing with pitch contents. The SEM results present to the characterization of porous texture on the Carbon/$TiO_2$ composite and pitch distributions on the surfaces for all the materials used. From XRD data, a weak and broad carbon peak of graphene with pristine anatase peaks were observed in the X-ray diffraction patterns for the Carbon/$TiO_2$. The EDX spectra show the presence of C, O and S with strong Ti peaks. Most of these samples are richer in carbon and major Ti metal than any other elements. Finally, the excellent photocatalytic activity of Carbon/$TiO_2$ with slope relationship between relative concentration (C/$C_0$) of MB and t could be attributed to the homogeneous coated pitch on the external surface by $CCl_4$ solvent method.

  • Ciliates are considered one of the most diverse protozoa and play significant roles in ecology. For successful taxonomic study of these microscopic eukaryotes, a staining procedure is necessary, due mainly to intrinsic difficulties in recognizing characteristics from living cells. Although molecular taxonomy has been used to resolve the ambiguities associated with traditional morphology-based taxonomy, extraction of genomic DNA from stained ciliate cells is not available yet. In the present study, we describe a method to extract genomic DNA from a single protargol-impregnated euplotid cell. By using $HgCl_2$ as a fixative and modulating the exposure time of bleach solution in the protargol impregnation, high-quality genomic DNA can successfully be extracted from a stained single cell with minimal loss of morphological integrity. This technique will contribute to the effectiveness of combined approaches of molecular and morphological taxonomy from single ciliate cells.
