  • Objectives : This study aimed to systematically and comprehensively review controlled clinical trials on the effectiveness and safety of Chuna Manual Therapy for stroke. Methods : By October 7, 2019, three core databases and three domestic databases were searched. Seven major academic journals on the related field were also hand-searched. Methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Meta-analysis was conducted and the quality of its evidence was assessed using the GRADE methodology. Results : Five articles met the eligibility criteria. The results of most of included studies were in favor of Chuna Manual Therapy. No study described any adverse events during or after the clinical trials. Meta-analysis of three eligible studies showed that the pre- and post-treatment scores on the Modified Barthel Index (mean difference 8.00, 95% confidence interval 0.26 to 15.74) and Berg Balance Scale (mean difference 3.57, 95% confidence interval 0.64 to 6.51) of the Chuna-treated group were significantly different, but only marginally higher than those of the non-treatment group. Thus, the level of evidence gathered from these studies was assessed to be low. Conclusions : Based on current available evidence, any confirmative conclusions cannot be made on the effectiveness and safety of Chuna Manual Therapy for stroke because of the small sample size, low methodological quality, presence of statistical heterogeneity, and missing safety information. More rigorously designed large-scale multi-center studies are needed to establish more specific and credible evidence to support or oppose the use of Chuna Manual Therapy for stroke.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to review the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy for the treatment of tension type headache(TTH). Methods : All processes were independently carried out by three investigators. Literature search was performed in 3 databases(pubmed, OASIS, NDSL) from their inception to May 2016. Searched reports was twice excluded for title, abstract and body. And then, data extract and analysis was done before assessing risk of bias by Cochrane Handbook. Results : 11 RCT were included. Generally, Fascia Chuna therapy and Chuna spine & joint manipulation therapy were used for TTH. Except for 1 report, Chuna manual therapy was shown to be effective in treating TTH. In assessing risk of bias, because of the characteristic of intervention, blinding of participants was high risk of bias in most reports. Conclusions : Chuna manual therapy was shown to be effective in treating TTH. In korea, better designed trials with high quality is needed from now on.

  • Objective : There is no case report on the ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament(OPLL) treated by CHUNA manual therapy in oriental medicine. We experienced a patient(32-year-old female) with OPLL improved by CHUNA manual therapy in X-ray image and visual analogue scale(VAS), and we report it clinically. Methods : During the patient with OPLL was treated CHUNA manual therapy, acupuncture, and physical therapy, we examined cervical X-ray, CT and Moire topography and evaluated the patient's symptoms by VAS. And we observed whether the changes exist or not in X-ray and VAS. Results : VAS in symptoms was improved significantly(p<0.05), and the radiologic X-ray image in OPLL patient was improved. Conclusion : OPLL was generally treated conservative treatment and operation in severe case. But CHUNA manual therapy may be more effective in conservative treatment of OPLL, if more clinical studies and reaches are accomplished.

  • The Chuna(推拿) in Korea has been developed since 1990's. Korean Chuna which is the only one manual therapy done by medical doctor is riched by absorbing other nation's manual therapy like Chinese Tuina(中國推拿) and Chiropractic therapy of U.S.A. So, We find that Korean Chuna's peculiarity and development by comparing Chinese Tuina, Chiropractic of U.S.A and Japanese manual therapy which influenced establishment of Korean Chuna. We compared each manual therapy's history, development, diagnosis, correction and treatment of human body, frequently contacting disease and medical service of the present state. Korean Chuna has absorbed other nation's manual therapy and advantage of preserving muscle-skeleton and spinal disorder disease. But, for more prosperity, it needs union of various conception and diagnosis and more research and application to more various disease, for example in internal medicine, gynecology or pediatry and founding system as regular academic work inside the college the possibility which objection and it will practice more completeness. And as one of specialty apprentice doctor subject inside the hospital, the possibility of raising a quality improvement of study and research environment.

  • Objectives To determine the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy combined acupuncture for trigeminal neuralgia. Methods We searched 6 electronic databases (Pubmed, CAJ, Oasis, RISS, DBPIA, KoreanTK) and 2 journals up to August 2016. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using Chuna manual therapy combined acupuncture for trigeminal neuralgia. The methodological quality of each RCT was assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results 3 RCT studies were eligible in our review. The meta-analysis of 3 studies showed favorable results for the use of Chuna manual therapy combined acupuncture. High risk of bias were observed in all studies. Conclusions Although there are favorable results with meta-analysis, our systematic review are highly dependent on the single source of Chinese electrical database, CAJ. Now limited evidence is available to support Chuna manual therapy combined acupuncture for trigeminal neuralgia and further well-designed RCTs should be encouraged.

  • Objectives : This study aimed to report the evidence of difficulty, safety, and frequency of the use of Chuna Manual Therapy. Methods : The survey questions were developed using the consensus from a professor who majored in Rehabilitation Medicine of Korean Medicine (RMKM). November 26th to December 31st 2018, the questionnaire was given to education training members of the Korean Society of Chuna Manual Medicine for Spine & Nerves by paper. Twenty-nine(23%) of the questionnaires were retrieved. Difficulty, safety, and frequency of the use of Chuna Manual Therapy were reported based on the questionnaire. Results : In this study, the more difficult techniques were observed to be less safe. In particular, the adjustment techniques applied to the cervical and lumbar spine was answered with high difficulty. Although these techniques are high difficulty and low safety, the reason for its versatility also suggests that the technique has a high therapeutic effect and necessity. Conclusions : This is the first consensus on experts'opinions on Chuna Manual Therapy for education. We hope that this report is helpful for Korean medicine doctors who operate technique and expected to make clinical evidence of Chuna Manual Therapy.

  • Background : Charcot Marie Tooth disease can cause muscle weakness and foot deformity. Ankle pain induced by foot deformity affect patients' gait pattern and quality of life. Objectives : The purpose of this study is to evaluate the traditional Korean medicine treatment for ankle pain induced with Charcot-Marie Tooth Disease, especially Chuna manual therapy on ankle joints. Methods : One patient was treated with acupuncture, phamacopuncture, herbal medication and chuna manual therapy on ankle joints. To evaluate the pain of ankle, lower back and lower extremity, visual analog scale(VAS) was measured. Results : After treatment for 5 week, the pain of ankle joint was declined from VAS 6 to VAS 2. Conclusions : Traditional Korean medicine treatment including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medication and Chuna manual therapy is effective for ankle pain with foot deformity. But further studies are required to prove the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy on ankle joints.

The methodological quality of each RCT was assessed by the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results : 7 RCTs met our inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis of 7 studies showed favorable results for the use of Chuna manual therapy. High risk of bias were observed for performance bias and detection bias. Conclusions : Our systematic review found favorable results using Chuna manual therapy for neck pain. But there are several limitations in our study due to lack of well-designed RCT. To obtain stronger evidence, further clinical trials would be needed.
