  • LGC-40863(proposed common name ; pyribenzoxim), (benzophenone O-[2,6-bis[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)oxy]benzoyl]oxime) is a new rice herbicide being developed by LG Chemical Ltd. The herbicide is highly selective between rice(Oryza sativa L.) and weeds including barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli(L.) P. Beauv.), and assumed to inhibit acetolactate synthase(ALS ; EC 4.1.3.18) because other structurally related herbicides inhibit the enzyme. To know inhibitory activity and the mode of inhibition of LGC-40863, $I_{50}$(concentration inhibiting ALS activity by 50%) and inhibition kinetics were investigated using ALS extracted from rice and barnyardgrass. $I_{50}$ values of LGC-40863 were 14 and 16mM in rice and barnyardgrass, respectively. In contrast to imazapyr(2-[4,5-dihydro-4-mythyl-4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pyridine-carboxylic acid) which showed an uncompetitive inhibition pattern, LGC-40863 was a noncompetitive inhibitor to ALS with respect to pyruvate similar to chlorsulfuron(2-chloro-N-((4-methoxy-6-methyl-l,3,5-triazin-2-yl) aminocarbonyl)benz-enesulfonamide) in both plants.

  • To find out the repeated application effect of chicken and pig manure composts on tomato growth and soil physico-chemical properties, different rates of the composts were applied to greenhouse soils with low fertility for 3 years and tomato was grown annually. As application rate of compost increased, the growth and fruit yield of tomato increased markedly, and there are also a little increase in sugar content in fruit juice and weight per fruit. When only compost was applied, however, physical and chemical properties in soil showed to be unbalanced such as significantly low bulk density and hardness, and high porosity as well as high organic matter and exchangeable K content, and low exchangeable Ca content than those of optimum range for soil diagnosis. Therefore mixed use of compost and chemical fertilizer is more promising way than the only use of compost to make suitable physico-chemical properties for tomato growth.

  • In physical and reactive extraction system using equilibrium extraction equipment, the effects of extractants, concentration of extractant, and solvent on the degree of extraction were investigated. The organic acids used were acrylic acid and metacrylic acid. Extractants were n-octylamine(OA), di-n-octylamine(DOA), tri-n-octylamine(TOA) and tri-octylmetyl ammonium chloride(TOMAC ; Aliquat 336). We found that the degree of extraction for reactive extraction was 2~9 times than that for physical extraction and that effect of extractants on the degree of extraction of organic acid was the order of OA

  • We developed an evolutionary optimization process involving a genetic algorithm and combinatorial chemistry (combi-chem), which was tailored exclusively for tile development of LED phosphors with a high luminescent efficiency, when excited by soft ultra violet irradiation. The ultimate goal of our study was to develop oxide red phosphors, which are suitable for three-band white Light Emitting Diodes (LED). To accomplish this, a computational evolutionary optimization process was adopted to screen a Eu$^{3+}$-doped alkali earth borosilicate system. The genetic algorithm is a well-known, very efficient heuristic optimization method and combi-chem is also a powerful tool for use in an actual experimental optimization process. Therefore the combination of a genetic algorithm and combi-chem would enhance the searching efficiency when applied to phosphor screening. Vertical simulations and an actual synthesis were carried out and promising red phosphors for three-band white LED applications, such as Eu$_{0.14}$Mg$_{0.18}$Ca$_{0.07}$Ba$_{0.12}$B$_{0.17}$Si$_{0.32}$O$_{\delta}$, were obtained.

  • The adsorptive behaviors of carbon monoxide and methanol over $V_2O_5$catalyst were studied by means of thermal desorptlon spectroscopy (TDS) under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. Carbon monoxide adsorbed on oxygen-deficient V sites as well as on V=O groups of the $V_2O_5$ surface. CO adsorbed on the V sites desorbed at 380 K while CO adsorbed on the V=O groups formed carbonate species with surface oxygen of $V_2O_5$ and desorbed as $CO_2$ resulting in the reduction of the surface of she $V_2O_5$catalyst. The amount of CO adsorbed in the form of carbonate species increased by both the pre- and post-adsorbed oxygen. The adsorptive behavior of methanol over the catalyst was studied by thermal desorption experiments of $CH_3OH$, HCHO, CO, and $H_2$ upon methanol adsorption at 298 K. The results showed that methanol was adsorbed dissociatively on the $V_2O_5$catalyst as methoxy and hydroxyl groups at 298K.

  • The results of water analysis for 10 stations in the main Naktong and 11 stations in the tributaries from March to December 1968 are as follows: The water quality of the Naktong River Basin is generally the frist class of water, especially the tributaries, Hwang river, Nam river, Milyang river, Naesongchun, Hoechun, Wichun and Panbyunchun were dissolved in less than 100 mg/l as the amount of the total ion of the main component. In comparison with river discharge, the amount of the total ion of the main component is decreased in June and July, because of the river discharge is increased in those periods. According to the measurement of the conductivity and the hardness, the better water quality is distinguished by the following order: lower part of river (Namji), middle part of river (Waegwan), upper part of river (Yean). The conductivity of Kumho river, Tongchon is higher than the middle part of the main river and Nam river, Chongam is smaller than lower part of the main rivller. The variation of the amount of the total ion of main component in the basin is mainly effected by $HCO_3^-, SO_4^{-2}, Cl^-, Ca^{+2}$. The relationship between $[K^+]\;and\;[C^l-]\;and\;[Na^+]\;and\;[Cl^-]\;are\;[K^+]=0.04\;[Cl^-]+1.7\;mg/l,\;[Na^+]=0.06\;[Cl^-]$ mg/l .The main river was much contaminated by Kumho river and C.O.D. at Gang-chung, Kumho river in June was recorder over the standard about 7 times.

  • A prototype of expert system which can support the operation for the municipal waste water treatment plant located at Kyoung-Ki Do, Kwang-ju Kun was developed and tested. This system provides (i) tracking the cause of the problem, (ii) analysis, and (iii) solution Knowledge-base consists of about 100 production-rules for the biological wastewater process, such as bio-reactor and final clarifier. Rules were obtained from the analysis of the problems such as sludge bulking. The system provides stable process control and management and effectively helps inexperienced operators with advanced and standard technologies. Future works will focus to develop a statistical process control model and associate with expert system. The control model can process the operation data statistically; analyze the relationship between affecting factors and control variables; and provide optimum operation parameters.
