  • Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) interfere with gas chromatographic analysis of multiple organochlorine pesticide residues. In the present work, existing Florisil column chromatographic method has been modified as to improve separation of organochlorine pesticides and their metabolites from PCBs. It was amply demonstrated that separation of $\alpha-BHC,\; \gamma-BHC$ Heptachlor epoxide Dieldrin, p.p-DDD, p.p'-DDT from PCBs such as Aroclor 1254 is complete and recovery of the pesticides is found quantitative. Aldrin and Heptachlor in the Aroclor eluant can be separately analyzed by comparison of the chromatographic pattern of standard Aroclor 1254 with that of Aroclor 1254 a dmixed with the two pesticides. The Florsil column technique can be utilized in the routine evaluation of the organochlorine pesticide residues by gas chromatography.

  • The adsorption characteristics of ammonia-Cu(II) complex on activated carbon were studied. Firstly, the specific surface area of the activated carbon was measured by using the BET adsorption apparatus. Secondly, the characteristics of the removal copper(II) ion from aqueous ammonia solution by forming a complex with ammonia and then by the adsorption of the complex on the activated carbon were studied. It was found that the specific surface area increases with decreasing the mesh number of the activated carbon, and the optimum pH for the adsorption of the Cu(II) ion on she activated carbon was found to be approximately 6. It was also found that the adsorbed Cu(II)-ammonia complexes on the activated carbon in the aqueous ammonia solution have two types, depending on the concentration of the solution ; i.e. $[Cu(NH_3){_2}]^{2+}$and $[Cu(NH_3){_3}]^{2+}$ for $2.25{\times}10^{-4}(mol/{\ell})$and $2.25{\times}10^{-3}(mol/{\ell})$, respectively.

  • The chemical heat storage as the one way of utilization for high temperature solar energy was considered. The stram reforming reaction of methane was chosen for endothermic reaction. The reactor was made of stainless steel and the dimension was 6.25 mm I.D. and 30 cm long coiled tube because of the geometry requirement of solar receiver. The methane conversion was increased linearly with reaction temperature and nickel content of catalyst. The methane conversion was 60% at $600^{\circ}C$ and 90% at $900^{\circ}C$. The feasibility of steam reforming of methane as the conversion of solar energy to chemical heat storage was confirmed.

  • Ag(I) carboxylate gelators with mixed-ligands were systemically investigated to understand the mechanism of the organic gel formation. The gelators constructed 3-D networks of nanometer-sized thin fibers which facilitated gel formation in various aromatic organic solvents, even at very low concentrations. The loss of reflection peaks in the X-ray diffraction data indicated the reduction of strong interactions between the long alkyl chains as the Ag(I) carboxylates formed gels by maximizing their interactions with the organic solvents. The gelation temperature ($T_{gel}$) was measured to explore the interaction between the gelator molecules and solvents depending on their composition and concentration. Based on the gelation phenomena, a dissociation/re-association mechanism was proposed.

  • Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) exhibits potent anti-carcinogenic and other biological activities in several animal models. We report here that dietary CLA, chemically synthesized from corn oil, accumulates I silkworm, Bombyx mori, which is used as therapeutic agent for diabetes in Korea and Japan. Mulberry leaves treated with 0.1 or 10% CLA in ethanol were supplied to silkworms from the end of 3rd instar to the 3rd day of the 5th instar. Fresh mulberry leaves or leaves treated with 10% corn oil in ethanol were fed as a check treatment. the amount of total lipids in the larval body ranged from 17.4 to 19.1mg/g of body tissue, which was not significantly affected by the source of the diets. No CLA was found in the control silkworms. But the level of CLA significantly increased to 83.5 mg/g of fat, when fed with mulberry leaves treated with 10% CLA. Only trace amounts of CLA were detected in the larvae reared with check leaves and 0.1% CLA-treated leaves. Mulberry leaves treatd with corn oil or CLA were not palatable to the larvae, resulting in a reduction of larval weight. These results suggest that silkworms containing CLA in body lipids could be producted by dietary CLA.

  • 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-undecyl-2-imidazoline[I] was converted into various types of sulfonated or sulfated amphoteric surfactants as following. 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-(3-sulfonatedpropyl)-2-undecyl-2-imidazolium[III] 1-(2-sulfatedethyl)-1-methyl-2-undecyl-2-imidazolium[IV] 1-dioxylethylene methyl sulfonated-1-methyl-2-undecyl-2-imidazoliun[V] N-[N'-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-(3-sulfonatedpropylammonio]ethyl dodecanoyl amide[VI] Mono sodium N-[N'-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N'-disulfonatedpropylammonio]ethyl dodecanoyl amide[VII] N-[N'-(2-hydroxyethyl-N'-(2-hydroxypropl-N'(3-sulfonatedpropyl)ammonio] ethyl dodecanoyl amide[VIII] The alkylimidazolines could be readily hydrolyzed to give amidoamines, but by quaternerization, hydrolysis stability of imidazoline and amide type amphoteric surfactantes were increased in the alkali and acid conditions. Also, at least three carbon chains introduce to the main group, water solubility was sparingly increased.

  • Generalized van der Waals equation of state combined with the core-softening theory and temperature dependent repulsive and attractive terms exhibit the anomalous thermal expansion, i.e. density anomaly. Density maxima occur at both positive and negative pressure when the hard-core diameter decreases with increasing temperature, $db_r/dT_r<0$, and at negative pressure when the repulsive force increases with increasing temperature, $da_r/dT_r>0$.

  • Liquid crystalline polyurethanes were prepared from 1,4-bis(6-hydroxyhexoxy)benzene (BHB6) and 2,5-tolylene diisocyanate (2,5-TDI) solution polymerization in dimethylformamide produced intrinsic viscosities in the range 0.26 and $0.42d{\ell}/g$. The polyurethanes were investigated by DSC, Polarizing microscopy, X-ray, $^1H$-NMR and IR spectroscopy. Polyurethanes of two different molecular weights were studied in detail and these will be referred to as low molecular weight and high molecular weight. Polyurethane 2,5-TDI/BHB6 with $[{\eta}]=0.26d{\ell}/g$ prepared from BHB6 and 2,5-TDI, exhibited monotropic liquid crystallinity, although these polyurethanes contained no mesogenic core unit. For example, LCPU-L(low molecular weight) exhibited $T_{I-LC}$ of $122^{\circ}C$ $T_{LC-K}$ $89^{\circ}C$.
