  • The nutritional demand of oyster larva (Crassostrea gigas) were investigated to determine the optimal culture conditions and improve micro-algae utilization. Changes in nutrients and shell growth were examined in fed and 96-h (48 h in late umbone stage) oysters at four larval stages. Shell growth increased significantly in D shape larvae, regardless of feeding variations. No growth was observed in starved larvae, except in shell length of umbone (to 11.9 ${\mu}m$). Fed larvae showed significant growth in all development stages (P < 0.05). During starvation, lipids were most significantly decreased in all larval stages (by 76.8%, 68.3%, 76.3%, and 40.3%, respectively), followed by protein (41.1%, 31.1%, 33.1%, 16.7%) and nitrogen-free extracts (40.8%, 24.3%, 36.9%, 20.1%), Gross energy (kcal/g) consumption in each larval stage was 49.6%, 35.1%, 39.1%, and 20.4%, respectively. Our results indicate that lipids are the most important energy source during the early larval development stages of C. gigas.

  • The wild type and two morphological variants of Streptomyces viridochromogenes were studied for their lipidand fatty acid compositions at different incubation temperatures. It showed that a decrease in triacylglycerol content was closely linked to the aerial mycelium formation. Phospholipids showed no characteristic changes, except that the contents of phosphatidylethanolamine were clearly high for aerial mycelium deficient strain BR2 grown at $20^{\circ}C$. The strain BR2 also presented unidentified aminolipids with various $R_{f}$ values. Among the aminolipids, ornithinolipid increased gradually during the cultivation for all strains. The changes in fatty acid compositions showed a temperature dependency that the proportion of unsaturated acids decreased as the growth temperature increased. The proportion of straight chain saturated fatty acids decreased as the aerial mycelium developed, and it was most evident for the mutant strain M13 with more extensive aerial mycelium. The mutant strain BR2 presented significantly higher level of iso branched odd numbered saturated fatty acids.

  • Twenty-four cases of pituitary adenoma, 13 males and 11 females with the age ranging from 11 to 65 years, received radiation therapy(RT) on the pituitary area with 6MV linear accelerator during past 25 months at the Division of Radiation Therapy, Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital, Catholic Medical College. Of 24 cases of RT, 20 were postoperative and 4 primary. To evaluate the effect of RT, we analysed the alteration of the endocrinologic tests, neurologic abnormalities, major clinical symptoms, endocrinologic changes and improvement in visual problems after RT. The results were as follows ; 1. Major clinical symptoms were headache, visual defects, diabetes insipidus, hypogonadisms and general weakness in decreasing order of frequency. 2. All but the one with Nelson's syndrome showed abnormal neuroradiologic changes in the sella turcica with an invasive tumor mass around supra· and para-sellar area. 3. Endocrinological classifications of the patient were 11 prolactinoma, 4 growth hormone -secreting tumors, 3 ACTH-secreting tumors consisting of one Cushing's disease and two Nelson's syndrome, and 6 nonfunctioning tumors. 4. Eleven of 14 patients, visual problems were improved after treatment but remaining 3 were unchanged. 5. Seven of 11 prolactinomas returned to normal hormonal level after postoperative and primary RT and 3 patients are being treated with bromocriptine (BMCP) but one lost case. 6. Two of 4 growth hormone·secreting tumor returned to normal level after RT but the remaining 2 are being treated with BMCP, as well.

  • Growth and photosynthetic responses of one $C_3$ and two $C_4$ plants in the family Chenopodiaceae in three $CO_2$ concentration $([CO_2])$ conditions-low (about $243{\mu}mol\;mol^{-1}$, LC), present (about 378, PC), and high (about 465, HC)-were investigated in open top chambers. The relative growth rate (RGR) and net assimilation rate in the $C_3$ plant, Chenopodium album, increased with increasing $[CO_2]$, though the RGR was not enhanced significantly in the HC condition. The leaf area ratio and leaf weight ratio of the $C_3$ plant drastically decreased with increasing $[CO_2]$, suggesting that the $C_3$ plant invests more biomass to leaves in lower $[CO_2]$ conditions. The two $C_4$ plants, Atriplex glauca and A. lentiformis, showed relatively small changes in those growth parameters. These photosynthetic-pathway-dependent responses suggest that growth patterns of $C_3$ and $C_4$ plants have been altered by past increases in atmospheric $[CO_2]$ but that there will be relatively little further alteration in the future high-$CO_2$ world.

  • The fisheries industry has been changed drastically during the so - called Golden Growth Era of Korea. Recently, WTO/DDA agenda drove industries out of their safe refuges toward infinite competitions in the world. This paper aims at finding out distinguished features in the structural changes of fisheries since 70s. Furthermore, policy implications are investigated in order for the fisheries to survive in the outdoors. The paper consists of the following sections. First, we consider why and for what the structural change of fisheries in historical perspective should be investigated. And we introduce how we can approach to the goal in various aspects in the second section. In the third section, we examine the historical change of Korean fisheries in respect of national economy, resource allocation mechanism, industrial structure, and fisheries society. In the fourth section, we extract the development steps in fisheries from the periodic characteristics, using various methods of the above approaches. And we deduce the next step for Korean fisheries in the future. Finally, we conclude that there needs some turning point of fisheries policies in Korea, striving to foster the fisheries industry in the future. As results of empirical analysis in this paper, we find that fisheries industry in Korea has experienced some momentous changes during 30 years, using I/O data of B.O.K. The weight of fisheries sector in the whole economy of Korea increased during early 70s, initially leading the national economy to export - oriented engine for growth. But fisheries sector has shrunk rapidly since late 70s. Almost resources in Korea were allocated to expanding manufacturing industries. Further, fisheries industry has encountered perfect international competitions since the late 90s. This paper draws that fisheries industry in Korea will jump across to next step of qualitative growth in the future. Therefore, we recommend that the policies should be focused on enhancing the industrial competitiveness, switching quantitative growth to qualitative advance in fisheries.

  • Five microalgal species isolated from the Jeju coast and four microalgal stock strains in hatchery were cultured in order to investigate their adapation to extreme changes in environmental factors such as salinity, water temperatue, adn nutrients. In case of salinity variation, Nitzschia sp. of Bacillariophyceae, Isochrysis galbana of Haptophyceae and Tetraselmis gracilis of Prasinophyceae showed optimum growth at the low salinity of 20 and 25 psu. Amphora coffeaeformis and Chetoceros simplex of Bacillariophyceae, and Pavlova lutheri of Haptophyceae adapted well at the relatively high salinities of 30 and 35 psu. However Phaeodactylum tricornutum of Bacillariophyceae and Chlorella sp. of Chlorophyceae showed euryhaline property In case of water temperature variation, most of all the species studied wer inhibited at 10℃. C. simplex, Nitzschia sp., p. tricornutum, Chlorella sp. and T. gracilis grew well at above 20℃. A. coffeaeformis, I. galbana and P. lutheri adapted also at the high temperature of 30℃. Each microalgal strain showed different growth rates and its maximum biomass. Generally microalgal populations from the Jeju coast grow well in relatively high salinity and high water temperature. Their growth were inhibited at low water temperature, but not likely affected at low salinity. This study indicates that the microalgal populations could not be affected by abnormally low salinity phenomena, which have happened occasionally around the west Jeju coast in summer and have led macrobenthic animals to mass mortality.

  • The objectives of this study were to measure growth rate and endocrine changes and to improve milk production by somatostatin passive immunization in rat. Experimental animals were 10 weeks old 20 Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were randomly assigned each 10 in control (normal sheep serum injected: NSS) and treatment (anti-somatostatin injected), and pre-fed for 2 weeks. Anti-somatostatin was purified from serum of 1 year old sheep after somatostatin active immunization, and was injected daily to rats, and growth rate and milk yield were measured for 14 days. Growth rate of litters was 2.15 g/d and 2.32 g/d in NSS and anti-somatostatin injected, respectively. Milk production was increased 6.2% in day 8 and 6.5% in day 12 by anti-somatostatin injection. Plasma growth hormone, insulin, glucose, and urea-N were increased, but non-esterified fatty acid was decreased by anti-somatostatin injection. In summary, passive immunization of somatostatin improved growth rate of litters and milk production in rats.

  • Since the introduction of animal traction technologies(ATT) in many Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) countries, attempts to propagate its widespread use in the continent have suffered several setbacks. Many factors are responsible of this. However, developments in the African economies are believed to be a prominent factor. This study provides empirical evidence of the impact of economic growth on the performance of ATT-in Sub-Saharan Africa(SSa). The analysis uses 1971-1990 time-series data on ATT from botswana. The performance of ATT is measured on the basis of changes year covered under this study. The models used, are a regression model and a trend projection model. Although the regression model is representing a simplified view of the relationship between ATT and economic growth , it takes account of the influence of annual amounts of rainfall. It is concluded that economic growth has had a negative impact on the performance of ATT in Botwana. As the country's Gross Domestic Pro uct (GDP) steadily increased over the period of the analysis, the number of households using ATT declined at a rate of 2.5% per year. The impact of the GDP on ATT was directly associated with increases in the use of tractor, food imports and beef exports. The results have serious policy implications for agricultural development in many African countries that are not capable of sustaining their economic growth.

  • This experiment was conducted to identify the effect of several plant growth retardants on changes of endogenous free sugar and protein content in seedlings of Sedirea japonica cultured in vitro. The content of free sugar in the leaf was decreased as the treated growth retardant concentration was increased. Glucose content was higher than fructose and sucrose content in the leaf. Free sugar content of the root was increased as concentrations of growth retardants were increased. Sucrose content was higher compared with the content of fructose and glucose. The content of protein in the leaf was decreased as the growth retardants concentration was increased, but the tendency of protein content in the root was contrary to that in the leaf.

  • Since the characteristics of teachers that affect mathematics academic achievement are constantly changing and affecting mathematics achievement, longitudinal studies that can predict and analyze growth are needed. This study used data from middle and high school students from 2013(first year of middle school) to 2017(second year of high school) of the Seoul Education Longitudibal Study(SELS). By classifying the longitudinal changes in mathematics academic achievement into similar subgroups, the direct influence of teachers' characteristics(professionalism, expectations, academic feedback) perceived by students on the longitudinal changes in mathematics academic achievement was examined. As a result of the study, it was found that the characteristics of mathematics teachers(professional performance, expectation, and academic feedback) in group 1(343 students), which included the top 14.5% of students, did not directly affect longitudinal changes in mathematics academic achievement. Students in the middle 2nd group(745, 32.2%) had academic feedback from the mathematics teacher, and the 2nd group(1225 students) in the lower 53%, which included most of the students, showed that the expectations of the mathematics teacher were the longitudinal mathematics achievement. The change has been shown to have a direct effect. This suggests that support for teaching and learning should also reflect this, as the direct influence of teachers' professionalism, expectations, and academic feedback on longitudinal changes in mathematics academic achievement is different according to the characteristics and dispositions of students.
