For vessels operating in the cold climate regions, the ballast water inside or hopper tanks above the waterline may be frozen, starting at the top of the tank and at the side walls. Therefore, countermeasures against freeze-up of the ballast tank such as air-bubbling system, hot steam injecting system, heating coil system and water circulating system are taken to prevent freeze-up phenomenon; however, there are no rigorous investigations of anti-freezing to examine the effectiveness and validity of systems against freeze-up of the ballast tank, in which the temperatures are about -$25^{\circ}C$ (ambient air temperature) and $0^{\circ}C$ (sea water), respectively. In this paper, to ensure reasonable specifications for cold regions if the measures from the above-mentioned systems against freeze-up are effective, the phenomenon of ballast tank freeze-up is simulated and discussed in low temperature conditions. With the results using the commercial CFD code, CFX 14, the most cost-effective solution is conducted to prevent being frozen along the outer surface.

This paper presents a systematic procedure for three-dimensional noise analysis of an axial-flow fan by using computational aero-acoustics based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. Flow-fields of a basic fan model are simulated by solving three-dimensional, unsteady, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the commercial code ANSYS CFX 11.0. Starting with steady flow results, unsteady flow analysis is performed to extract the fluctuating pressures in the time domain at specified local points on the blade surface of the axial flow fan. The perturbed density wave by rotating blades reaches at the observer position, which is simulated by an in-house noise prediction software based on Ffowcs Williams-Hawkings equation. The detailed far-field noise signatures from the axial-flow fan are analyzed in terms of source types, field characteristics, and interpolation schemes.

The purpose of this 3-D numerical simulation is to calculate and examine a 500 kW Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) power performance and compare to calculation data(BEM method) from Delft University. The experimental approach, which has been the main method of investigation, appears to be reaching its limits, the cost increasing relate with the size of wind turbines. Hence, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques and Navier-Stokes Solvers are considered a very serious contender. We has used the CFD software package CFX-TASC flow as a modeling tool to predict the power performance of a wind turbine on the basis of its geometry and operating data. The wind turbine with 40m diameters rotor, it was scaled to compare with the calculation data from delft university. The HAWT, which has eight-rpm variations are investigated respectively. The pitch angle is $+0.5^{\circ}$ and wind speed is fixed at 5m/s. The tip speed ratio (TSR) of the HAWT ranging from 2.89 to 9.63.
The advantages of using natural circulation (NC) as a cooling system, has prompted the worldwide development to investigate this phenomenon more than before. The interesting application of the NC in low power experimental facilities and research reactors, highlights the obligation of study in these laminar flows. The inherent oscillations of NC between hot source and cold sink in low Grashof numbers necessitates stability analysis of cooling flow with experimental or numerical schemes. For this type of analysis, numerical methods could be implemented to desired mass, momentum and energy equations as an efficient instrument for predicting the behavior of the flow field. In this work, using the explicit, implicit and Crank-Nicolson methods, the fluid flow parameters in a natural circulation experimental test loop are obtained and the sensitivity of solving approaches are discussed. In this way, at first, the steady state and transient results from explicit are obtained and compared with experimental data. The implicit and crank-Nicolson scheme is investigated in next steps and in subsequent this research is focused on the numerical aspects of instability prediction for these schemes. In the following, the assessment of the flow behavior with coarse and fine mesh sizes and time-steps has been reported and the numerical schemes convergence are compared. For more detail research, the natural circulation of fluid was modeled by ANSYS-CFX software and results for the experimental loop are shown. Finally, the stability map for rectangular closed loop was obtained with employing the Nyquist criterion.
In this study, numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the current loads acting on the multi-legged underwater robot "Crabster" with a variety of incident angles using the ANSYS-CFX package. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were solved to simulate the fluid flow around Crabster to calculate the forces and moments induced by incoming currents with various angles. First, to assess the posture stability of the body, the forces and moments were calculated with various incident angles when the current acted in the vertical and horizontal directions. Next, two forms of legs (box and foil types) were evaluated to determine the hydrodynamic force variation. Finally, the current forces and moments acting on the Crabster body with the legs attached were estimated.

This research was performed to determine the oil separation characteristics of the specially designed oil filter installed in a PCV cylinder head passage. The oil filter was specially designed with fleece for separating oil mist from blow-by gas. The fleece, made of fiber fabric material, is placed in the oil filter case to absorb oil mist with a small pressure drop during blow-by gas through the filter. To do this, 3-D CFD analysis was simulated for the simplified PCV system with the oil filter using the commercial code, Ansys CFX. Results showed that the oil filter's efficiency with fleece sharply increased as oil droplet size increased.
The numerical analysis by using CFX 11.0 commercial code was done for proper design of the heat exchanger. The present experimental studies were also conducted to investigate the effects of circulating solid particles on the characteristics of fluid flow, heat transfer and cleaning effect in the fluidized bed vertical shell and tube type heat exchanger with counterflow, at which a variety of solid particles such as glass ($3mm{\Phi}$), aluminum ($2{\sim}3mm{\Phi}$), steel ($2{\sim}2.5mm{\Phi}$), copper ($2.5mm{\Phi}$) and sand ($2{\sim}4mm{\Phi}$) were used in the fluidized bed with a smooth tube. Seven different solid particles have the same volume, and the effects of various parameters such as water flow rates, particle diameter, materials and geometry were investigated. The present experimental and numerical results showed that the flow velocity range for collision of particles to the tube wall was higher with heavier density solid particles, and the increase in heat transfer was in the order of sand, copper, steel, aluminum, and glass. This behavior might be attributed to the parameters such as surface roughness or particle heat capacity.

Background and Objectives : Vowels and resonant including nasals and liquid are produced with vocal folds vibration have been used for voice therapy of hyperadduction patients. This study was conducted to investigate phonatory characteristics of vowels and resonant consonants through the EGG measures from Lx. Speech studio (Laryngograph Ltd, UK). Materials and Method : 7 male adults produced sustained vowel /a/, /i/, /u/, nasals /m/, /n/, /${\eta}$/and liquid /I/ and read the sentences (1nasals-liquid sentence, 1 non-nasals-liquid sentence) and tongue-tip trill and humming. Fx(Hz), Ox(%) were obtained of vowels, nasals, liquid and each of the posterior vowel /a/ of /ma/, /na/, /la/, /ha/ with same F0(around F#165Hz) and amplitude (75${\pm}$5db). And also DFx(Hz), DQx(%), CFx(%) and CAx(%) were obtained from reading two kinds of sentences. Results : Qx(%) was the highest in /u/ of vowels, and nasal/n/ of the resonant consonants and nasals-liquid sentence was higher Qx than non-nasals-liquid sentence but significant differences were not found. Qx(%) of the posterior vowel /a/ of nasal consonants/n/ was higher than in the isolated vowel/a/ and other posterior vowel of resonant consonants and fricatives /h/. Regularity or periodicity and higher Qx were observed in the nasals-liquid sentence than non-nasals-liquid sentence in graphs of QxFx & CFx produced by Quantiative analysis. In the nasalance score, /u/vowel was significant higher among the vowels and /I/ liquid was significant lower among the resonant consonants and nasals-liquid sentence is higher than non-nasals -liquid sentence. CQ(%) was not significantly correlated with nasalance(%). Conclusion : These findings might signify resonant phonation was not correlated with nasalance.

The heating, ventilating, air conditioning (HVAC) system is a very important part of an automotive vehicle: it controls the microclimate inside the passenger's compartment and removes the frost or mist that is produced in cold/rainy weather. In this study, the numerical analysis of the defrost duct in an HVAC system and the de-icing pattern is carried out using commercial CFX-code. The mass flow distribution and flow structure at the outlet of the defrost duct satisfied the duct design specification. For analyzing the de-icing pattern, additional grid generation of solid domain of ice and glass is pre-defined for conductive heat transfer. The flow structure near the windshield, streakline, and temperature fields clearly indicate that the de-icing capacity of the given defrost duct configuration is excellent and that it can be operated in a stable manner. In this paper, the unsteady changes in temperature, water volume fraction, and static enthalpy at four monitoring points are discussed.
A venturi scrubber is an important element of Filtered Containment Venting System (FCVS) for the removal of aerosols in contaminated air. The present work involves computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of dust particle removal efficiency of a venturi scrubber operating in self-priming mode using ANSYS CFX. Titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) particles having sizes of 1 micron have been taken as dust particles. CFD methodology to simulate the venturi scrubber has been first developed. The cascade atomization and breakup (CAB) model has been used to predict deformation of water droplets, whereas the Eulerian-Lagrangian approach has been used to handle multiphase flow involving air, dust, and water. The developed methodology has been applied to simulate venturi scrubber geometry taken from the literature. Dust particle removal efficiency has been calculated for forced feed operation of venturi scrubber and found to be in good agreement with the results available in the literature. In the second part, venturi scrubber along with a tank has been modeled in CFX, and transient simulations have been performed to study self-priming phenomenon. Self-priming has been observed by plotting the velocity vector fields of water. Suction of water in the venturi scrubber occurred due to the difference between static pressure in the venturi scrubber and the hydrostatic pressure of water inside the tank. Dust particle removal efficiency has been calculated for inlet air velocities of 1 m/s and 3 m/s. It has been observed that removal efficiency is higher in case of higher inlet air velocity.
