  • The purpose of this study is to establish the flexural strengthening method of the concrete members. To accomplish this objective, a total of seven concrete beams were tested. From this study, it is found that the initial flexural stiffness and strength of the beams reinforced with NSM CFRP strips were significantly improved compared to the beam without CFRP strip. Failure of the beam reinforced with NSM strips is initiated by failure of NSM strips, eventually sudden explosive compressive failure in the loaded region. This strengthening method combined with NSM CFRP strips and high performance mortar for concrete cover recovery is evaluated by a good strengthening method for the strength, durability and good appearance of concrete structures.

  • The main goal of this study was to examine the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP strups. Seven rectangular beams were tested. The test variables were the configuration types, spacing length of CFRP strips and the amount of reinforced stirrups bars. From this experimental study, the shear capacity of beams strengthened with CFRP increased significantly compared to the beam without CFRP strip. Maximum increase of ultimate shear strength was found about 100% more than that of the beam without a CFRP strip and the CFRP strips attached in the shear region can resist the occurrence of the initial shear cracks and the propagation of major shear cracks. In this test, most of the shear strengthened beams failed suddenly due to the debonding of CFRP strips. A calculation of the shear strength of reinforced beams strengthened with CFRP strips based on the effective stresses was conducted and the comparisons were made with the test results.

  • Tests and analyses were performed in this study to assess the shear strength of Reinforced Concrete(RC) members strengthened by the Near Surface Mounted(NSM) technique in shear, which is drawing attention as an alternative to the Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) bonding strengthening technique. Four-point bending tests were performed on 7 RC specimens without any shear reinforcement. The test variables such as the inclination of CFRP strip (45 degrees and 90 degrees), and the spacing of CFRP strip (250mm, 200mm, 150mm, 100mm) were considered. Through the testing scenarios, the effect of each test variable on the failure mode and the shear strength of the RC members strengthened by the NSM technique in shear were assessed. The test results show that the specimens with CFRP strips at 45 degrees go to failure as a result of the strip fracture, but the specimens with CFRP strips at 90 degrees go to failure as a result of the slip of strips. Strips at 45 degrees was the more effective than strips at 90 degrees, not only in terms of increasing beam shear resistance but also in assuring larger deformation capacity at beam failure. In addition, the RBSN analysis appropriately predicted the crack formation and the load-displacement response of the RC members strengthened by the NSM technique in shear.

  • RC beam of existing structures often encounter shear problems for various reasons. The shear failure of RC beam is sudden and brittle. Strengthening technique jacketing with external bonding of steel plates(or CFRP and CFS) with epoxy is many use to in practice. This study presents test results on strengthening shear deficient RC beams by external bonding of slit type steel plates. Test parameters are width, interval, length, thickness and angle of slit in steel plates. The purpose was to evaluate the reinforcing effects, failure modes and shear capacities for RC beams of strengthened with various slit type steel plates. The test result confirmed that all slit steel plates improved the stiffness and strength of the specimens significantly. Failure modes of SV series and SD series showed shear fractures and flexure fractures at ultimate state respectively. SD series were ductile rather than SV series.

  • In these days, carbon fiber-reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been widely used for retrofitting and/or strengthening structural elements. However, there are not enough test data to predict the long-term performance of the retrofitted structures exposed to freeze-thawing cycles. This paper presents the results of experimental program undertaken to investigate the effects of freeze-thawing cycling (from-18 to $4^{\circ}C) on the behavior and failure characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened in shear with CFRP sheet and plate using acoustic emission (AE) technique.

  • This is a preliminary study on the development of precast beam-column joints for dry construction methodology. Precast beam column joints with thru-connectors (BCJ_TC) using high strength bars or PS strands were developed and their seismic performance including strength degradation, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation capacity was experimentally evaluated. Test results showed that compressive failures at the end blocks of PC beam members occurred dominantly while PC columns including panel zones were free from any damage. However, the connections confined with CFRP at the end block showed much improved seismic performance than that of the unconfined connections. Connections with neoprene pad fillers between beam and column interfaces were better than the other connections in all the seismic performances except initial stiffness. To improve the seismic performances of BCJ_TC, compressive strength of the concrete at the end block need to be increased to compensate for the additional compressive stresses due to unbonded connectors and deformation of connectors should be controlled respectively.

  • The one of the commonly reported failure mode of the RC beam strengthened with FRP was caused by the separation of the concrete cover, so called delamination. Therefore, ACI440 recommended that concrete cover delamination can be prevented in strengthened beams if bond length of FRP composite be exteneded over a point of cracking moment. In this study, the failure mode and the flexural performance of RC beam with different bond length of FRP are estimated. Each bonded length is calculated based on the point of cracking moment with addition or subtraction of specific length(=150mm). The results of this study show that mid-span debonding occurs in the specimen strengthened with CFRP strips which are bonded over the point of cracking moment, while concrete cover deliamination occurs at the termination point of CFRP in the specimen with less bonded length than the point of cracking moment region.

  • This paper presents the finite element method results for HSS(Hollow Square Section) steel columns strengthened with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Plastic(CFRP) sheets. 6 specimens were fabricated and the specimen groups were non-compact short columns, slender short columns, and non-compact long columns. Test parameter was the number of CFRP ply. The finite element analysis was performed by using ANSYS Workbench V.14.0 and the results of FEM were compared with those of Test for failure mode, load-displacement curve, maximum load, and initial stiffness. The comparisons between experimental observations and computed results show that the analyses provided good correlation to actual behavior. Finally, the buckling stress were calculated according to the AISC cold-formed structure provision and the retrofitting effect were verified for each section type.

  • It has been shown that many Reinforced Concrete(RC) structures designed without seismic details have experienced brittle shear failures in the beam-column joint area and resulted in large permanent deformations and structural collapse. In this study, experimental investigations into the performance of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints strengthened with the carbon fiber-reinforced polymer(CFRP) under cyclic loading were presented. The CFRP has been applied by choosing different combinations and locations to determine the effective way to improve structural performances of joints. Eight beam-column joints were tested to investigate behaviors of each specimen under cyclic load and to compare performances of seismic retrofit. According to the experimental study, the retrofit strengthened with the CFRP provides significant improvements of flexural capacity and ductility of beam-column joints originally built without seismic details.
