In this study, a new numerical procedure for the generation of a nonlinear tailored group of waves is presented. The procedure is based on the transient wave group technique. In order to integrate the nonlinearity during the wave propagation in the computational method, the Navier-Stokes equations are applied as governing equations. The governing equations are discretized by finite volume approximation. The deformation of the free water surface in each time step is pursued with a moving grid. A two-dimensional, numerical wave tank for the simulation of the wave propagation is developed and tested in detail. The numeric results are compared first with analytical wave theories and with measurements, in order to examine the correctness of the numerical wave tank. Wave surface elevation and associated fields of velocity and pressure are numerically computed and compared with measurements. Very good agreements show up.

This work presents numerical results, using OpenFOAM, of the flow in the swirl flow generator test rig developed at Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania. The work shows results computed by solving the unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations. The unsteady method couples the rotating and stationary parts using a sliding grid interface based on a GGI formulation. Turbulence is modeled using the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model, and block structured wall function ICEM-Hexa meshes are used. The numerical results are validated against experimental LDV results, and against design velocity profiles. The investigation shows that OpenFOAM gives results that are comparable to the experimental and design profiles. The unsteady pressure fluctuations at four different positions in the draft tube is recorded. A Fourier analysis of the numerical results is compared whit that of the experimental values. The amplitude and frequency predicted by the numerical simulation are comparable to those given by the experimental results, though slightly over estimated.
For the large scale computation of turbulent flows around an arbitrarily shaped body, a parallel LES (large eddy simulation) code has been recently developed in which domain decomposition method is adopted. METIS and MPI (message Passing interface) libraries are used for domain partitioning and data communication between processors, respectively. For unsteady computation of the incompressible Wavier-Stokes equation, 4-step splitting finite element algorithm [1] is adopted and Smagorinsky or dynamic LES model can be chosen fur the modeling of small eddies in turbulent flows. For the validation and performance-estimation of the parallel code, a three-dimensional laminar flow generated by natural convection inside a cube has been solved. Then, we have solved the turbulent flow around MIRA (Motor Industry Research Association) model at $Re = 2.6\times10^6$, which is based on the model height and inlet free stream velocity, using 32 processors on IBM SMP cluster and compared with the existing experiment.

In this study, Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Model (EARSM) which is based on the existing ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ model has been applied to the flow field analysis around ship hulls. Existing transport equations for the turbulent kinetic energy and the dissipation rate are used in almost the same form and anisotropy terms of Reynolds stresses are newly considered. The well-known KVLCC2 and KCS hull forms are selected as validation cases, which were also used in 2010 Workshop on CFD in Ship Hydrodynamics. In case of KVLCC2 double model, comparison of mean velocity distribution, turbulent kinetic energy, and Reynolds stresses near the propeller plane has been carried out and wave elevation and wave profiles have been additionally studied for KCS and KVLCC2 with free surface models. Some improved results for mean velocity distribution at the propeller plane have been obtained while there is little change in free surface wave profiles.
The finite volume based multi-block RANS code, WAVIS developed at KRISO, is used to simulate the turbulent flows around a submarine with the realizable $\textsc{k}-\varepsilon$ turbulence model. RANS methods are verified and validated at the level of validation uncertainty 1.54% of the stagnation pressure coefficient for the solution of the turbulent flows around SUBOFF submarine model without appendages. Another SUBOFF configuration, axisymmetric body with four identical stem appendages, is also computed and validated with the experimental data of the nominal wake and hydrodynamic coefficients. The hydrodynamic forces and moments for SUBOFF model and a practical submarine are predicted at several drift and pitch angles. The computed results are in extremely good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, it is noteworthy that all the computations at the present study were carried out in a PC and the CPU time required for 2.8 million grids was about 20 hours to get fully converged solution. The current study shows that CFD can be a very useful and cost effective tool for the prediction of the hydrodynamic performance of a submarine in the basic design stage.
The crossflow is the key phenomenon in turbulent flow inside rod bundles. In order to establish confidence on application of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate the crossflow in rod bundles, three Reynolds-Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) models i.e. the realizable k-ε model, the k-ω SST model and the Reynolds stress model (RSM), and the Large Eddy simulations (LES) with the Wall-Adapting Local Eddy-viscosity (WALE) model are validated based on the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) flow measurement experiment in a 5 × 5 rod bundle. In order to investigate effects of periodic boundary condition in the gap, the numerical results obtained with four inner subchannels are compared with that obtained with the whole 5 × 5 rod bundle. The results show that periodic boundaries in the gaps produce strong errors far downstream of the spacer grid, and therefore the full 5 × 5 rod bundle should be simulated. Furthermore, it can be concluded, that the realizable k-ε model can only provide reasonable results very close to the spacer grid, while the other investigated models are in good agreement with the experimental data in the whole downstream flow in the rod bundle. The LES approach shows superiority to the RANS models.
Marine reactor systems experience platform movement, and therefore, the system thermal-hydraulic analysis code needs to reflect the motion effect on the fluid to evaluate reactor safety. A moving reactor model for MARS-KS was developed to simulate the hydrodynamic phenomena in the reactor under motion conditions; however, its applicability does not cover the MULTID component used in multidimensional flow analyses. In this study, a moving reactor model is implemented for the MULTID component to address the importance of multidimensional flow effects under dynamic motion. The concept of the volume connection is generalized to facilitate the handling of the junction of MULTID. Further, the accuracy in calculating the pressure head between volumes is enhanced to precisely evaluate the additional body force. Finally, the Coriolis force is modeled in the momentum equations in an acceleration form. The improvements are verified with conceptual problems; the modified model shows good agreement with the analytical solutions and the computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation results. Moreover, a simplified gravity-driven injection is simulated, and the model is validated against a ship flooding experiment. Throughout the verifications and validations, the model showed that the modification was well implemented to determine the capability of multidimensional flow analysis under ocean conditions.
In this study, we propose a fully parallelized adaptive particle refinement (APR) algorithm for smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to construct a stable and efficient multi-resolution computing system for nuclear safety analysis. The APR technique, widely employed by SPH research groups to adjust local particle resolutions, currently operates on a serialized algorithm. However, this serialized approach diminishes the computational efficiency of the system, negating the advantages of acceleration achieved through high-performance computing devices. To address this drawback, we propose a fully parallelized APR algorithm designed to enhance both efficiency and computational accuracy, facilitated by a new adaptive smoothing length model. For model validation, we simulated both hydrostatic and hydrodynamic benchmark cases in 2D and 3D environments. The results demonstrate improved computational efficiency compared to the conventional SPH method and APR with a serialized algorithm, and the model's accuracy was confirmed, revealing favorable outcomes near the resolution interface. Through the analysis of jet breakup, we verified the performance and accuracy of the model, emphasizing its applicability in practical nuclear safety analysis.

The influence of leodo Ocean Research Station structure to surrounding atmospheric flow is carefully investigated using CFD techniques. Moreover, the validation works of computational results are performed by the comparison with the observed data of leodo Ocean Research station. In this paper, we performed 3-dimensional CAD modelling of the station, generated the grid system for numerical analysis and carried out flow analyses using Navier-Stokes equations coupled with two-equation turbulence model. For suitable free stream conditions of wind speed and direction, the interference of the research station structure on the flow field is predicted. Beside, the computational results are benchmarked by observed data to confirm the accuracy of measured date and reliable data range of each measuring position according to the wind direction. Through the results of this research, now the quantitative evaluation of the error range of interfered gauge data is possible, which is expected to be applied to provide base data of accurate sea surface wind around research stations.

Turbulent flow analysis around a wind turbine blade was performed to evaluate the power performance of offshore wind turbine. Fluent package was utilized to solve the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations in non-inertial rotating coordinates. The realizable k-$\varepsilon$ model was used for turbulence closure and the grid system combining structured and unstructured grids was generated. In the first, lift and drag forces of 2-D foil section were calculated and compared with existing experimental data for the validation. Then torque and thrust of the wind turbine blade having NACA 4-series sections were calculated with fixed pitch angle and rpm. Tip speed ratio was varied by changing wind speed. In the next, three kinds of end plate were attached at the tip of blade in order to increase the power of the wind turbine. Among them the end plate attached at the suction side of the blade was found to be most effective. Furthermore, performance analysis with tilt angle and rake was also performed.
