  • Thermal flows inside a laser printer are affected by generated heat from a fuser and boards. Thus, the effect of fans has been investigated to control the thermal flows and behaviors of toners. In order to analyze the phenomena experimentally, a PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) has been used, and then the flow inside the printer has been predicted by the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) in this study to determine the efficient flow distribution by an optimum design of the printer. The determined optimum design has been confirmed by the developed PIV technique so that the efficiency of the laser printer can be improved by the proposed design.

  • Mean concentrations of ammonia gas released as a tracer from an isolated low-rise building have been measured and predicted. Predictions were calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and two dispersion models: a diffusion model and a Lagrangian particle tracking technique. Explicit account was taken of the natural variation of wind direction by a technique based on the weighted summation of individual steady state wind direction results according to the probability density function of the wind direction. The results indicated that at distances >3 building heights downstream the weighted predictions from either model are satisfactory but that in the near wake the diffusion model is less successful. Weighted solutions give significantly improved predictions over unweighted results. Lack of plume spread is identified as the main cause of inaccuracies in predictions and this is linked to inadequate resolution of flow features and mixing in the CFD model. Further work on non-steady state simulation of wake flows for dispersion studies is recommended.

  • This paper presents the numerical estimation results of oil outflows from damaged single-hull and double-hull ships by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. A CFD method for multi-phase flow analysis was used, and the effects of numerical parameters on oil flows was investigated. Numerical simulations were conducted to predict the changes in oil outflows under various damage conditions owing to grounding or collision accidents and verified through available experimental results. The present numerical results showed a good agreement with the experimental results according to the geometrical characteristics of single and double hulls. In particular, the oil outflows from double hulls accompanying complex interactions between water and oil were reasonably predicted a shown in the experiment. This study established a reliable CFD technique necessary for estimating the oil outflows of damaged ships.

  • The aim of this study is to research applicable possibility or Dry Sorbent Injection Technique(DSI) in sox removal process using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) software package. It will be applied for 500MW in capacity coal-fired thermal power plant operated by South Korea N. Power Co., Ltd. The DSI process is adapted between a preheater and an EP process in the technological assembly. The numerical analysis performs in predicting and optimizing of DSI process's characteristics, which consists of structure of duct, position of injection nozzles, injection speed, and dispersion of sorbent. Computing results are shown that degree of sorbent dispersion depends on structure of duct and position of injection nozzles strongly. The highest dispersion efficiency was obtained when we set a Lobed-plate inside the duct and 6 injection nozzles on the duct(4 injection nozzles at the corners and 2 injection nozzles on upper and under walls as a rectangle duct shape). We also know that change of injection speed of sorbent doesn't have an large effect on the sorbent dispersion but it can effect to drop pressure.

  • This study was conducted to qualify the equality of the flow distribution from open channel between rapid mixing basin and flocculation basins in a domestic S_ water treatment plant, and to suggest a remedy for improving the equality. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the suggested remedy, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technique are used, and for verifying the CFD simulation results tracer tests were carried out. From the results of CFD simulation and tracer tests, it was investigated that the modification of hydraulic structure in the distribution channel, which is to install the longitudinal orifice baffle in flow direction, could improve the equality of the flow distribution over 75%.

  • Increasing interest in indoor air quality (IAQ) control has been found because of its serious effect on human health. To evaluate IAQ, thermal comfort in terms of temperature and velocity distributions of indoor air has to be analyzed in detail. Choice of location for installation of air-conditioner in a building will affect the performance of cooling effect and thermal comfort on the occupants, which in turn will affect the indoor air quality (IAQ) of the building. In this paper, we present a discussion on the proper location of the air-conditioner in order to obtain good thermal comfort for occupant of a typical bedroom in Macao. A set of carefully designed numerical experiments is run with the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLOVENT 3.2 [1]. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with finite volume technique and turbulence effects upon the mean flow characteristics is modeled with the k - & model. Assumption of steady state environment is made and only convective and conductive heat transfer from the occupant and air-conditioner are being concerned.

  • Glass particle distribution in a stirred solid/liquid systems was investigated using computational fluid dynamics(CFD). The numerical results were compared to experimental data from the available literature which investigated the local dispersed phase volume fraction by means of an endoscope technique. Eulerian multi-phase model and applications considered high loading of solid particle was used to investigate the influence of the particle concentration and mixing tank size on the solid distribution. A good agreement was obtained between the experimental data and simulation results. The results showed different solid particle distribution in an agitator by particle concentration and mixer size.

  • Unlike ordinary train, the HST(High Speed Train) is operated at a very high speed, which may cause pressure transient problems when the HST is passing through a station. In the present study, the wind pressure caused by the passing HST was measured in the Cheonan HST station and compared with the numerical simulations. For the measurement, the HST was passing through the station at speeds of 240 km/h north bound and 150 km/h south bound. MEMS based differential pressure transducers are used to measure pressure variation at various locations in the station. It is shown from the results that measured data are in good agreement with CFD simulation with moving mesh technique for the train movement. With the present validation of CFD simulation, the CFD simulation may effectively aid the design of future HST station.

  • Abstract should be in English. The leaning angle optimization of turbine blade using the genetic algorithm was conducted in this paper. The calculation CFD technique was based upon the Diagonalized Alternating Directional Implicit scheme(DADI) with algebraic turbulencemodeling. The leaning angle of VKI turbine blade was represented using B-spline curve. The control points are the design variable. Genetic algorithm was taken into account as an optimization tool. The objective was to minimize the total pressure loss. The optimized final geometry shows the better aerodynamic performance compared with the initial turbine blade.

  • In the present study, one of the widely applied equations for gas-solid cyclones, Leith and Licht model, was evaluated based on the 3-D CFD technique. The initial and boundary values of radial position and tangential velocity obtain-ed from the CFD simulation enabled complete calculation of the nonlinear second differential equation. This approach showed about 30% errors between calculations with and without the second order differential term. The calculation by using the simple first order equation presented shorter times to migrate up to the inner wall of the cyclone than by the second order, which theoretically implies higher separation efficiency. Further comparison is now under evaluation in terms of the detailed grade efficiency.
