CFD를 이용한 벌크화물선의 선형개발 (Hull Form Development of a Bulk Carrier using CFD)

  • CFD tools were intensively used to develop a bulk carrier hull form of 180,000 DWT. HCAD and WAVIS were utilized to vary and evaluate the hull forms. LCB and framelines were systematically changed starting from a mothership. Resistance characteristics have been assessed by evaluating the wave-pattern resistance and viscous pressure drag along with the wave profile and wake distribution. It was found that the hull forms obtained from LCB variations were not good enough to satisfy the target resistance coefficient because of large wave generation at the design speed. After choosing the appropriate one from the LCB variation series, bow and stern framelines have been modified to improve wave-making characteristics and wake distribution, respectively. Model tests were performed to confirm the CFD results. Furthermore, the effect of free surface on CFD application was investigated, and a few comments are given on the difference between WAVIS version 1.4 and 2.0.

  • In recent years cluster systems using off-the-shelf processors and networks components have been increasing popular. Since actual performance of a cluster system varies significantly for different architectures, representative in-house codes from major application fields were executed to evaluate the actual performance of systems with different combination of CPU, network, and network topology. As an example of practical CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, the flow past an Onera-M6 wing and the flow past an infinite wing were simulated on clusters of Linux and several other hardware environments.

  • Several high resolution schemes such as OSHER, MUSCL, SMART, GAMMA, WACEB and CUBISTA are comparatively studied with respect to the accurate capturing of fluid interfaces throughout the application to two typical test cases of a translation test and a collapsing water column problem with a return wave. It is accomplished by implementing the high resolution schemes in the in-house CFD code(PowerCFD) for computing 3-D flow with an unstructured cell-centered method and an interface capturing method, which is based on the finite-volume technique and fully conservative. The calculated results show that SMART scheme gives the best performance with respect to accuracy and robustness.

  • Numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the characteristics of the mist flow through the fire suppression nozzles. The commercial CFD software, FLUENT with the proper modeling was applied for analyzing both the internal and external flow of the spray nozzles. Computations were made for the full cone nozzle in the operation range of the low pressure and high flow-rate. To validate the present computational procedure, numerical results are compared with measurements in terms of K-factor, SMD, axial spray velocity and spray angles. Numerical results suggested that the present numerical model can be used as an adequate tool for a design purpose of mist-spray nozzles.

  • In the present paper, Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) uncertainty analysis proposed by ITTC was investigated and applied to ship resistance performance using open source libraries, called OpenFOAM. Uncertainties for grid size, time step and iteration number were studied. Wave patterns and hull wave profile were compared for various uncertainty parameters. From results, grid size uncertainty was mainly contributed to simulation numerical uncertainty.

CFD Application for Prediction of Ship Added Resistance in Waves

  • This paper deals with the added resistance of a ship in waves using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The ship added resistance is one of the key considerations in the design of energy-efficient ship. In this study, the added resistance of a LNG carrier in head waves is computed using a CFD code to consider the nonlinearity and the viscous effects. The unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equation (RANS) is numerically solved and the volume of fluid (VOF) approach is used to simulate the free surface flows. The length of incident wave varies from half the ship length to twice the ship length. To investigate the nonlinearity effect, both the linear wave condition and the nonlinear wave condition are considered. The heave and pitch motions are calculated along with the added resistance, and the wave contours are obtained. Grid convergence test is conducted thoroughly to achieve the converged motion and resistance values. The calculated results are compared and validated with experimental data.

  • A two-phase numerical model for plate-fin heat exchangers with plain fins and wave fins is studied incorporating the thermodynamic properties and the characteristics of fluid flow. The numerical simulations for the two fins in cryogenic conditions are earned out by employing a homogenous two-phase flow model with the CFD code ANSYS CFX. The heat transfer coefficients and the friction factor for nitrogen saturated vapor condensation process inside two types of plate fin heat exchanger are evaluated including the effects of saturation temperature (pressure), mass flow rate and inlet vapor quantity. The convective heat transfer coefficients and friction factors will be used for design of plate-fin type heat exchangers operating under cryogenic conditions.

  • With the recent increasing demand on the high-performance buildings, there has been a rapid growth in the application of the Computational Fluid Dynamics to the Building design. The conceptual ventilation design of the underground parking area currently under construction is validated using the CFD-ACE+. It has been found that the conceptual ventilation design quantitively satisfies the legal standards. However, the highly concentrated region of CO is predicted. The positions and blowing directions of ventilating lane are changed based on the previously predicted concentration distributions. The highly concentrated region of CO is slightly reduced, but not much change has been observed. Two more fang are installed and the positions and blowing directions of the fans are modified so that the highly concentrated region of CO is minimized.

  • In the present study, numerical simulation has been performed to investigate the characteristics of the mist flow through the fire suppression nozzles.   • The comming of high speed computers with large memory size in recent years has allowed the practical development of codes which solve the Reynolds-averaged NAvier-Stokes (RANS) equations in three dimensions. Such codes are already used by the large engine manufacturers for the advanced design of some engine components. Different computational fluid dynamics approaches and turbulence models exist, and it seems essential today to establish their degree of validity for application to typical configurations in turbomachinery. In 1993 the Turbomachinery Committee of the IGTI of ASME has issued an open invitation to predict the flow details of an isolated transonic fan rotor called as NASA ROTOR 37. This paper reports this test case.
