It is easier to view flow visualization by using a water tunnel rather than a smoke wind tunnel because of low speed at same Reynolds number. Using a water tunnel also produces more definite flow visualization by the use of various color dyes. The flow uniformity in test section is very significant for accuracy of the test because most flow experiments elicit results through the installation of a model in uniform flow. The purpose of small-size desktop-type water tunnel is not to produce quantitative measurements, but rather to give a visualization of the fluid flow phenomenon. However, uniformity in the test section affects the accuracy of the results. Accordingly, this research estimates uniformity in a water tunnel test section by using the commercially available CFD code FLUENT. Results of the CFD analysis show that the flow uniformity of the test section is good.

This paper is on the study of flow force compensating method of spool type valve. A simple flow force compensating method using stepped spool is presented in this paper. It is easy to manufacture stepped spool in the presented method because the shape of it is simple. The method has the merit that the size of valve need not be increased. Actuating force required for driving means of spool can be decreased by the compensation of flow force. The effect of presented method is predicted through CFD analysis. The prototypes of flow force compensating Direct Drive Servo-Valve where the result of CFD analysis is reflected are manufactured, and the measurement of flow force is carried out. It is known from the measurement that the effect of flow force compensation is very similar to from CFD analysis.

Cavitation refers to a phenomenon in which empty spaces occur in a fluid due to changes in pressure and a velocity. When a liquid moves at a high speed, the pressure drops below the vapor pressure, and vapor bubbles are generated in the liquid. This study used CFD to analyze the flow of fluid machinery used in marine and offshore plants. The goals are to ensure the validity of the analysis method for marine propellers in an open water test, to increase the forward ratio, and to use FLUENT to understand the flow pattern due to cavitation. A three-dimensional analysis was performed and compared with experimental data from MOERI. The efficiency was highest at advance ratios of 0.7 - 0.8. Thrust was generated due to the difference between the pressure surface and the suction surface, and it was estimated that bubbles would be generated in the vicinity of the back side surface rather than the face side of the propeller, resulting in more cavitation. The cavitation decreased sharply as the advance ratio increased. The thrust and torque coefficients were comparable to those of the MOERI experimental data except at the advance ratio of 1, which showed a difference of less than 5%. Therefore, it was confirmed that CFD can evaluate an open water propeller test.
This study is to investigate the air flow around a sirocco fan which is used in a range hood. The main object of the study is to improve the flow rate of the fan by analysis of unsteady 3-dimensional incompressible flow. Overall analysis is carried out using CFD method. For this, we used a commercial code, SC/Tetra, and used a sliding mesh method to give the same condition as an actual state. First, verification of the CFD results is done by comparing the experimental data with the numerical data for the suction flow rate. It is confirmed that two results are well consistent. Then for the improvent of flow rate, the effect of shape factors such as diameter ratio of fan, geometry of case, cut-off aperture and guide angle of case exit on the suction flow rate was considered. Especially, for a new design of housing, the principle of Archimedes spiral was used. The overall analysis was applied to a new design of housing, and the result showed an increase of flow rate by 10.7%.
A sirocco fan is widely used for discharging pollutants of a kitchen space since it is able to generate a relatively high air flow rate considering its small size and makes less noise than a axial fan or a centrifugal fan. However, it has a problem because its efficiency is low, and power consumption is larger. Performance of a sirocco fan is influenced by various factors such as number of the fan blades, diameter of the fan, geometry of the fan, geometry of its housing, revolution frequency, static pressure condition, and etc. This research investigated the effect on the performance of geometry of the housing. For CFD analysis, we used a commercial code, SC/Tetra, and used a sliding mesh method to give the same condition as an actual state. Verification of the CFD results is done by comparison of experimental data and numerical one about the suction flow rate, and it is confirmed that two results are well consistent. After we changed the shape of housing according to Archimedes' screw, we observed that suction efficiency is improved by 10.7% maximum.

Recent developments in the prediction of the contribution of windnoise to the interior SPL have opened a realm of new possibilities in terms of i) how the convective and acoustic sources terms can be identified, ii) how the interaction between the source terms and the side glass can be described and finally iii) how the transfer path from the sources to the interior of the vehicle can be modelled. This work discusses several simulation methods that can be used to represent the physical phenomena involved such as CFD, FEM, BEM, FE/SEA Coupled and SEA. This work focuses on the validation of the wind noise source characterization method and the vibro-acoustic models on which the wind noise sources are applied in the framework of a benchmark proposed by Hyundai Motors Corporation.
This study is to develop a 1kW-class small wind turbine blade which will be applicable to relatively low speed regions. For this blade, a high efficiency wind turbine blade is designed and a light and low cost composite structure blade is adopted considering fatigue life. In this study, shape design of 1kW-class small wind turbine blade for hybrid power generation system is carried out by BEMT(blade element momentum theory). X-FOIL open software was used to acquire lift and drag coefficients of the 2D airfoils used in power prediction procedure. Moreover, pressure and velocity distributions are investigated according to TSR by CFD analysis.

Before we develop LVAFoam, a CFD software for launch vehicle analysis, we conducted a survey on other CFD softwares. We looked at in-house code and commercial CFD software of other countries that were used as a simulation of launch vehicle's combustor, turbopump and external flow. This research included in-house code solvers, developed by NASA, Mississippi State University, DLR, Bertin Technologies, CNES, CERFACS, and JAXA as well as commercial CFD software from FLUENT, CFX, Advance/FrontFlow/red, GASP, CRUNCH CFD, CFD-ACE+, FINETM/Turbo, STAR-CCM+. The simulation cases of launch vehicle analysis from each commercial softwares and introduction of the LVAFoam were presented.
